What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS San Diego, CA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Jul 7, 8:59 AM PDT, 4 hours 21 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jul 7, 8:59 AM PDT, 4 hours 21 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA
859 AM PDT Wed Jul 7 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Strong high pressure over the southwest states and Great Basin
will continue the warming trend into the weekend with excessive
heat for inland areas. The high will begin to weaken early next
week with a slow cooling trend into the middle of next week. The
marine layer will keep the coast cooler and the valleys not as hot
with areas of night and morning coastal low clouds and fog
reaching the western San Diego County valleys late each night.
Otherwise, there will be a few clouds over the mountains each
afternoon.

&&

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...

Low clouds which extended about 20 miles inland this morning are
beginning to clear inland with a few mid and high clouds moving
in from the southeast over the deserts. The 12Z KNKX sounding
shows a 12C marine inversion based near 1600 ft. The inversion is
a little stronger than yesterday morning, so expect slower
clearing near the coast.

The warming trend continues today for inland areas as the upper
level high centered near the Utah/Arizona/Nevada borders
strengthens. This high will shift slightly further east into
Thursday as it continues to strengthen, allowing for some more
mid- level moisture to move into Southern California, along with a
surge of low level moisture into the low deserts. This will
result in temperatures a few degrees lower in the low deserts, but
humidity will be much higher. Elsewhere will be a degree or two
warmer. Local hi-res guidance has trended a little higher with the
instability over the mountains, showing surface based CAPE of
around 200 J/kg over the Big Bear area thursday afternoon. There
is a weak inversion near 20,000 ft that could cap vertical
development. Southeast flow of 20-25 kt may result in towering cu
being sheared off or cells being pushed off surface convergence
boundaries and collapsing before growing sufficiently large for
showers/thunderstorms. Still an outside chance (<10%) of thunder,
though realistically we'll probably see isolated showers at best.

The high shifts back towards CA/NV Fri-Sun and strengthens
further, peaking Saturday somewhere in the 597-599 dm range,
though most directly overhead on Sunday. This will result in
continued warming through Sunday for the mountains and deserts.
For areas west of the mountains, the peak in the heat will likely
occur Thursday through Saturday, with a coastal eddy spreading
cooler air into the valleys on Sunday. High temperatures of 110+
are looking likely for portions of the high desert. NBM
probabilities of 110 or higher on Sunday, during the peak of the
heat, are around 70% for Victorville and areas north of there.
Probabilities are lower for the higher elevation foothill areas -
around 52% for Lucerne Valley and 30% for Hesperia. The low
deserts are still highly dependent on the low level moisture,
especially in the Coachella Valley. Parts of the San Diego County
are a little drier, so they may be closer to 117-120F for highs.
In the Coachella Valley it could range anywhere from around 112 to
120 this weekend, based off the NBM 10th and 90th percentile
temperatures. With any low level moisture the highs would be
closer to the 10th percentiles, and if the moisture mixes out
early in the afternoon they could easily get close to 120. There
is a 10-18% chance of low desert locations reaching or exceeding
120 degrees. An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect for the
high desert through Monday, and an Excessive Heat Watch for the
mountains below 6000 ft and low deserts for Saturday and Sunday.
The Inland Empire may also need a Heat Advisory at some point with
temperatures of around 100-108, though it will cool off nicely at
night with lows in the 60s.

The high weakens slightly Monday, then continues to weaken through
midweek, though it more or less remains over central and southern
CA. While there will be a gradual cooling trend, high temperatures
inland will remain above normal. Plenty of mid-level moisture will
be around, but out chances of thunderstorms will depend on the
placement of the upper high. The current overhead situation with a
southwest to northeast oriented ridge axis isn't really ideal, so
the forecast remains dry for now.

Night and morning low clouds will continue along the coast and
into the western valleys each night and morning, but may become
patchy at times depending on mid/high cloud cover.

&&

.AVIATION...
071515Z...Coast/Valleys...Low clouds with bases 1000-1300 ft MSL and
tops to 1600 ft MSL will continue to scatter out from east to west
through 17-18Z Wed. VFR conditions should prevail at all terminals
the remainder of the day. Some low clouds are expected to redevelop
along the coast after 04Z Thu, with slightly lower bases in the
range of 800-1200 ft MSL. Increasing high clouds above 15,000 ft,
combined with increasing high pressure aloft should result in
patchier coverage overall, with less inland penetration. These
factors may also disrupt the formation of clouds early on, so
confidence in timing of CIG onset is low for the coastal terminals.

Mountains/Deserts...SCT-BKN clouds at/above 15000 ft MSL through
Thursday.

.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Sunday.

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...
Low humidities, combined with gusty southwest to west winds of 15-25
MPH with gusts 35-40 MPH will result in elevated fire weather
conditions near the passes and on the desert slopes this afternoon.

There is a small chance for thunderstorms over the eastern San
Bernardino Mountains and San Jacinto Mountains Thursday
afternoon. Any thunderstorms that do develop could produce dry
lightning strikes and strong gusty winds. Isolated light showers
and brief gusty winds as cumulus clouds collapse are the more
likely scenario, with the chance of thunderstorms less than 10%.

The intense daytime heating and higher mixing heights of around
9,000-15,000 ft in the mountains and deserts Friday through
Sunday will increase the potential for plume-dominated fires each
day from late morning to early evening.

&&

.SKYWARN...
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are
encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
