The stretch of hot and humid days across the Ozarks rolls on this
afternoon and early evening, with high temperatures in the mid
to upper-90s and heat indices of 100-110 expected. The combination
of surface high pressure across northwest Arkansas along with an
upper-level ridge overhead should keep precipitation chances at
bay today.
A cold front across northern MO/western IL looks to slowly
approach the region into early Friday morning. A few
showers/storms are possible across the far northern portions of
the CWA early Friday morning, though coverage is expected to
remain limited. Lightning and a wind gust of 30-40 mph may be
possible with a stronger storm. Otherwise, muggy conditions will
continue overnight, with lows in the mid-70s and high humidity.
Heat headlines continue into Friday, with mid to upper-90s
highs/heat indices of 100-110 anticipated. It should be noted
that Benton County was added to the Excessive Heat Warning. Far
northeastern portions of the CWA may run slightly cooler (low-
90s) behind a cold front that is expected to slowly translate
south/southwestward, eventually becoming quasi-stationary, across
portions of southwest Missouri later Friday.
This feature may provide enough surface convergence/lift for an
isolated thunderstorm or two from the late afternoon into Friday
evening. Despite most guidance depicting a rather robust
instability axis developing in the vicinity of the front, deep
layer shear looks marginal for sustained severe convection.
Lightning, brief heavy rainfall and a wind gust to 30-40 mph would
be possible with the stronger storms tomorrow.
.LONG TERM...(Friday Night through Thursday)

Saturday is shaping up to be a rather complex forecast as far as
heat headlines go, with the quasi-stationary front expected to
linger across portions of the northern/central CWA. Potential also
exists for a decaying complex of storms to move across the
northern/eastern extents of the CWA through midday Saturday.
Locations south of the quasi-stationary front are expected to once
again warm rather appreciably (into the mid-90s) with heat
indices potentially warranting continued heat headlines.
Temperatures in the upper-80s are expected where precipitation
and extensive cloud cover lingers into the afternoon. These
"cooler" temperatures are most likely across portions of the far
northern and eastern CWA Saturday afternoon/early evening. Heat
headlines may ultimately be continued for portions of the CWA
(mainly west and south), but confidence in frontal placement
remains low at this time.
Shower and storm coverage is likely to expand across the CWA Saturday
evening, with many locations seeing showers/storms by late Saturday
night. The boundary layer south of the front is expected to be rather
moist and unstable. Combined with at least modest deep layer
shear magnitudes (25-35 kts), a few strong to potentially severe
storms will be possible. The main convective hazards look to be
lightning and few damaging wind gusts. Will need to also monitor
the flash flooding potential across portions of the Missouri
Ozarks, as storms will be moving rather slowly and may train
across some locations.
The passage of the cold front will bring welcome relief to the area
early next week, with most guidance indicating daily highs in the low
to mid-80s for much of the area. Potential will exist for typical
spotty summertime convection beginning on Tuesday. Ensemble guidance
also shows the western CONUS ridge beginning to build back across the
central Plains into late next week. With 850 mb temperatures ranging
from 18-22C across the area, daily highs in the upper-80s to low-90s
would be possible.
