.UPDATE...

Pacific cold front continues to move east across the region this
evening beneath an upper level trough moving inland.
Radar/satellite observations show precipitation coverage
increasing behind the front upper level energy with the trough
move into the region and expect this area of rain/snow showers to
gradually shift SE across the forecast area overnight. Cooling
aloft will allow snow levels to fall through the rest of this
evening with precipitation type turning to primarily snow at most
locations by shortly after midnight. Some weak instability is also
present and while the potential for lightning is low, convective
nature to precipitation could allow snow levels and precipitation
intensity to vary quite a bit early tonight. Made some adjustments
to pops/weather to follow latest observed trends but overall
forecast is in good shape. Winter weather advisories continue for
portions of the area where an inch or more snow accumulation is
expected tonight. While most lower elevation areas see
accumulations of an inch or less, potential for icy roads later
tonight through Wednesday morning exists as temperatures fall

.SYNOPSIS...
A Pacific cold front will move through the region tonight
producing areas of rain and snow. Colder air move into the region
on Wednesday. However, a very strong cold front is forecast to
move through the region from Friday night into Saturday.
Temperatures are likely to fall below zero over much of North
Central MT this weekend, along with periods of snow.

1025 PM MST Tue Feb 2 2021 (03/06Z TAF period)

A Pacific cold front continues to cross the region late this evening
is bringing some rain/snow showers and local MVFR conditions. Later
tonight, expect a greater coverage of precipitation to develop
across central and SW MT as the front shifts southeast. IFR ceilings
and visibility will become more widespread across SW MT terminals
overnight with precipitation becoming primarily snow after midnight.
Snow could linger in the KBZN and KLWT area into Wednesday morning
with precipitation ending fairly quickly from NW to SE otherwise
late tonight. Surface winds shift from southwest to west this
evening with the initial Pacific front then shift to northerly as a
Canadian cold front sweeps south across the area late tonight into
Wednesday morning.

Tonight through Friday...A Pacific cold front will move from west
to east across the region tonight. A band of rain/snow will
accompany the frontal passage. Temperatures will fall quickly to
near freezing, especially in the mountains. Thus a winter weather
advisory has been issued for areas that will generally receive 1
inch or more of snowfall. Blowing snow along with roadways
freezing over will likely add to the impacts. Temperatures on
Wednesday will be much colder, and I blended the NBM with some
colder guidance as well. Most of the snow ends Wednesday morning,
expect in the Bozeman area, where it could continue until late
morning. Some scattered snow showers possible Wed afternoon into

highlights.

Friday and Saturday...The main cold front is expected to move
southward through the region Friday night into Saturday. This is
now a bit slower than yesterday's run. However, there is the
potential for very cold air to move into the region behind the
front on Saturday. I blended the NBM temperatures with colder
guidance, but overall there is the potential temperatures could
be much colder than currently forecast. A fairly fast moving band
of snow is likely to move through the region along the cold front.
For now, snow accumulations of 2 to 5 inches look possible at
lower elevations, with 6 to 10 inches possible in the mountains.
Snowfall will be a bit lighter in the Harlem and Dillon areas.
Winter highlights will likely be needed for this event.

Sunday through Tuesday...Generally expect cold/very cold
temperatures to reside over our region for early next week. The
forecast models continue to struggle on how far south the cold air
will move, thus significant adjustments to temperatures are
likely. Additionally, the GFS/EC continue to differ on the
potential for snowfall along the cold air boundary. For now, the
NBM blend is quite low on pops early next week because of the
uncertainty, but there is the potential that snowfall could be

...Light to moderate snow early this morning causing areas of
challenging travel conditions...

Light to occasionally moderate snow will cause periods of
difficult travel through the early morning hours. Highways
impacted include US Highways 191 and 87. Snow will diminish in
intensity and coverage by sunrise, with snow accumulations
generally less than 1 inch, but with localized higher
accumulations up to 2 inches over mountain passes.
