Scattered mountain snow showers are possible along the Divide from late this morning through early this evening, but otherwise a dry and mild day is store for the remaining locations across Southwest through North Central Montana. A fast moving disturbance will then impact the region Monday through Tuesday. Marginal temperatures over this timeframe will allow precipitation to start initially as rain before transitioning to snow Monday night. && .UPDATE... The morning update has been published. Only minor adjustments were done to sky grids and patchy fog in the southwest per current trends. Generally expecting a quiet day today, though there will be a few snow showers along the Divide through this evening. Cooler and unsettled weather returns for Monday, along with the potential for accumulating snow. RCG && .AVIATION... 1117 AM MST Sun Mar 7 2021 (07/18Z TAF period) VFR conditions continue for much of the TAF period, though there will be mountain obscuring scattered snow showers along the Divide through this evening. After a brief period of partial clearing, middle and higher level cloudiness begins to increase tonight as the next Pacific system approaches from the southwest. Snow develops along the Rocky Mountain Front and adjacent plains Monday morning, resulting in possible MVFR/IFR conditions at KCTB toward the end of the TAF period. This activity will likely move into central/north- central areas and impact KHLN, KGTF later Monday afternoon and evening. RCG Refer to weather.gov/zlc for more detailed regional aviation weather and hazard information. && .PREV DISCUSSION... /ISSUED 315 AM MST Sun Mar 7 2021/ Today through tonight...transient ridging between the departing shortwave to the northeast and longwave trough/closed low over the Eastern Pacific will move over the Northern Rockies from this morning and through the early afternoon hours today. This pattern will bring relatively dry (with the exception of the Rocky Mountain Front and far eastern mountains of Beaverhead County) and mild conditions to most of the CWA for the day today; however, temperatures will be some 5 to 10 degrees cooler than on Saturday. Scattered snow showers will be possible from late this morning and through the early evening hours tonight along the Continental Divide as weak mid-level warm air advection lifts northeast across the region, which could lead to snow accumulations of up to 2" in these mountainous areas. Breezy south to southwest winds this afternoon will gradually decrease during the evening hours tonight, and back to the east to northerly over the plains of Central and North Central Montana near sunrise on Monday as a surface low begins to develop near Yellowstone National Park. - Moldan Monday through Tuesday night...this period will be the most impactful timeframe over the next seven day, with accumulating precipitation expected over most of the CWA. Surface low developing near Yellowstone National Park late tonight/Monday morning will move northeast into Southeastern Montana by Monday night, and eventually Eastern North Dakota by Tuesday morning. Low level flow will back to the east to north over the plains of Central and North Central Montana in response to the surface and mid-level low tracks, which will provide ideal upslope conditions along the eastern and northern slopes of the Rocky Mountain Front and Central Montana mountains. Marginal temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s during the day on Monday at lower elevations will likely allow precipitation to begin as rain or a rain/snow mix; however, cold air advecting into the region late Monday afternoon and evening will then allow precipitation to become all snow. Additionally, a narrow, but intense area of mid-level frontogenesis will pivot across portions of Southwest through Central Montana from late Monday morning through Tuesday evening. This narrow, but intense area of mid-level frontogenesis will likely lead to a narrower corridor (give or take 50 miles) of QPF amounts approaching 0.25" to 0.5" (falling as primarily all snow given dynamic cooling processes) across this region (i.e. generally along a line from Wisdom, to Helena, to Belt). I am concerned that areas beneath the most intense precipitation during this fast hitting storm could see snowfall accumulations of 3-6", but given the marginal surface temperatures and antecedent warm ground I am unsure as to how much snow will accumulate on road surfaces. Given this uncertainty I have held off on any winter highlights for now, but should the forecast trend colder or confidence increase that impactful snow accumulations will occur on roads then winter weather highlights will likely be needed. Precipitation will gradually wind down Tuesday morning over North Central Montana, and Tuesday afternoon over Southwest Montana. - Moldan Wednesday through next Sunday...temperatures will slowly moderate through the rest of the work week despite large scale troughing remaining in place over the Western CONUS.
