Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
351 AM PST Fri Feb 12 2021
.SYNOPSIS...Wintry weather will continue across western Washington
today and into the weekend. The second and likely more impactful
system will be arriving and providing additional snowfall today
through much of Saturday. Temperatures look to rebound closer to
normal early next week, but conditions overall will likely remain
unsettled.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...A glance at radar early this
morning shows light snow showers impacting western Washington,
primarily from Tacoma southward. Light snow showers can be
expected through the morning hours before picking up by the late
afternoon hours. It is likely that the heaviest showers and period
that will experience the most accumulating snow will be overnight
tonight into Saturday. A gradual tapering of the snow showers
will occur Saturday afternoon.
Areas in the south Sound and in the Southwest Interior that
received accumulating snow Thursday night will add to the totals
overnight into Saturday. These areas could receive between 6-8
inches in additional snow, with locally higher amounts in the
Cascades of Pierce and Lewis Counties receiving between 8-12
inches. The Olympic Peninsula may potentially receive 6-8 inches
from this weekend's system as well. As for the Seattle Metro area,
4-6 inches are possible, with some localized variations possible.
Winter Storm Warnings will go into effect for the lowlands
beginning tonight through Saturday morning.
Easterly winds are still anticipated to kick up a notch beginning
late Friday into early Saturday morning. As has been messaged
previously, these winds present a challenge to snowfall as they
warm and dry the air on the way down from the Cascade crest. Heavy
snow showers and the easterly winds will be working against
themselves to some extent and may limit some of the accumulations
east of I-5 and I-405 through the metro area. Stay tuned to
forecast updates during the event as the situation evolves. As for
Sunday, some lingering snow showers are possible as the cold air
remains in the area. Additionally significant accumulations are
not likely to occur heading into Sunday.
.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...Temperatures will be
rebounding closer to normal, although likely still below average,
through early next week. Highs returning to the mid to upper 40s
are possible though the middle of the week. The pattern at large
looks to remain fairly unsettled, as hints of the next system
arriving Monday morning are present in the models. Details will be
refined through the weekend regarding the potential for more
precipitation and what type it may be. At this time, there is
potential for successive weather systems to move through the area
through the rest of the week.
