.UPDATE...

900 AM MST UPDATE...The morning update has been published. Light
snow from this morning has diminished in coverage, though periods
of snow will continue today for areas along the Divide and over
the central mountains. Temperatures will generally be slightly
colder than yesterday, and highs were lowered a bit for most
locations. Southwesterly flow aloft will increase tonight into
Sunday, increasing light snow chances across the region. This will
be followed by the coldest temperatures of the season so far.-RCG

745 AM MST UPDATE...The combination of subzero temperatures and
10 to 20 mph northerly winds has allowed wind chill values to fall
in the -20F to -30F range over the Hi-Line. A Wind Chill Advisory
was issued for these areas and will run through 11 AM Sunday.
Additional wind chill products will likely be needed beyond this
time as colder air moves into the region Sunday and Monday. The
situation will continue to be monitored over the next few shifts.

.SYNOPSIS...

Cold air from Canada has engulfed much of the North-Central region,
as high temperatures linger as single digits before plummeting below
zero. The cold weather pattern and periods of snow will persist
through Christmas and the rest of the weekend, with even colder air
arriving Sunday and lasting through mid-week. Highs will be in the
single digits above and below zero by Tuesday, with lows in the
teens and 20s below zero. Periods of light snow are also expected to
accompany the Arctic chill.

Low clouds and areas of light snow will continue across the plains
this afternoon as southwesterly flow aloft runs over cold air at the
surface. Clearer conditions are expected across Southwestern Montana
early today, but snow will redevelop across the area later this
evening and spread northeastward, bringing a steadier round of snow
to the plains late tonight and into tomorrow morning. Ludwig

West to southwesterly flow persists aloft for the next few days.
The cold air from Canada has engulfed much of the North-Central
region, with high temperatures lingering as single digits before
plummeting below zero. Widespread light snow expected across the
region; however, accumulation will generally be less than one inch
for most locations. Areas immediately adjacent to the Rocky
Mountain Front, as well as near West Yellowstone will see heavier
and longer lasting snow. Thus, a Winter Weather Advisory for the
Rocky Mountain Front is in affect until 5 PM this afternoon.

Much of the region is and will be experiencing light winds of 5
to 10 mph predominately from the north to northeast through
tonight and into the morning. These winds, with our already colder
temperatures, will bring wind chills around 20 below zero
beginning in East Glacier and then extending eastward along the
Hi-Line over the next few days. Wind chill products will be
considered by future shifts as wind chills appear to only
progressively get colder as we advance in time.

Conditions temporarily begin to improve Saturday afternoon,
though the cold temperatures will sustain over the region.
Southwesterly flow aloft begins to increase Saturday night into
early Sunday associated with a deep, positively-tilted trough
pushes in from the west, bringing significantly colder and
extensive airmass into the North-Central region. Colder
temperatures will dip much further than the initial wave of cold
air, extending far south into the Southwest region. This frigid
air will linger for several days, and will bring extended periods
of subzero temperatures to the entire CWA. Much of the North-
Central region will likely plunge to 20 below zero Sunday night,
with wind chills in dangerously low temperatures around 30 to 40
below zero.

In addition to the significantly colder temperatures, moisture
associated with the southwesterly flow aloft will stream over the
cold airmass, likely bringing another light to moderate snow event
to the region. Accumulation will range from 1 to 3 inches for
most locations, but higher amounts are expected for southern
Madison and Gallatin counties. A Winter Weather Advisory was
considered for these counties, but with the affected area being
spatially limited, opted to not issue one.

This dangerously cold snap is expected to last through mid-week,
as downsloping westerly Chinook winds will begin to disintegrate
the cold air from the Southwest region and along the Rocky
Mountain Front beginning Thursday next week. Although temperatures
will begin to gradually warm up as a result, these Chinook winds
may cause blowing snow that has settled over the region, and may
require high wind highlights late next week, though confidence
remains low as this event is several days out.

Finally, by the end of next week, there is a chance of an end of
the year system that may bring light snow into the New Year;
however, confidence is low regarding details on timing,
accumulation, and location at this time. - Pierce
