Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Topeka KS 1212 PM CDT Mon Aug 23 2021 ...Update to aviation forecast discussion... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 344 AM CDT Mon Aug 23 2021 A warm night across the area, with temperatures still in the mid to upper 70s as of 3 AM. Across north-central Kansas, a few storms have made it into Republic County and the vicinity, but have quickly weakened as they moved into stronger capping. Showers and weak storms in this area should continue for a few more hours before finally dissipating. The shortwave trough over the Dakotas that helped develop these storms will keep moving off to the northeast, allowing upper ridging over the Southern Plains to expand northward. A steady south wind will help the boundary layer mix deeper than yesterday, so expecting higher temperatures but lower dewpoints. There is some uncertainty as to just how low dewpoints can mix out to, but they should be a bit lower by afternoon compared to the low/mid 70s they are now. Despite some lingering uncertainty in the dewpoints, heat indices of around 105 are likely across much of the area. Have even expanded the heat advisory a bit farther west along I-70 corridor. The synoptic pattern over the region will change little over the next week. The upper ridge to the south will continue to gradually expand northward, while any weak disturbances in the flow stay well to the north. Southerly flow will continue at the surface, to the south of a quasi-stationary boundary across Nebraska. As such, warm temperatures will continue at least into the weekend. Tuesday and perhaps Wednesday/Thursday will see temperatures approach triple digits towards central Kansas. Here, deeper mixing is likely closer to the 850 mb thermal ridge axis. Even farther east, most locations should be in the mid to upper 90s again. Dewpoints will have the opposite pattern - higher in the east and lower in the west. This should result in heat indices in the 100-105 degree range each day. Still will wait to get a bead on how the boundary layer behaves today before issuing for future days, but additional heat products will likely be needed for later this week. Turning towards precipitation, only small chances for showers and storms will be present through the end of the work week. These chances will be dependent on evening convection developing along the quasi-stationary boundary in Nebraska and moving southeastward into the area overnights. Similar to last night, the more organized storms can become across Nebraska, the more likely they will survive long enough to produce some rainfall across northern Kansas. Without any storm organization (i.e. either strong cold pools and/or MCV development) increasing capping to the south would quickly kill off any convection moving into the area. Overall, continue to only keep PoP in the 10-30 percent range each night through Friday.
