.SYNOPSIS...A strong spring system will move across the area Sunday
with gusty winds, lowland rain, mountain snow, and isolated
thunderstorms. Dry weather returns later Monday through much of the
work week with the possibility of additional systems by the end of
the week.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...High pressure across the
West Coast will dampen tonight ahead of a strong frontal system that
will move across the area Sunday into early Monday. Forecast remains
largely on track with a few minor tweaks to the details this
afternoon. Precipitation shield will approach the area late tonight
and spread inland during the day Sunday with a strong cold front
moving across during the late morning to afternoon hours. Will
likely see the development of a Puget Sound Convergence Zone behind
the front across portions of Snohomish and King counties. Overall,
lowland rain amounts won't be too heavy although could see some
heavy downpours in the CZ. Several hazards expected with this system
in the form of gusty winds, heavy mountain snow, and isolated
thunderstorms through the day Sunday before things wind down Sunday
night into Monday morning.
1. Winds: Southerly winds will increase Sunday morning ahead of the
cold front, increasing as the front moves through during the day,
and then turning more westerly behind the front. A westerly surge
down the Strait of Juan de Fuca is expected post front. While gusty
winds are expected area-wide, the strongest winds will be in the
normal spots - along the coast, through the Strait of JDF, and
into the northern inland waters and western Whatcom/Skagit
counties. Will likely also see a burst of gusty winds through
Island County into western Snohomish depending on where the
convergence zone forms. A wind advisory has been issued for the
coast, Strait and interior from Tacoma northward. Gusts of 30 - 45
mph will be common with a few spots reaching 50 mph. Elsewhere,
expect gusts on the order of 20-40 mph. Winds gradually begin to
ease Sunday night into Monday morning.
2. Mountain Snow: Snow levels will start out around 3000-4000 feet
at onset of precipitation and steadily drop through the day,
plummeting behind the cold front as much colder air moves in. Heavy
snow is expected for the Cascade passes on the order of 8 to 12
inches, with slightly higher amounts expected at Stevens Pass.
Depending on where the convergence zone sets up, could see locally
enhanced amounts. Gusty winds will also affect the mountains. Have
issued winter storm warning for the North Cascades where heaviest
amounts are expected and continued winter weather advisory for the
central and south Cascades. Those with travel plans into the
Cascades should keep an eye on conditions and check WSDOT road
reports before departing. Snow will gradually wind down Sunday night
through light showers may linger into Monday. As snow winds down,
snow levels will fall to around 500-1000 feet. Not much moisture
will be left at this point but could see a few flakes flying on
higher hills. Accumulations not expected but do have rain/snow
mention in the forecast.
3. Thunderstorms: Post-frontal environment may be slightly
favorable for the development of isolated thunderstorms with any
convective showers that pop up. Have expanded mention in the
forecast to include the entire coast, Strait, and into the
interior across western Skagit and Snohomish counties where a more
robust PCSZ development. Instability may be just enough for a few
strikes. Any thunderstorm that forms will be capable of small
hail, heavy downpours, and gusty winds. Details will continue to
be refined as more hi-res guidance becomes available.
Conditions quiet down Monday as system exits the region with just a
few lingering showers, mainly over the Cascades. High pressure then
rebuilds over the area for a quiet Tuesday with dry weather and
warming temperatures.

.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...High pressure remains in
control through early Wednesday. Temperatures on Wednesday will warm
to the mid to upper 50s with a few spots likely nearing the 60
degree mark with some sunshine. Ridge then likely breaks down for
later Thursday into next weekend with additional systems and
slightly cooler temperatures. Nothing looks too strong at this point
but will continue to monitor. Ensemble solutions don't exactly agree
on strength of systems or amplitude of resulting ridge breakdown.

.AVIATION...High pressure will quickly give way to a vigorous front
on Sunday. After some sunshine this afternoon for many areas clouds
will increase overnight and rain will develop quickly Sunday morning
as the cold front arrives. Expect the mountains to be obscured
Sunday and Sunday night and from about mid morning to mid afternoon
there are likely to be some areas of MVFR cigs and somewhat low vsby
in rain with the front--turning to showers with the frontal passage
in the afternoon. Wind will be blustery with southerlies turning to
westerly winds for the afternoon. 19
KSEA...Clouds increase tonight and Sunday morning ahead of the next
front. Blustery southerlies develop Sunday morning then peak in the
afternoon as they turn to more southwesterly behind the front. A
PSCZ will develop Sunday evening.

.MARINE...Southerly winds will increase Sunday as a vigorous frontal
system reaches Western Washington. There will be a strong cold
frontal passage in the early afternoon and gale warnings are up for
this system for all waters--there is a good chance that the westerlies
will be stronger than the southerlies for most of the marine areas
and especially the coastal waters, Strait of Juan de Fuca, and
Strait of Georgia--with winds peaking Sunday evening. The strong NW
flow Sunday night will ease Monday and high pressure will build back
in over the region through Wednesday. A weak front might arrive
Thursday. 19
