What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter weather advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Springfield, MO wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter weather advisory went out at Feb 13, 3:34 AM CST, 26 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Feb 13, 3:34 AM CST, 26 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Springfield MO
334 AM CST Sat Feb 13 2021

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 330 AM CST Sat Feb 13 2021

Unseasonable cold will continue for several days with a large
cold air mass over the Midwest and Plains. Will run a continuous
wind chill advisory tonight through Monday night given the
expected cold/wind chills. Daytime recovery temperature-wise on
these days will be minimal.

.LONG TERM...(Sunday through Friday)
Issued at 330 AM CST Sat Feb 13 2021

Sunday/Monday: A strong shortwave will move onshore over the
Pacific NW and northern CA early today then dig southeast into
the southwest U.S.. A lead impulse will move east into the Plains
Sunday/Sunday evening followed by the stronger main wave that will
swing through the southern Plains Monday. Still some wiggle room
on the forecast, especially with the second wave which is showing
some guidance tendency to dig farther south. Snow will gradually
spread west to east over our area late tonight and Sunday. There
may be a brief lull at some point Sunday night before the next
wave goes through Monday. With fairly high snow-liquid ratios
("dry snow") will see some accumulation despite fairly meager qpf.
Grids have a general 4-5 inches for a two day total. Have enough
confidence to go with a winter weather advisory for Sunday-Sunday
night-Monday. I'm sure there will be adjustments with updated
guidance.

Tuesday-Wednesday: Tuesday will be cold, but with a weak upper
ridge moving in, will see a "warming trend" with highs in the
teens, maybe touching 20 in some areas. If snow cover is in place,
this may be optimistic. Another system will follow a similar path
to Monday's system brining a chance for snow late Tuesday night
into Wednesday. The sfc low and deeper moisture may end up being
farther south. Will monitor the forecast track for this next
system. Confidence right now is low.

Thursday-Friday: There is a persistent signal for a warming trend
as a pattern change finally shoves the cold air mass off to the
east. Ensemble guidance beyond this period into the next week
shows a strong signal for near or above normal temperatures.

.AVIATION...(For the 06Z TAFS through 06Z Saturday night)
Issued at 1119 PM CST Fri Feb 12 2021

An expanse of cloud cover will persist from tonight through much
of today. KSGF/KJLN will have VFR ceilings until cloud cover
lowers back to MVFR late tonight through the morning. KBBG will
remain in MVFR ceilings through the morning. Periodic flurries or
very light snow will likely linger through the morning hours. Some
breaks in the cloud cover are possible during the afternoon and
evening, with slightly drier near surface air and subtle daytime
mixing raising ceilings back into VFR. Lower ceilings return
tomorrow night as the next winter system approaches the Missouri
Ozarks from the west.

North winds will persist throughout the TAF period.

This Hazardous Weather Outlook is for portions of the Missouri
Ozarks and extreme southeast Kansas.

.DAY ONE...Tonight.

Weather hazards expected...

  Elevated excessive cold risk.
  Limited snow risk.

DISCUSSION...

Very light snow and flurries will continue at times through
tonight and into tomorrow morning. A dusting of snow will be
possible with minor road impacts possible where roads are
untreated, mainly secondary and less traveled roads.

Wind chills will fall into the 5 to 20 below zero range tonight.
Prolonged exposure to the cold could cause damage to exposed skin
in 30 minutes or less.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...Saturday through Thursday.

Bitter cold is expected into early next week. The coldest period
will likely be Saturday night through Monday night with low
temperatures in the single digits above and below zero. Wind
chills from 10 to 20 below zero will be common, especially during
the late night and early morning hours.

Light snow or flurries will be possible Saturday morning. No
impacts are expected.

Periods of snow can then be expected from late Saturday night
into Monday evening. Storm total amounts of 3 to 6 inches are
expected which will create travel impacts.

Light snow is possible again around the middle of next week,
however this system does not look nearly as impactful.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation will not be needed through tonight.
