.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure will continue to build into California this holiday
weekend, bringing hot weather inland. The marine layer will
become shallower and less extensive, with limited clouds and fog
confined mainly to coastal areas each night and morning.
Monsoonal thunderstorm chances return by the middle of next week ahead
of a developing West Coast trough and cooling trend late next
week. A south swell will arrive at our beaches this weekend,
elevating surf, and creating dangerous swimming conditions.

Evening Update:
It was a very warm day today across the area! Even near the coast
temperatures were very warm...for example Fullerton hit 100. For
Sunday temperatures will be very similar except a few degrees
hotter for inland areas, and perhaps a few degrees cooler near the
immediate coast, as the coastal gradient increases and may trigger a
seabreeze and Catalina eddy late in the day. Anyway, the heat
headlines continue in effect for the Inland Empire and the High
Desert, otherwise no updates were needed this evening.
Earlier discussion from 1 PM:
At 1 PM, skies were mostly clear across SoCal. The heat is on this
afternoon for inland areas, with temperatures running around 5 to 12
degrees warmer than this time yesterday. Patchy low clouds will
return tonight, though coverage will be limited and confined to
coastal areas. Patchy fog is also possible on higher coastal
terrain, with reduced visibility below 1 mile at times.
High pressure will continue to build over California this weekend,
peaking at 594 DM Sunday and Monday over central California. The
building high will weaken onshore flow, resulting in hot weather for
inland areas. The heat will peak for the Inland Empire and the lower
deserts Sunday and Monday, while the peak of the heat for the High
Desert will be Monday and Tuesday.
Highs in the Inland Empire will be around 100-105 degrees through
Monday, though some of the hotter locations could be a couple of
degrees higher. The lower deserts will top out around 108-112
degrees this weekend. Overall, coastal areas and the San Diego
valleys should largely escape the heat, though today will be the
warmest day for those areas as it appears a coastal eddy will
develop for Sunday, lowering temperatures a couple of degrees.
Temperatures in the low to mid 90s are expected today for inland
Orange County and the San Diego valleys, before a gradual cooling
trend sets in Sunday through much of next week. Temperatures in the
High Desert will peak on Monday and Tuesday as the high pressure
begins to drift to the north and east. Highs there on Monday and
Tuesday will top out around 100-105 degrees. A high to locally very
high heat risk is expected in the High Desert Monday and Tuesday.
A Heat Advisory remains in effect for the Inland Empire through
Monday, and an Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for the High Desert
Monday and Tuesday. Be sure to take precautions if you plan to be
outside in the heat this holiday weekend.
The high pressure will shift east into the Great Basin on Tuesday,
putting SoCal into a good position to welcome monsoon moisture back
into the region mid to late next week. Thunderstorms return to the
forecast for the mountains and deserts around Wednesday next week
and will continue through Friday. Currently, Thursday looks to have
the best chance for thunderstorms over the mountains and deserts,
and easterly flow aloft could push some storms into the valleys on
Thursday. There is still some uncertainty this far out with timing
and extent of the thunderstorms, but we will keep an eye on the
trends in the coming days.
For next weekend, a trough may develop off the West Coast, which
would bring stronger onshore flow, a deeper marine layer, and cooler
temperatures back to SoCal.

.AVIATION...
050400Z...Mostly clear skies with mostly unrestricted vis will
prevail through Sunday evening. There is a small chance of very low
stratus/fog near the immediate coast with bases below 500 feet MSL
and vis below 3 miles 12Z-17Z Sun, but stratus/fog is unlikely to
impact any airports. More organized stratus could form Sunday night
near the coast.

No hazardous marine conditions are expected through Thursday.

.BEACHES...
A 2-3 ft south southwest swell from 190 degrees with a period of 18
seconds was beginning to appear at coastal buoys this evening. The
swell will continue with a gradually declining period between 16-18
seconds through Monday. This swell will generate surf of 3 to 5 feet
with sets to 6 ft at Orange County beaches Sunday and Monday, with
mostly 3 to 4 feet with local sets to 5 feet in San Diego County.
There will be a high rip current risk Sunday and Monday. See the
Beach Hazards Statement for more information. Swell and surf will
subside Tuesday.

.FIRE WEATHER...
The building heat, combined with very low afternoon minimum
humidity (around 10 percent) and high mixing levels will elevate
the plume dominated wildfire danger this holiday weekend. Other
than some breezy diurnal winds each afternoon, mainly near the
passes, winds should not be a major threat.

Skywarn activation is not requested. However weather spotters are
encouraged to report significant weather conditions.
