Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Springfield MO
624 AM CDT Wed Jul 28 2021
.SHORT TERM...(Today and tonight)
Issued at 251 AM CDT Wed Jul 28 2021
The upper level ridge and summer time surface high pressure over
the region will keep the heat on for today and into tonight.
With the combination of daytime highs in the middle to upper 90s
and dew points in the 70s, heat index values will be in the
100-108 range.
With the warm dew points continuing overnight, it will be another
warm night with slightly cooler temperatures possible in river
valleys.
.LONG TERM...(Thursday through Tuesday)
Issued at 251 AM CDT Wed Jul 28 2021
The heat will continue Thursday and possibly into Friday. A heat
Advisory is in effect for the Ozarks for Thursday with heat index
values in the 101 to 108 range likely.
For Friday, the potential for additional heat headlines will be
contingent on a front that will try to make its way into the area
Friday afternoon. With the upper ridge retreating to the west a
bit and northwest flow aloft, will need to watch how far to the
southwest the front can advance. It may be possible that a heat
advisory may be needed for portions of southwestern Missouri,
which may remain in the warm sector ahead of the front.
For the weekend, the front is expected to push south into the
Ozarks on Saturday with showers and thunderstorms possible for
central and southeastern Missouri and then make its way though
the area on Sunday. Precipitation will then spread across most of
the area Sunday.
For the start of next week, slightly cooler air will filter into
the area behind the front as northwest flow aloft continues and
the upper ridge remains west of the area. This will bring a
welcome break from the heat for the Ozarks with high in the
middle 80s.
