.SYNOPSIS...Hot to very temperatures expected, as high pressure
builds across Utah. These hot and dry conditions will continue
throughout the week.
&&
.SHORT TERM (Through 12Z Saturday)...A dominant mid level ridge
across the region will push max temps 10 to 15 degrees above
climo over the next couple of days, challenging numerous daily
temperature records across the forecast area. Going heat messaging
covers this well, with triple digit heat expected across most
valleys through Thursday, while the lower elevations of southern
Utah reach or exceed the 110F mark.
With the ridge in place today, warm mid level temperatures will
cap any potential for convection, with the exception of far
northwest Utah where isolated convection is possible in the
vicinity of the Raft River range late this afternoon and evening.
This warm layer may relax a bit Thursday, and with an influx of
mid level moisture isolated convection will be possible across the
higher terrain of southern Utah.
A shortwave trough expected to cross the northern Rockies late
Thursday into Friday will push a shallow, dry cold front into
northern Utah. The models have trended a bit slower with this push
of cooler air into northern Utah, with most northern valleys
remaining in the mid to upper 90s Friday afternoon. Meanwhile the
lower elevations of southern Utah will continue to see max temps
at or above 110 through the short term period.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Saturday)...With the Pacific Northwest
trough exiting the area Friday night, high pressure is expected to
re- amplify over the area. Temperatures may remain slightly less
hot over northern Utah Saturday, but will warm slightly Sunday,
allowing maxes to again top the century mark over most northern
Utah valleys.
Ensemble guidance indicates a series of weak waves moving over
the top of the ridge late Sunday into Tuesday, with some
differences in the various members regarding the timing of these
features. Main impact across the forecast area would be to flatten
the ridge somewhat, curbing the warming trend. Most guidance also
indicates this will result in increasing mid and high level
moisture from the south, so have indicated an increasing trend in
POPs through day seven.

.AVIATION...KSLC...The SLC terminal will see VFR conditions
throughout the day with some scattered clouds. Southerly winds are
expected to shift to the northwest between 17Z and 19Z.
Rest of Utah and southwest Wyoming...VFR conditions will prevail
across the area through the valid TAF period, with only some
scattered clouds developing. &&
.FIRE WEATHER...A strong area of high pressure centered across
the region will bring triple digit heat to most valleys today and
again Thursday. Isolated showers and thunderstorms will be
possible in far northwest Utah this afternoon and evening, then
across the southern mountains Thursday afternoon.
A weather system passing well north of the area will bring an
increase in westerly winds to northern Utah Thursday afternoon and
evening, then gusty northwest winds across much of northern and
east central Utah Friday afternoon. A Red Flag Warning has been
issued for zones 479 and 492 for both Thursday and Friday
afternoons and evenings, and may need to be expanded in area
should the hot temperatures the next couple of days result in
additional zones becoming critically dry. Slightly cooler air is
expected to spread across northern Utah Friday into Saturday while
hot temperatures persist across the south through the upcoming
weekend.
