What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Salt Lake City, UT wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Jul 9, 4:24 AM MDT, 10 hours 19 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 9, 4:24 AM MDT, 10 hours 19 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
424 AM MDT Fri Jul 9 2021

.SYNOPSIS...A strong area of high pressure will maintain very hot
conditions across the region through the upcoming weekend.

&&

.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Monday)...An elongated mid level ridge
centered along the Utah Arizona border will retrograde slowly
over the next couple of days, eventually becoming centered over
the southern Great Basin Sunday. This is in response to a
shortwave trough currently translating through the northern
Rockies, which will eventually dig through the Central Plains
Saturday. A trailing dry front will push through northern Utah
later today, bringing a very slight cooling trend to northern Utah
heading into the weekend. The models have been trending warmer
with the post- frontal airmass with max temps still expected to
run in mid to upper 90s along the Wasatch Front Saturday while
little if any change is noted across the south.

Have left going excessive heat headlines in place with this
forecast package, with northern warnings set to expire this
evening, eastern valleys persisting through Saturday, and southern
valleys continuing through the weekend. With very limited cooling
Saturday followed by a quick rebound in temps across the north
Sunday into early next week, may need to look into extending these
headlines beyond their current expiration times.

Moisture which as crept into southern Utah allowed for a few high
based showers and thunderstorms over and adjacent to the higher
terrain of southern Utah late Thursday afternoon/evening, and
expect somewhat better coverage this afternoon and evening. As
such have trended PoPs upward across the southern mountains this
afternoon, with convection expected to spread south/southwest into
the evening. Heavy rainfall is not expected, although measurable
rainfall can be expected with this activity particularly over the
higher terrain, as dew points across southwest Utah have risen
into the low-mid 40s. Drier northerly flow should significantly
limit any convective potential over the weekend.

.LONG TERM (After 12Z Monday)...Models continue to be in good
agreement through at least Wednesday regarding the large-scale
pattern, in which the ridge over the area will gradually flatten.
Monday will be the hottest day while the ridge is the strongest,
but then temperatures will lower from near record territory back
to only about 5 degrees above normal by Wednesday. Tuesday is a
questionable day as far as temperatures as cloud cover could
offset the still very warm 700mb temperatures. The deterministic
GFS appears to be the most bullish on tapping deeper moisture
Tuesday with PWs in excess of 1 inch across western and southern
Utah and over 0.80 of an inch elsewhere. About 80% of the 30 GEFs
members show at least 0.01 of an inch of precip at CDC Tuesday,
while 64% of the 50 member EPS show 0.01 of an inch compared to
the NBM which only shows 46% chance of 0.01 of an inch. Looking at
the overall pattern the drier NBM solution appears the most
likely with the flow becoming more zonal its hard to see how
moisture is tapped as readily as the GFS deterministic shows.

There are subtle differences in the position of the 500mb ridge over
the general southern portion of the Great Basin Wednesday through
Saturday but the sensible conditions at the surface are negligible,
so just went with the NBM which keeps temperatures above normal and
warming slightly between Wednesday and Friday.

&&

.AVIATION...KSLC...Southerly winds are expected to shift back
to northwesterly after about 17-18Z. Temperatures over 100F (38C)
will be a concern for density altitude from about 20Z through about
02Z this evening.

Rest of Utah and southwest Wyoming...VFR conditions are expected
with some isolated high-based showers developing mostly on the lee
side (east) of the southern and central Utah mountains, Book Cliffs,
and Uintas and drifting across the eastern Utah valleys through
around 02Z. Erratic wind gusts to 35 mph will occur with most of
these storms.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...A weak weather system passing well north of the area
will result in breezy west to northwest winds today across northern
and central Utah east of I-15. These winds will become northerly but
remain gusty across central Utah into Saturday. Otherwise high
pressure will continue to bring hot and generally dry conditions to
the region through the upcoming weekend and into early next week,
with temperatures continuing to run 10 to 15 degrees above normal.

Across southern Utah, a few high based showers and dry thunderstorms
will be possible this afternoon and evening. Early next week moisture
is expected to begin spreading into the area, and increasing through
midweek, bringing a better chance for showers and thunderstorms
across much of Utah.
