.SYNOPSIS...A pair of winter storms will impact the area Sunday
and then Monday afternoon into Tuesday with valley rain and
mountain snow. The strongest and coldest storm is expected to
start Monday afternoon with snow levels possibly reaching desert
floors including the Tucson Metro Monday night into Tuesday.
Significant snow accumulations are expected for elevations
generally above 4000 feet. Gusty winds with well below average
temperatures will also accompany the storm system.

.DISCUSSION...It is going to be quite interesting over the next 72
hours across all of Arizona as a significant winter storm impacts
the state of Arizona.

The first storm system is currently sliding down the Cali
coastline. This is resulting in an increase of gusty southwest
winds. Expect winds to slacken after sunset, but a potent trof and
associated cold front will be moving across Arizona. Valley rain
showers and mountain snow showers will be on the increase from
late this evening across western Pima Co to the rest of the area
by Sunday morning. Precip will be showery in nature, with perhaps
a 1-3 hour block of continuous light to moderate rain along the
frontal bndry. Valley rain amounts will generally be 0.05 to
0.35" with 3-7" of snow between 6000-7000 feet and up to 12"
above 7000 feet. Snow levels could briefly dip to 4500 feet or so
Sunday afternoon and night south and east of Tucson. Accumulations
of up to 1" are possible with minimal impacts to roadways.

There will be a quick break between storm one and storm two. Storm
two will be a much stronger, wetter, and colder storm system.
Because of storm one lowering snow levels, storm two will have
an antecedently cold airmass to start with. Thus, snow levels
start around 5000 feet Monday afternoon and quickly fall to
around 4000 feet by early Monday evening. This is where things get
interesting. We have a plethora of ensemble based, probability,
and statistical guidance. There is an increasingly strong signal
in the guidance for snow levels falling easily to 3000 feet late
Monday evening/night, potentially dropping to around 2500 feet
early Tuesday morning. This would push at least a rain/snow mix
into Tucson with potentially higher portions of the metro seeing a
changeover to all snow with light (Dusting to 1-2") of snow. At
this time, there is a low (20-30%) chance of this occurring. There
is higher confidence of seeing snow, but lower confidence of
actual accumulations. There is still plenty of time to see how
this evolves, but a Winter Weather ADV down to roughly 3000 feet
is possible. Best spots to see snow would be far east Tucson,
Catalina Foothills, Vail, Corona De Tucson etc. This will be
monitored closely over the next day or so to see if snow levels
need to go lower and/or probabilities of accumulating snow higher.

Now for the rest of the area, this is lining up to be a
significant winter storm for elevations around 4000 feet and
above. This is especially true for areas from Nogales to Sonoita
to Sierra Vista, where guidance is suggesting a frontal bndry from
storm two stalling or slowing and becoming an east/west bndry
Tuesday morning and into early afternoon. This could push
snowfall totals into the 3-8" range with locally 12" for valleys
near 5000 feet. Something to watch for sure, as this band could
shift north or south changing snowfall amounts. There is at least
moderate confidence, thus the issuance of a Winter Storm Watch for
the area. Mountain locations above 7000 feet could see 10-16" of
snow. Some higher amounts are possible for peaks.

As the storm pushes out of the area late Tuesday, the coldest air
of the season is likely. A Hard Freeze is possible for Tucson
with lows possibly into the middle to upper 20s. For areas south
and east of Tucson overnight lows will be widespread teens/twenties.
Localized areas dipping into the single digits is possible as
well. One thing to watch will be how much snow accumulates and how
quick we clear/dry Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. If we
can maximize the radiational cooling with snowcover, some very
cold overnight lows will be possible.Something to keep in the back
of your mind as we progress into the work week.

After that, a slight warming trend for a few days with yet another
storm system possibly by later next week. With the ongoing
drought, keep'em coming.

.AVIATION...Valid through 25/00Z.
SCT-BKN clouds at 7k-11k ft MSL and periods of high clouds AOA 15k
ft MSL thru 24/04Z, then lowering cloud decks thru the remainder of
the forecast period. BKN-OVC cloud decks at 2k-5k ft AGL by 24/12Z.
VCSH or SHRA is likely at all TAF locales aft 24/08Z. SFC wind
generally SWLY at 10-16 kts, gusts to 26 kts through 24/03Z then
becoming Sly to 10 kts.  Wind increasing again aft 24/16Z becoming
SW 10-16 kts with gusts up to 30 kt. Aviation discussion not updated

.FIRE WEATHER...A series of cold storm systems will move across
the region into the middle of next week, for an increasing chance of
precipitation.  Expect valley showers and mountain snow showers down
to around 5000 ft through Sunday.  Another even colder storm system
will bring additional precipitation, likely heavier with snow levels
around 4500 ft Monday dropping to or below 3000 ft by Tuesday
morning. Gusty winds are expected during this unsettled weather
period, with Monday looking like the breeziest day. A drier weather
pattern is expected during the second half of next week with the
possibility of yet another storm system next weekend.
