Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Diego CA 910 AM PDT Sun Aug 1 2021 .SYNOPSIS... Building high pressure will lead to rising temperatures and a shrinking marine layer through the middle of the week, with coastal low clouds becoming less likely the next few nights. Heat will peak Tuesday and Wednesday, before gradually cooling later on. No monsoon activity is expected this week. && .DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE... SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO COUNTIES... MORNING UPDATE... Low clouds once again straddled coastal San Diego County this morning, producing patchy dense fog across the coastal mesas and some of the lower elevations. These have cleared quickly over land, with just a few lingering clouds along the beaches as of 9 AM. The 12Z sounding depicts much drier conditions relative to yesterday, with a PWAT value of just 0.65". This lack of moisture will prevent thunderstorms from developing today, though some spotty cumulus can still be expected over the mountains. High pressure will continue its westward expansion over the next few days, raising temperatures and limiting marine layer clouds. PREVIOUS DISCUSSION... At 2 AM, patchy low clouds are present off the coast of San Diego County, while skies remained clear elsewhere. Low clouds will continue to develop this morning, spreading up to 10 miles inland. Some patchy dense fog is possible this morning, mainly on higher coastal terrain, with visibility less than 1/4 mile possible. Clouds and fog will clear mid morning. An upper level trough off the coast will continue to push the monsoon moisture east today, shutting down our thunderstorm chances for the foreseeable future. Drying is already evident from the 00Z NKX sounding, with precipitable water values dropping to under an inch. With continued drying expected today, no thunderstorms are in the forecast this afternoon. However, there may be a few cumulus clouds over the mountains. High pressure will build into the Southwest through the middle of next week, bringing warmer temperatures to inland areas. Temperatures look to peak Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs of 112-116 for the lower deserts, 100-104 for the Inland Empire and High Desert, and upper 80s to mid 90s for the San Diego valleys and inland Orange County. The already shallow marine layer will be further compressed as heights rise this week. Coastal areas may see some patchy clouds and fog each night and morning, but widespread coverage of low clouds is not expected until later on in the week. With limited marine layer clouds and fog, high temperatures along the coast will warm a few degrees. Monsoonal moisture looks unlikely for at least the next week, as the position of the high pressure center keeps the moisture well to the east of SoCal. Ensembles show the high pressure weakening sometime late next week, with a trough developing over the West. This would help to rebuild the marine layer and bring cooler weather to the region. && .AVIATION... 011615Z...Coast/Valleys...Patchy low clouds and fog will be restricted to the beaches the rest of today with local BKN-OVC cigs around 500 feet with local vis below 3 miles. Otherwise, clear skies with unrestricted vis will prevail through early this evening. Only patchy low clouds and fog is expected late tonight with onset between 03Z and 08Z Mon and extending up to 5-10 miles inland, mainly in San Diego County, by 12Z Mon. Bases will be 300-600 ft MSL with tops to 700 ft MSL and local vis below 3 miles in fog. Clearing will likely occur by 16Z Mon in most locations. Mountains/Deserts...Mostly clear with unrestricted vis through Monday morning. && .MARINE... Patchy dense fog is possible again late tonight and early Monday morning with visbility less than 1 NM. Wind gusts approaching 20 knots are possible in the outer waters each afternoon through Wednesday. Otherwise, no hazardous marine conditions are expected through Friday. && .BEACHES...
