...WINTER STORM WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT FROM 3 AM TO 6 PM CST
MONDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy snow, possibly mixed with freezing rain. Total 
  snow accumulations of 8 to 12 inches and ice accumulations of a 
  light glaze.

* WHERE...Portions of north central and northeast Kansas.

* WHEN...Freezing rain may occur very early Monday morning before
  transitioning to all snow before sunrise. The heaviest snow is
  expected to occur between 8 am and 3 pm, tapering off Monday 
  evening.

* IMPACTS...Travel may become nearly impossible Monday morning, 
  and may still be difficult Tuesday morning. 

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...The snow may fall at a very high rate with
  amounts over 1 inch per hour, making it very difficult to keep
  roads clear. Winds will initially be from the northeast and
  slowly shift to the north through the day with speeds of 15 to
  20 mph gusting up to 30 mph. This could lead to some blowing
  snow as well. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Any travel on Monday is strongly discouraged. If you leave the 
safety of being indoors, you are putting your life at risk.

* WHAT...Mixed precipitation expected. Total snow accumulations of
  1 to 6 inches and ice accumulations of a light glaze.

* WHERE...Riley, Pottawatomie, Jackson, Dickinson and Geary 
  Counties.

* WHEN...From 3 AM to 6 PM CST Monday.

* IMPACTS...Travel could be very difficult. The hazardous 
  conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...There will be a sharp cutoff in snowfall
  amounts on the southeastern side of this snow band with northern
  and western parts of the counties likely to see the higher snow
  amounts. Northeast to north winds gusting up to 30 mph could
  also cause some blowing snow. 

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Conditions can deteriorate rapidly in winter weather situations,
slow down and allow extra time when traveling. practice your
winter safety rules, keep an extra flashlight, food, and water in
your car in case of an emergency.

* WHERE...Jefferson, Morris, Wabaunsee and Shawnee Counties.

* WHEN...The wintry precipitation will begin early Monday 
  morning and persist through the day, ending Monday evening.

* IMPACTS...Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous 
  conditions could impact the morning or evening commute.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...There is forecast to be a very sharp cutoff
  between the wintry mixture and pure rain, with the very real
  possibility that little to no impacts occur in the parts of
  these counties.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A light wintry mix is possible in north-central Kansas today and
tonight, but the potential for significant snowfall on Monday is
hogging the spotlight of the upcoming forecast.

Longwave troughing is becoming more established over the western
CONUS with the first in a trio of shortwaves noted in water vapor
imagery ejecting through the Great Basin. This PV lobe lifts
through the mean low-amplitude ridging currently in place in over
the south-central CONUS, generating respectable kinematic lift
over the region today. At the surface, a 1028-mb high pressure
cell is centered over the Upper Mississippi River Valley and
progged to slide into the southern Great Lakes region this
afternoon ahead of the advancing wave. Baroclinicity is already
increasing along the Front Range this morning and will result in
the formation of a lee cyclone by this afternoon that moves
through southern Kansas tonight. H850 winds have been steadily
veering to the south over the course of the night, heralding the
onset of increasing isentropic ascent and theta-e advection in
the warm sector ahead of the developing cyclone.

Low stratus/higher theta-e air over Oklahoma is progged to spread
northward on this southerly flow this morning. The coupling of the
280-300 K isentropic ascent through this saturated layer and
increasing kinematic support ahead of the PV lobe should fuel the
development of precipitation by midday in north-central Kansas. With
the bulk of the moisture column less than 2-km thick, hedged
towards drizzle or light snow as the predominant precipitation
type, though some RAP profiles have deep enough saturation and
lower static stability to support the development of showers, at
least early on.

The main question revolves around the potential for freezing
drizzle with this first wave of precipitation this afternoon and
this evening, mainly along and west of a Minneapolis to Washington
line. Temperatures this morning fell into the upper teens in
central Kansas while dewpoints lingered in the lower teens on a
dry east wind. There is concern that temperatures may not rise as
fast as progged by the NBM, and a possibly fall closer to the wet
bulb at the onset of any precipitation this afternoon. With
dewpoints only expected to rise into the mid-20s this afternoon,
hedged temperatures downward to around the freezing mark in
central and north-central Kansas. This would support more of a
freezing drizzle setup, and have gone ahead with a small winter
weather advisory to cover this threat through 06Z. Daytime solar
insolation may limit the impacts of any freezing drizzle, but
travel impacts may become more notable after sunset.

The surface low passes south of the area tonight, with the threat
for light drizzle continuing along and ahead of the attendant
surface front, ending from northwest to southeast by late in the
morning on Sunday. Low clouds and a steady northeast wind will still
make for a rather raw day.

The second and likely most potent upper level shortwave begins
ejecting towards the Southern High Plains late Sunday. A stronger
cyclone develops over western Texas by 00Z Monday and lifts into the
Ozarks during the day on Monday. There remains modest intra- and
inter-model variability in the track of this second cyclone, likely
stemming from uncertainty in the exact placement of the downstream
surface baroclinic zone--the remnants of the first lee cyclone that
is responsible for our weekend weather. A cyclone track through
southeastern Kansas looks to be increasing likely, which would place
the forecast area in the cross hairs for a potential heavy snow
event within the deformation zone northwest of this low.

Recent model trends have slowed the progression of the wave and now
are allowing deeper Gulf moisture to work around the cyclone--which
is reflected in the much higher QPF values with this recent forecast
update. The main question revolves around the thermal profiles of
the cyclone and the position of the dry slot in the afternoon. There
is increasing confidence of a heavy band of snow developing within a
region of strong but narrow H800-600 frontogenesis just poleward of
the lower tropospheric warm nose--with a 4-6 hour window in which
snowfall may rapidly accumulate. There will likely be a very sharp
cutoff in these snow values as one travels to the southeast. Current
forecast snow amounts have been raised to the 6-10 inch range north
of a line from Abeline to Holton, with amounts quickly dropping to
near zero southeast of the Turnpike. A wintry mix is also possible
in this transition zone near where the dry slot and warm nose could
force the p-type to more of a freezing drizzle. If current trends
continue, there is a strong possibility that a winter storm watch
will be issued later today.

The period of heaviest snow will be Monday afternoon, with a
tapering off of the snow by the evening hours. There is uncertainty
in whether light snow may linger on the backside of the system
overnight Monday into Tuesday, which may bleed over into the arrival
of our third system for Tuesday afternoon into Wednesday. Once
again, accumulating winter precipitation is likely with this third
wave, the details of which will be hashed out in later updates. The
end of the week looks to feature a warm up, the degree of which will
be dictated by the amount of snow on the ground from our previous
storms.

Marginal VFR to VFR for the afternoon from west to east.
Conditions gradually deteriorate into the overnight period. Looks
like any actual -FZDZ will remain north of the terminals with
the most likely precipitation to impact the terminals being in the
form of -SHRA. Have worked this in through the area from west to
east along with lower CIG/VIS into the Sunday morning hours. It is
possible that LIFR or a period of VLIFR could move across the
terminals within an inverted trough zone with winds calming and
then backing to the NNE and eventually to the NNW by the very end
of the period.

This hazardous weather outlook is for east central...north
central and northeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Today and Tonight.

A light mixture of freezing drizzle and snow is possible in
north-central Kansas this afternoon, spreading along the Nebraska
border tonight. Travel impacts are possible and a winter weather
advisory has been issued for portions of this area for this
afternoon and tonight.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Sunday through Friday.

A potential winter storm will move through during the day on
Monday, with precipitation initially starting out as a wintry mix
and then transitioning to mostly snow. Moderate to even heavy snow
is possible during the day on Monday, with the best threat for
heavy snow along and north of a Abilene to Holton line. A wintry
mix may fall along and south of this line.

A third storm system looks to move through Tuesday into Wednesday,
but it is too early to determine the winter weather impacts from
this system.
