and continuing through Monday in the mountains. The Cajon Pass and
the I-8 corridor will likely be impacted. The Ortega Highway may

  Mountains, 2 to 6 inches between 3,000 and 4,000 feet, and 8 to

  inches possible, especially at the higher elevations of the San
  Bernardino and Riverside Mountains, as well as near Cuyamaca
  Peak and Mount Laguna in San Diego County. Plan on difficult

.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure centered over Southern California early this morning
will be headed east in a hurry, as another, colder storm dives south
along the West Coast. Showers will break out this evening and
become widespread overnight through early Monday morning. Rain will
turn to snow as very cold air pours in from the north, dropping snow
levels to 2000 to 3000 feet. Expect travel impacts in the mountains
and along the major passes. Gale force winds and dangerous seas
will develop over the coastal waters with strong winds along the
Coast as well. Highs Monday will be around 20 degrees below normal
away from the Coast. The mid week period will feature quiet weather
with gradual warming ahead of another large and slower moving storm
bringing heavy rain and mountain snow to northern and central
portions of the State. That one could arrive here Thursday night or
Friday with more widespread rain and higher snow levels.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Satellite imagery at 8 AM PST showed clouds spreading slowly south
across SoCal in the wake of Saturday's storm that left heavy snow in
the San Bernardino Mountains and widespread wetting rains at lower
elevations. A few showers continue, mainly over the mountains this
morning, but radar indications are they are very light and about to
end. Our latest storm precip totals are headlined on our webpage.
Where skies cleared, temperatures plummeted this morning. At sunup,
all lower elevations sites were in the 30s and 40s. No 12Z Miramar
sounding is available this morning. Winds were light.

Look for some breaks in the clouds today in between storms. The
next one headed south along the West Coast could start thickening
them back up later this afternoon with a few light showers possible
near or just after sunset. Those showers will consolidate along the
coastal slopes through the evening as moist, upslope flow
strengthens. A Winter Storm Watch remains in effect for our
mountains. Watch for upgrades and possible issuance of additional
weather products today in advance of the Monday storm.

From previous discussion...

.SHORT TERM...(through Tuesday
Significant wrap-around moisture and associated showers since
Saturday evening has resulted in a boost to snowfall totals across
the San Bernardino mountains, with multiple reports of total
snowfall around 1 foot in some mountain communities. Snow levels
near 2,500 ft allowed for snow accumulation in the High Desert, with
Hesperia picking up 3 inches over the past few hours. A few light
showers will linger through early morning before the system finally
exits the region.

Little waiting will be involved as our next storm, the second of
this trifecta, quickly approaches Sunday night, with isolated pre-
frontal showers possible Sunday evening. Climatologically, this
will be an exceptionally cold system with 700 mb temperatures
lowering to around -13 C. As a result, temperatures on Monday will
run 15 to 25 degrees below normal during the day, with sub-
freezing temperatures overnight for many inland areas. The bulk of
the precipitation will fall Sunday night through Monday morning,
with snow levels lowering from around 4,000 ft Sunday, to around
2,000-2,500 ft by Monday afternoon. The northwest flow should
again favor San Diego County for the highest rain and snow totals,
where between 1 and 2 inches of liquid equivalent look likely for
the valleys and mountains (translating into 1+ FT of snow for
much of the San Diego County mountains). Travel impacts are
expected to be severe, with several inches of snow affecting all
mountain areas and major passes (I- 15/Cajon Pass, and
particularly I-8 where snow may be heaviest), as well as more
minor accumulations for lower elevation areas like the High
Desert, I-10 corridor near Yucaipa, and far inland
valleys/foothills of San Diego County. Additionally, the cold air
mass aloft will contribute to an unstable environment and a chance
of thunderstorms through the day. With more convective
characteristics relative to our Saturday system, heavier showers
and small hail can be expected at times.

In addition to the rain and snow, this system will pack a punch when
it comes to winds. This is especially the case for our coastal
communities, particularly the San Diego County coast, where
sustained winds of 25 to 35 mph, and gusts to 50 mph (and locally
even higher) can be expected on Monday, strongest in the afternoon.
This will be a significant wind event for the coast, as coastal
zones are rarely impacted by winds this strong, so there's a high
likelihood of downed trees and tree limbs, damage to weak fencing,
etc. Winds will be gusty across the region however, including desert-
facing mountain slopes where gusts should locally exceed 60 mph.
The combination of strong winds and cold temperatures will result
in potentially dangerous wind chills for portions of the
mountains. Monitor the forecast closely over the coming hours for
updates to current/future winter weather and wind products.

.LONG TERM...
Guidance has trended later and a little lighter on the third system
for later in the week. Precipitation now looks to start closer to
Thursday, with the heavier stuff on Friday. Uncertainty remains
regarding exact amounts, but all areas should see at least modest
rainfall (between 0.5-1.5"), with potential for higher amounts
closer to 2 or even 3", especially for the northern half of our
forecast area and the coastal slopes of the Transverse Range. Snow
levels will mostly be above 5,000-5,500 (a little higher in San
Diego County), with several inches of snow likely for the higher
elevation mountain communities, some of which may pick up another
foot of snow quite easily unless the forecast trends considerably
drier over the next few days. For most areas, this is likely to be
the wettest storm of the three (this is more in question for San
Diego County, where storm number 2 *could* be the winner). Localized
flooding will be possible in areas that receive heavier rainfall,
and runoff will be enhanced along the lower mountain slopes as the
rain accelerates snowmelt.

241615Z...Coast/Valleys/Mountains...Areas of SCT-BKN clouds pushing
southward 2500-3500 FT MSL with patchy fog obscuring higher terrain
this morning. SCT-FEW clouds near 5000 FT MSL in the mountains later
this morning into the afternoon. After 00Z Monday, showers return
with variable cigs 015-040. Mountains will again be obscured in fog
with low visibility at times.

Deserts...SCT-BKN070-100 this morning with skies slowly clearing
into the afternoon. Showers return after 06Z Monday with cigs abv
3000 ft MSL.

.MARINE...
Showers decreasing today, with light morning winds becoming westerly
and increasing to 15-25 kt this afternoon. A Small Craft Advisory is
in effect from Noon today until 2 AM Monday.

Winds become gale force from early Monday morning around 11Z from
west to east through Tuesday, increasing to 25-35 kts with gusts to
45 kts. Dangerous boating conditions with combined seas 10-15 feet
across the Inner Waters, and up to 18 feet across the Outer Waters,
heavy rain and poor visibilities. A Gale Warning is in effect from 2
AM Monday to 10 PM Tuesday.

Increasing showers with a chance for thunderstorms late tonight
through through Monday.

.BEACHES...
Very windy Monday and Tuesday, with short-period swells producing
high surf of up to 10 feet in south San Diego County. Please see the
High Surf Advisory for details. There will also be a chance for
thunderstorms on Monday.

.HYDROLOGY...
Spotty showers will break out this evening and consolidate along the
coastal slopes during the night. A strong cold front will follow,
expected to pass coastal areas around 4 AM PST. A solid band of
showers will accompany the front, with rain rates as high as two-to-
three tenths inch per hour. They will be moving at a good clip, so
excessive rainfall is unlikely. The snow level will plummet behind
the front from around 4000 feet to 2500-3500 feet. Heavy snow will
likely accumulate above 3500 feet in the mountains, while scattered
showers continue at times west of the mountains. A few of these
could be briefly heavy with small hail and thunder as the atmosphere
will be quite unstable. Local ponding of water and urban flooding is
possible near these heavier showers, and if they repeat (train) over
the same area, but the threat of flooding overall is low and any
runoff will be limited.

Precipitation estimates are currently for 1-2 inches liquid
equivalent in the mountains (mostly snow) and from one-third to
locally one inch west of the mountains. Once again the deserts
will see little, with amounts ranging from just a few hundredths
of an inch north and Coachella Valley, to locally one-third inch in
San Diego County.

Another storm system has the potential to bring more significant
precipitation to the region later in the week (late Thu/Fri), but
amounts of rainfall and timing are uncertain. This will be a much
warmer storm. Runoff potential will be greatly increased due
elevated atmospheric moisture availability, already moistened
ground, melting snow, and higher snow levels. Interested parties
should closely monitor the forecast over the next few days.
