Surface low pressure trough to the lee of the Rockies is filling
this morning with strong winds along the east slopes decreasing
over the last several hours. Decrease in the stronger winds and
scouring of the snow has brought some improvement to
blowing/drifting snow issues across parts of north-central MT and
will likely further improve allowing the winter weather advisory
for blowing snow to expire at noon. Meanwhile, the very cold
airmass that had receded to the north and east overnight is moving
back to the south with leading edge south through Cut Bank and
expected to continue south across the rest of the north-central
MT plains by early this afternoon. This will result in falling
temperatures for most of north-central MT following the front this
morning with winds also shifting to the north. Areas of light
snow already occurring across the mountains and across northern
and eastern portions of north-central MT will increase as the
front moves south into central MT later today. Only changes to
today's forecast were to adjust temps and winds to align with
observed trends this morning and anticipated cooling through this

.SYNOPSIS...

Downslope southwest winds will continue to produce blowing snow
along the Rocky Mountain Front and Montana Hwy 200 corridor
through this morning, along with rising temperatures across the
region. Another cold front will then begin to advance south across
the region from the mid-morning through evening hours tonight,
bringing falling temperatures and snow back to most locations
through Friday.

A cold front will begin to advance south across North Central
Montana through the mid-morning to early afternoon hours, Central
Montana during the late morning to mid-afternoon, and Southwest
Montana during the late afternoon to early evening. This cold front
will bring about a wind shift to the north, in addition to
increasing chances for light snow. MVFR/IFR conditions are expected
due to a combination of reduced cigs and/or visibility with the
snow. Mountain obscuration is likely throughout the TAF period.

.PREV DISCUSSION...
/ISSUED 430 AM MST Thu Dec 30 2021/

Today through Friday...Strong southwest to westerly winds associated
with a northeastward advancing warming front have produced
widespread blowing and drifting of snow during the overnight hours
along the Rocky Mountain Front and Montana Hwy 200 corridor; which
has led to numerous road closures along the Rocky Mountain Front in
and around the Browning and East Glacier areas. Given that these
winds are expected to persist into the mid- to late morning hours,
have extended the Winter Weather Advisory until noon MDT for the
Rocky Mountain Front; in addition to expanding the advisory to
include all of Glacier, Cascade, Judith Basin, and Fergus Counties.
Temperatures across the plains of Central and North Central Montana
have been steadily warming all night due to the northeastward
advancing warm front, with most areas south and west of a Cut Bank
to Lewistown line sitting in the teens above zero as of 0930z. As
the warm front continue to advance north, expect the remaining
plains locations to warm into the upper single digits to teens above
zero, with most valley locations across Southwest Montana warming
into the teens to low 20s above zero by the end of day. With wind
chill values rising above warning or advisory level through the
remainder of the morning, will allow the current wind chill
highlights to expire at 12z this morning.

Otherwise the main concern for the remainder of the day will be a
southward surging cold front, which is expected to cross North
Central Montana through the mid-morning to early afternoon hours,
Central Montana during the late morning to mid-afternoon, and
Southwest Montana during the late afternoon to early evening. While
temperatures are not expected to plummet behind this southward
advancing cold front, a steady to slow fall in temperatures should
be expected. In addition, light to at times moderate snow can be
expected to accompany the cold front, especially in the northerly
upslope favored regions of Southwest through North Central Montana.
Snow accumulations from today through Friday afternoon of up to 2"
inches are possible across lower elevations (especially in the
northerly upslope favored regions where backed flow and persistent
light snow will occur), with up to 4 inches in most mountain and
pass locations. Given that these amounts are spread out over a 36hr
window and are similar to the most recent event (Tuesday night
through Wednesday), have elected to hold off on any winter weather
highlights as impacts are expected to be minor. Low temperatures
tonight behind the cold front are expected to fall into the teens to
low 20s below zero across the plains of Central and North Central
Montana, and the single digits above and below zero across the
valleys of Southwest and Central Montana. A ~1030mb surface high
sliding south along the Canadian Rockies and towards the Northern
Rockies/High Plains during the day on Friday will give way to a cold
day, with highs across the plains of Central and North Central
Montana struggling to rise into the singles digits below zero, and
the valleys of Southwest and Central Montana only seeing readings
rise into the single digits to teens above zero. - Moldan

Saturday through Monday...temperatures across the region will
steadily warm throughout the period, with the warmest days of Sunday
and Monday peaking in the upper 20s to mid-30s at most locations. It
is possible that the current temperature forecast for the valleys of
Southwest and Central Montana may be too warm (by 5 to 10 degrees
due a strong temperature inversion across these valleys); however,
given the expected increase in winds I felt that the NBM
temperatures were okay for now. As just previously mentioned, and
will most likely be the biggest story/impact of the period, winds
across the region will be on the increase across all of Southwest
through North Central Montana; especially along the Rocky
Mountain Front, Montana Hwy 200 corridor, and Madison Valley in
Southwest Montana. Current deterministic guidance would suggest
that some locations across the region may need future high wind
highlights over the weekend, but given that confidence was below
50% as of this forecast I have held-off on any highlights. -
