Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 437 AM MDT Tue Jun 1 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Strong high pressure will gradually build into Utah through at least Thursday. This will allow for a drying and significant warming trend across the area with record or near record high temperatures forecast by Thursday. && .SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z FRIDAY)...The short term forecast period will be dominated by strong high pressure which will make its way from the West Coast states this morning to being centered over Utah by late Thursday afternoon. This pattern will maintain generally dry conditions over the forecast area while temperatures will trend warmer over the next few days. Afternoon max temperatures are already forecast to be 5-10 degrees above climatological normals today, as H7 temperatures rise to between 10-14C. By Thursday, H7 temperatures will continue to rise to between 15-17C. This should translate to unseasonably warm temperatures at the surface, with the current forecast approaching or exceeding records for some sites by Thursday. The forecast has some northern Utah sites reaching the low 90s tomorrow, and most lower valleys of Utah should see 90s on Thursday. Triple digits are in store for the St George area beginning tomorrow. Given good predictability with high pressure and thus little model spread, confidence is high regarding the warming trend. The only thing that could moderate temperatures would be moisture and clouds. However, besides afternoon buildups of cumulus over the higher terrain and patchy high clouds, cloud cover does not look significant enough at this time to temper the warming trend. .LONG TERM (After 12Z Friday)...The axis of a significant ridge positioned over the Western U.S. is progged to be east of the forecast area by early Friday morning, however, well above average temperatures are anticipated to continue through at least Saturday. As the middle and upper level ridge axis translates downstream, the warmest 700mb air is forecast to move over the area by Friday and allow temperatures to warm just a bit further. Current guidance is favoring Friday as the hottest day of the week, with temperatures remaining 10-20F above average. Ensemble guidance continues to show the greatest height anomalies across the northern portions of the CWA, so expecting to see highs running closer to the 20F above average mark across the northern half of the CWA and closer to the 10F above average mark across the southern half. Additionally, with the axis of the ridge downstream, return flow will also bring a net increase in middle and upper level moisture which may allow for convective showers to spread across the high terrain through the weekend. A gradual cooling of daytime high temperatures, especially across the northern half of the area, is expected through the weekend as a mean longwave trough begins to settle into the PacNW region and flattens the aforementioned ridge. Ensemble guidance remains in good agreement of this setup, and has now begun to favor this trough settling even further south along the U.S. West Coast. As this occurs, enhanced dry southwesterly flow aloft will develop across the area by early next week and could lead to some critical fire weather conditions as afternoon gusty winds combine with already warm and dry conditions. Confidence in the synoptic setup leading to this potential event is high at this time, however, the east-west orientation of the mean trough is less certain. Will have to watch trends with the ensembles to dial in the details of this next potential fire weather event. && .AVIATION...KSLC...Minimal operational concerns are forecast for the KSLC terminal, with VFR conditions anticipated to continue through the valid TAF period. Light southerly drainage winds will continue through morning hours becoming northwesterly after about 17Z. Rest of Utah and southwest Wyoming...VFR conditions are expected to prevail across the western two-thirds of Utah and southwest Wyoming through the next 24 hours. Afternoon cumulus build ups are anticipated over the higher terrain, with thin cirrus spreading across much of the area. && .FIRE WEATHER...High pressure will continue to build into Utah through much of the week. This will result in an unseasonably warm airmass across the area. Temperatures could reach or exceed records Thursday and/or Friday. Dry conditions will remain in place during this time, although afternoon buildups of cumulus will be possible over the higher terrain.
