Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service San Diego CA

.SYNOPSIS...
Building high pressure to the north will bring warming and drying
through the weekend. The marine layer will gradually become
shallower with night and morning low clouds and fog mostly
limited to coastal areas. High temperatures will warm through the
weekend. With high temperatures for inland areas of around 5 to 10
degrees by Sunday, there is the potential for excessive heat for
inland areas for Sunday and Monday. Some monsoonal moisture is
expected to gradually increase next week, bringing chances for
afternoon thunderstorms in the mountains and deserts.

.DISCUSSION...FOR EXTREME SOUTHWESTERN CALIFORNIA INCLUDING ORANGE...
SAN DIEGO...WESTERN RIVERSIDE AND SOUTHWESTERN SAN BERNARDINO
COUNTIES...
The marine layer rebounded rather nicely overnight after
yesterday's weak and temporary disruption from showers and
thunderstorms. The base of the weakened marine inversion is
around 1800 feet and the cloud deck is relatively thin. These
factors should lead to a relatively full clearing this morning.
Leftover moisture flecked the skies with altocumulus clouds this
morning, and a few cumulus might form over mountains today, but
other than that, fair and seasonal weather. A low pressure trough
along the CA coast will slowly weaken as a monster ridge of high
pressure builds over the Pacific Northwest this weekend. Actual
forecast temperatures for some spots like Portland on Sunday will
exceed highest all-time records. In SoCal the ridge is sandwiched
between lows over the ocean and the interior Southwest. So it is
weaker here, but will still give us a noticeable warming trend
this weekend. Low clouds and fog will continue nights and mornings
near the coast - not as far inland as today. Sunday and Monday
appear to be the hottest days inland under that building high
pressure. Ensemble/blended guidance has lower desert temps ranging
from 112 to 116 and high desert 102 to 110 those days, putting
the heat risk right on the cusp of a heat warning. Some spots will
exceed 100 in the Inland Empire. With the clockwise flow around
the ridge to our north, easterly flow will set up over SoCal next
week. Moisture increases gradually each day through about
Wednesday. Right now we have a slight chance of afternoon
thunderstorms over mountains/deserts starting Monday, but
increasing Tuesday and Wednesday. It might start backing off
Thursday and Friday, or simply continue. The added humidity and
clouds will trim temperatures a bit off the high end, but keep
them high on the low end. The thunderstorm potential will
fluctuate within a large range of time-space possibilites, but for
now they are confined to mountains/deserts and afternoons. The
marine layer will go more shallow and disrupted by the monsoon
flow, but probably hold its position in patchier form.

.AVIATION...
241500Z...Coast/Valleys...Stratus with bases 1500-1900 ft MSL and
tops to 2100 ft MSL will gradually clear inland/valleys areas 15-
17Z, with coastal areas likely seeing CIGS persist through 18-20Z at
least. Possibility of coastal terminals remaining BKN/OVC most of
the afternoon as well, with periods of clearing being most likely 20-
00Z. Low cloud coverage will begin to increase after 00Z, with bases
starting between 1200-1700 ft MSL. San Diego coastal terminals are
likely to have CIGS by 03Z, possibly earlier, with KSNA delayed by
~2-4 hours. Approximately 50% chance of CIGS at KONT 11-15Z Fri.
Mountains/Deserts...Scattered clouds at/above 10,000 ft MSL and
unrestricted vis through Fri afternoon. NW to W winds with surface
gusts 25-35 kt developing across the desert mountain slopes, below
the passes, and into the deserts after 21Z, weakening tonight. MOD
up/downdrafts possible over and E of the mountains.
&&
.MARINE...
No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Monday.
&&
.BEACHES...
A Beach Hazards Statement for Orange County remains in effect
through tonight. High tides around 7 feet combined with elevated
surf could produce minor beach erosion and tidal flooding. Large
tidal swings will lead to an increased risk of strong rip currents,
especially during outgoing tides. Tides and surf lower Friday.
&&
.FIRE WEATHER...
High pressure to the north will bring warming and drying through
the weekend with the marine layer becoming shallower after Friday.
Lowest daytime humidity in the deserts will fall to 10 to 15
percent today and around 10 percent for Friday through the
weekend. That low humidity combined with gusty southwest to west
winds in the mountains and deserts each afternoon and evening will
result in elevated fire weather conditions for the deserts onto
the desert slopes of the mountains each afternoon.
For the early and middle part of next week, monsoonal moisture
may begin to spread into the area with a gradual recovery in
humidity through mid week. This could also bring a chance for
thunderstorms, mainly for the mountains and deserts and mainly
during the afternoon and early evening each day. The potential for
dry lightning strikes would be greater initially with the moisture
more limited. The potential for wetting rainfall could then
increase depending on the amount of moisture influx.

.SKYWARN...
Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are
encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
