Area Forecast Discussion...UPDATED
National Weather Service Springfield MO
1234 PM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021

...18Z AVIATION UPDATE...

.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 243 AM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021

The Ozarks will continue to see a warming trend today as
southwesterly upper level flow and retreating surface high
pressure bring warm and moist air into the region. With an upper
level ridge now over the area, temperatures will climb into the
upper 80s to lower 90s.

Southerly winds will develop as the surface high moves north of
the area. A short wave, noted in the synoptic models, may bring
some showers or an isolated rumble of thunder to parts of far
southwestern Missouri and along the Arkansas state line into this
afternoon, but overall chances remain around 20 percent of less.

The overall synoptic pattern will remain through tonight with
overnight lows only falling into the 70s for most of the area.
With lingering moisture and wet ground some patchy for may occur
mainly south of I-44.

.LONG TERM...(Monday through Saturday)
Issued at 243 AM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021

The upper level ridge will dominate the regions weather for much
of the coming week with high temperatures in the lower to middle
90s across the region each day. With moisture remaining across the
region and dewpoints in the 70s, heat index values from 100 to
106 will be possible each day.

With surface low pressure developing in the plains through the
first part of the week, breezy surface winds may develop across
mainly the western half of the region. Winds on Monday and Tuesday
afternoons may gust to 20mph a times.

Little in the way of rain chances are expected from Monday night
through Thursday. There is a weak wave that may bring some
showers to the eastern Ozarks Monday afternoon, though confidence
is low with this feature, thus have kept rain chances around 20
percent or less. With the ridge essentially overhead, temperatures
in the 90s and dewpoints in the 70s, heat indexes will likely be
in the 100 to 106 range from Monday through Thursday. Will likely
need heat headlines as a result but will hold off on this until we
see the latest models to get a better idea on the extent of the
potential heat.

Models are indicating that the upper level ridge will shift tot he
east by weeks end leaving the Ozarks under southwesterly flow
aloft and brining, slightly cooler temperatures and slight
chances for showers for the weekend, but this will need to be
watched as we head through the week for any changes.

&&

.AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Monday afternoon)
Issued at 1233 PM CDT Sun Aug 22 2021

VFR conditions are expected at the TAF sites through the period.
Afternoon cumulus will dissipate shortly after sunset. Can not
rule out an isolated shower or storm at SGF or BBG this afternoon
or evening however the chances are too low to include in the TAF.
Winds will be light and variable through the period, eventually
becoming more southerly for Monday.
