Area Forecast Discussion

.SYNOPSIS...Dry weather today as an upper ridge slides east of the
area. A series of weather systems will move through the area
Thursday through the weekend for rounds of rain and mountain snow.
Breezy winds on Friday with the trough over the area.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY/...High clouds with some
breaks present over W WA this afternoon as temperatures are
generally in the mid-50s. Dry conditions persist as the area remains
on the back side of an exiting ridge.

Next weather system of concern remains a front ahead of an upper
level trough which will start to impact the area Thursday as the
front hits the coast then spreads inland during the afternoon. Rain
and breezy conditions the primary concern with the front, however as
the trough makes its way into the state Friday, looking for winds to
pick up a little bit more with breezy to windy conditions over the
CWA. The usually preferred areas for winds /the coast and North
interior/ look to be borderline with regards to potential for
headlines but at this time, current solutions do not really make
much of a strong case for such wind speeds and as such will go with
inherited forecast keeping them just below advisory thresholds. The
more interesting aspect to key in on for Friday will be an influx of
instability. SPC convective outlook places the entire state of WA in
a general threat for thunderstorms, but this is potentially overdone
given most recent model guidance as neither CAPE nor LI values look
terribly convincing. That being said, did inherit slight chance T
along the coast and over the coastal waters and given that will be
where the best instability will be present /although still not
terribly impressive/...feel like the best play is to leave inherited
forecast alone in this regard as it does match with forecast
expectations...a slight, non-zero but still pretty low, chance.

The trough finally makes its exit during the day Saturday with some
showers lingering over W WA. Activity looks to diminish throughout
the day, but sufficient moisture lingers to keep PoPs in the
forecast.  18

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Next frontal system wastes
no time getting into W WA for Sunday bringing another round of
precip and the accompanying upper trough will allow precip to
stretch into Monday. Deterministic models show an upper level ridge
moving into the area Tuesday although there is some disagreement as
to whether or not this feature will be able to scour out lingering
moisture...the ECMWF votes yes, the GFS not so much. Ensembles
leaning more dry than wet, but still retain slight chance to low end
chance PoPs for this time frame. Yet another frontal system expected
for Wednesday, but enough disagreement in the details to keep
confidence and PoPs low.  18

.AVIATION...Clouds are continuing to move into the Western
Washington area today, and we are expecting a gradual lowering of
ceilings. At this moment it looks like conditions will remain in VFR
for the next 36 hours. Southerly flow aloft is expected to remain in
place for the next few days as well. Looking at the surface wind
conditions as of 2000 UTC it is mostly calm throughout the area,
however it is expected that winds will be picking up slightly during
the overnight hours, with this ramp up their may be some variability
in the direction. But we expect by Thursday morning for the area
terminals to be settled in a southerly flow pattern at 7-10 knots.
Locations such as KBLI, KPAE, KPWT, and KHQM will likely see
slightly higher sustained winds averaging between 10 and 15 knots
with gusts possible. Rain will also be moving into the area during
the late morning/early afternoon. As is usually the case the rain
will begin near the coastal terminals such as KHQM before moving
inland. Right towards the end of the aviation forecast period we
begin to see an increase chance of thunderstorms. These storms will
be scattered in nature, but the most likely location for occurrence
will be near the coast.

KSEA...Clouds will continue to move in throughout the afternoon and
into tonight. Conditions are expected to remain in VFR. Winds will
gradually be increasing during the overnight, during the initial
increase direction could be variable. We expect by 1500 UTC winds
will be consistently from the south/southeast. Chance of light rain
increases towards the end of the period.

.MARINE...The area of high pressure that has been keeping the area
waters relatively tranquil will be pushed out tonight. Southerly
winds are expected to begin to increase during the overnight,
especially over the coastal waters. Winds over the coastal waters
will initially pick up to small craft advisory level, but the outer
coastal waters are expected to increase to gale strength by the
early morning hours. During this time west/southwest swells will be
increasing to around 10 feet. With the low staying situated off
shore we expect a secondary push of both winds and swells on Friday.
This second push of energy is expected to be stronger with gale
force winds for the outer and inner coastal waters. Swells will also
be increasing to around 15 feet. The period during both the initial
and secondary pushes will stay between 10 and 12 seconds.

The situation for in inland waters is a little bit more complicated.
While the most recent model runs have made the winds from the
initial surge of energy come down over the coastal waters, winds
over the East Entrance and Northern Interior have remained roughly
the same. We are confident that at small craft level winds will
occur in these two areas Thursday morning, but the potential for
gales is still there. Because the models have been trending it down
we will hold off on any upgrades for the interior water headlines.
With that second push of energy on Friday it is likely that all the
interior waters have some kind of headline. As of this afternoon's
forecast run it is looking like gales are likely for the East
Entrance and the Northern Interior Waters, with small crafts
elsewhere.

Conditions for all the area waters are expected to gradually ease
over the weekend.
