.SYNOPSIS...Strong high pressure will continue to gradually build
into Utah and southwest Wyoming through the end of the week. This
will allow for a significant warming trend across the area with
record or near record high temperatures forecast for Thursday and
Friday.
&&
.SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z SATURDAY)...Strong high pressure continues
to slowly shift east across the western CONUS and should be over
Utah by Thursday night/Friday. Temperatures will continue to warm
under the building ridge through Friday. A dry airmass remains in
place over Utah today, with patchy high clouds clearing out from
north to south through the morning hours.
Forecast max temperatures will already be rather hot today, ranging
from 8-14 degrees above climatological normals, and including 90s in
some of the valleys of western and southern Utah and portions of the
central and southern Wasatch Front. This is due to H7 temperatures
rising to 13-15C with excellent mixing owing to mostly clear skies.
Temperatures tomorrow could reach or exceed daily records at some
sites, as once again, mostly clear skies will allow for excellent
mixing of 14-17C H7 temperatures. Friday should see the warmest
temperatures of this regime, with afternoon maxes 12-20 degrees
above normal underneath H5 heights of 588dam and H7 temperatures
peaking at 18C over central Utah. However, midlevel moisture may
increase into the area, which could potentially bring increased
cloud cover and a few high-based showers. If this occurs, this may
temper the warming trend a bit, but this moisture is more prominent
in the GFS/NAM and not so much in the EC.
It is noted that max temperatures from the deterministic NBM are on
the lower end of the spread for a number of sites through the short
term forecast period, and even below the 25th percentile in some
spots. As a result, there may be a greater chance for temperatures
to end up warmer than forecast rather than cooler. No changes made
to current heat highlights at this time, but will have to continue
to monitor forecast trends to see if additional highlights may be
necessary, especially for Friday.
.LONG TERM (After 12Z Saturday)...With the axis of the high
amplitude ridge east of the forecast area toward the end of the work
week, a subtle "cooling" trend is anticipated through the weekend.
With that being said, daytime high temperatures are still expected
to be running 10-15F above average across a large majority of Utah
and southwest Wyoming... so don't expect any relief from the heat.
Additionally, a net increase in PWAT values across the eastern Great
Basin should allow for some isolated to scattered showers and
thunderstorms over the high terrain on Saturday. Given that a large
majority of this moisture looks to be confined to the middle and
upper levels, anticipating mainly high based convection and little
QPF in adjacent valley areas.
Looking into early next week, ensemble guidance continues in great
agreement of a broad trough settling over the PacNW region with
further deepening of the trough through Tuesday. Confidence in the
east-west orientation of this trough has increased a bit in the last
24 hours, with odds favoring a trough axis developing just offshore
of the U.S. West Coast or just along the coastline. In any case, the
overall flow pattern does not appear to be in favor for seeing any
sort of wetter weather over the interior West. Rather, an enhanced
dry southwesterly flow aloft will be maintained over the area...
which will likely lead to some critical fire weather concerns across
the CWA (especially southwestern Utah). The only real beneficial
implication of this synoptic pattern will be to bring a gradual
lowering of geopotential heights and thus a net cooling of the
airmass. Otherwise, will need to continue to monitor trends in the
location of the aforementioned trough. If a further westward
regression of the feature is seen, then fire weather concerns may
be of lesser concern. However, if a further eastward shift in the
axis is seen, will likely see higher wind speeds and greater fire
concern.

.AVIATION...KSLC...Minimal operational concerns are forecast for the
KSLC terminal through the TAF period. Thin, high cirrus coverage
will decrease through the morning hours, with largely clear skies
prevailing thereafter. Light southerly drainage winds will persist
through the morning, reverting to a northwesterly flow after 17Z.
Rest of Utah and southwest Wyoming...VFR conditions are expected to
prevail across the area, with decreasing high level cloud cover.
Expecting diurnally driven flow to prevail across the area through
the next 24 hours, with surface wind speeds generally under 12kts.

.FIRE WEATHER...High pressure will continue to build into the
region over the next couple of days, with temperatures continuing to
warm underneath it. The warmest day is expected to be Friday for
most areas, with record or near-record temperatures possible mainly
Thursday and Friday. The airmass will remain dry today and tomorrow,
with some cumulus buildups over the higher terrain. By Friday,
midlevel moisture should increase enough to allow for a potential
for isolated mostly dry thunderstorms. Showers and thunderstorms are
then expected to increase in coverage for Saturday, with some
lingering showers on Sunday before the airmass trends drier once
again. By late in the weekend and into early next week, an increase
in southwest flow may produce hazardous fire weather conditions.
