Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Tulsa OK 304 AM CDT Sun May 9 2021 .DISCUSSION... A few elevated storms are tracking quickly northeast across the region early this morning with one severe hail report in Benton county AR. Isolated severe hail/wind remains possible over the next couple of hours as these storms progress across far eastern OK and northwest AR. A cold front is marching quickly south and east across OK and stretches from near I35 in north central OK to Altus in SW OK. A large MCS across KS and MO should largely stay to the north and east of the forecast area. A few storms could develop along the front close to the KS border and could at least briefly become severe. Otherwise the cold front will continue to sweep southeast thru the morning across eastern OK and northwest AR. Showers and storms should begin to develop along the front between 12Z and 15Z from far NW AR down to near MLC in SE OK and then progress southeast from there. The last several runs of the HRRR are not too aggressive with this activity despite sufficient instability and shear, likely due to unfavorable morning timing and capping issues with warm mid levels still in place. Convection should be much more aggressive by the time the front progresses into the ArkLaTex this afternoon when daytime heating can erode capping. Several days of below average cool weather will follow this front. An approaching wave and the resulting warm advection north of the front over TX will result in scattered showers and some storms Monday and Tuesday. Models have shifted the heavier QPF axis south of the Red River compared to a couple nights ago, and thus the heavy rain/flood threat risk has decreased. Rain chances will end Wednesday and Thursday looks dry as well. A weak boundary will push into the region in a NW flow pattern aloft, starting another period of unsettled weather for the region. ONSET...Ongoing. DISCUSSION... Thunderstorms will increase in coverage across central and eastern Kansas during the evening and likely expand into a large thunderstorm complex. This storm complex will spread east and southeast overnight while a cold front pushes southeastward. The western edge of the storm complex along with the approaching cold front will both provide a chance of storms across northeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas late tonight. Strong low level winds and sufficient instability will support the potential for a few strong to severe storms. Additionally, winds will remain gusty through the overnight hours. A corridor of strong winds just above the surface may also prompt periodic gusts around 40 mph across the higher terrain of southeast Oklahoma and northwest Arkansas. SPOTTER AND EMERGENCY MANAGEMENT ACTION STATEMENT... Local Spotter Activation May Be Needed. .DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday. SUNDAY...Thunderstorm Potential...High Wind Potential. Thunderstorm chances will continue during the day Sunday along and ahead of a passing cold front. Higher chances will focus southward through the day with rain chances likely ending across far southeast Oklahoma by early Sunday evening. A few strong to severe storms may develop, however it currently appears the greater coverage of any severe weather will focus further south across Texas and Arkansas.
