Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT
402 AM MDT Sun Jun 13 2021
.SYNOPSIS...A strong ridge of high pressure will build over the
region through the next several days, resulting in record
challenging heat beginning today and lasting throughout the week.
&&
.SHORT TERM...(Through 12Z Wednesday)...The main storyline in the
short term forecast period will continue to be heat. A strong
ridge of high pressure has developed across New Mexico, and this
will continue to strengthen and expand west and north into the
Great Basin through the period. The most noticeable increase in
high temperatures will be felt today as temperatures soar to 15-20
degrees above climatological normals. Further warming of 5 degrees
or so is anticipated for Monday, with temperatures leveling off
for Tuesday. Tuesday is currently forecast to be the hottest day
of the week across northern Utah and southwest Wyoming. The
official forecast of 104 degrees at SLC would break the previous
record for the day of 102. This would be the earliest 104 degree
reading on record, with the previous earliest occurring on June
28. The all-time SLC record of 107 appears relatively safe for
now, with the NBM probability of exceedance tool indicating a 17
percent chance of high temperatures reaching this threshold.
Farther south, the official forecast of 114 in St. George on
Tuesday falls only 3 degrees shy of Utah's all-time state record
high of 117 -- also set at St. George. NBM exceedance tool reveals
a 12 percent chance of reaching this mark. Numerous Heat
Advisories and Excessive Heat Warnings are in effect to account
for the extreme heat.
Meanwhile, a strong area of low pressure
will remain off of the Washington and Oregon coasts through
Monday. This will force the development of southwesterly flow
across Utah and southwest Wyoming beginning today, with a modest
increase in the flow Monday. This will result in the development
of breezy conditions. On Tuesday, the above- mentioned low will
weaken while lifting across the Northern Rockies. In the process,
southwesterly flow will continue to increase, bringing the
potential for gusts up to 40 mph across the western deserts as
well as exposed higher elevation areas. A narrow ribbon of mid-
level moisture is forecast to stream northward across central Utah
on Tuesday, and as a result an isolated shower will be possible
across higher elevation areas, but most will see little more than
an increase in cumulus buildup.
.LONG TERM (AFTER 12Z Wednesday)...A piece of energy breaking off a
lifting trough off the Pacific coast will somewhat flatten the ridge
in place, resulting in slightly cooler conditions in southwest
Wyoming and northern Utah Wednesday. Slightly cooler will still be
much above average, with highs in the mid 90s to right around 100F
in most locations.
This won't affect temperatures as much in the central and southern
part of Utah. There is good guidance agreement in the ridge
retrograding to the west, which would center it near the
Utah/Arizona border through at least Friday. Temperatures each day
will get to 105F+ around the San Rafael Swell and Lake Powell areas
and to 110F+ in lower Washington County. An Excessive Heat Warning
will be in effect through Friday for those locations.
With stronger subsidence in place, dry conditions will generally
continue. There is a chance for dry thunderstorms Thursday and
Friday afternoon. Little or no precipitation is expected, but an
isolated storm could result in lightning and enhanced outflow wind
gusts, increasing fire danger.
The overall set up will result in less of a synoptic wind than
what's expected Monday and Tuesday. The EPS mean brings speeds back
around model climatology starting Wednesday. Other guidance is
consistent in lighter speeds for southwest Wyoming and Utah through
Friday.
&&
.AVIATION...VFR conditions are expected through the valid TAF
period. Light south winds will increase late in the morning into the
afternoon, with gusts around 20 kts expected. There is uncertainty
in wind direction in the afternoon. Winds could become
west/northwest after 21Z, but there is a 40%-50% chance that flow
remains out of the south. Confidence will increase on wind direction
as the expected transition gets closer. Winds will either transition
to or remain southerly after 03Z. High afternoon clouds will clear
out in the evening.
Rest of Utah and southwest Wyoming...VFR conditions are expected
through the valid TAF period. Winds will remain light through the
morning, then increase in the afternoon. South/southwest gusts
exceeding 25 kts are expected in many locations. Some high afternoon
clouds are expected in southwest Wyoming and northern Utah. Clear
conditions are expected in southern Utah. Winds will diminish by
03Z.
KSLC...VFR conditions will prevail at SLC through the TAF period
with light, diurnal wind shifts from southeast at night through the
morning and northwest in the afternoon and early evening. Skies will
be mostly clear through the day with a few high clouds.
Rest of Utah and southwest Wyoming...VFR conditions are expected
through the valid TAF period with mostly clear skies outside of some
high-thin clouds at times. Winds will mainly be light and follow
usual diurnal patterns.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...Very strong high pressure will continue to
gradually strengthen across the four corners through the remainder
of this weekend with further strengthening through midweek while
gradually expanding west across the Great Basin. At the same time,
an area of low pressure will remain anchored off of the
Washington and Oregon coast. With Utah sandwiched between these
features, hot, dry and windy conditions can be expected. Southwest
flow across the state will begin to increase today, with further
modest increases expected both Monday and Tuesday, when the
strongest winds are expected. The windiest areas will be Southern
and Central Utah this afternoon and Monday. These winds are
expected to expand further north Tuesday as a trough moves
northeast across Idaho. Southwest wind gusts in the 30-40 mph
range will be common for all but sheltered areas. Fire Weather
Watches have been expanded north through Tuesday, with Red Flag
Warnings in effect Sunday and Monday.
Winds should begin to subside by Wednesday as the ridge expands
overhead. Meanwhile, abnormally hot (near record to record)
temperatures are forecast across the state, with medium to high
confidence in these conditions persisting throughout the week. A
slight increase in mid-level moisture embedded within the southwest
flow may lead to an isolated shower across the central and southern
Mountains Tuesday. Instability appears too limited to support
thunder at this time, but this potential will continue to be
monitored. Expect mainly a building cumulus field Tuesday
in association with the mid-level moisture increase. This
moisture is expected to move off to the north and east Wednesday,
with no shower activity expected. By Thursday and Friday, some
models begin to hint at a modest influx of moisture from south
to north. Confidence is low at this time whether this
will be enough moisture to produce any shower or thunderstorm
activity for late-week.
