Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 903 AM PDT Tue Mar 16 2021 .SYNOPSIS...Dry weather through Wednesday with an upper ridge building into the Pacific Northwest. Temperatures will gradually warm through Wednesday. A series of weather systems will move through the area Thursday through the weekend for rounds of rain and mountain snow. && .SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...Mostly clear skies for the majority of W WA this morning with the exception of some lingering fog in the SW interior /along the Chehalis river valley in W Lewis County/ and some clouds over the Cascades. In both instances, skies are expected to clear by this afternoon. Still a little brisk out there after a cold start with obs at the time of this writing still ranging from the mid 20s to the mid 30s...with SeaTac coming in the warmest at 36. With plenty of sunshine on tap for today though, inherited forecast highs in the upper 40s to lower 50s looks to remain on track. Upper level ridging persists into Wednesday, which will give rise to yet another chilly overnight period and morning, but will also bring the warmest temps of the week as highs are expected to climb into the 50s with locations within the Seattle Metro and points south possibly butting up against 60 degrees. The next front will move into the area late Wednesday night and slide northeast through Thursday. Rain for the lowlands on Thursday with mountain snow. Snow levels on Thursday from 4500 to 5000 feet will drop to 3000 to 4000 feet Thursday night. Breezy southerlies on Thursday, especially for the coast, and areas of the San Juan Islands, Admiralty Inlet, and western Whatcom/Skagit Counties. Temperatures on Thursday in the low to mid 50s. 18/JD .LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...From Previous Discussion...The upper trough will be over the Pacific Northwest into the weekend for a cooler and showery weather pattern. Friday may feature breezy weather with an area of low pressure offshore. In addition, Friday will have to be monitored for the potential of any thunderstorms, though most guidance currently has limited instability for the area. Ensembles suggest another trough will slide towards the area on Monday for another round of precipitation. Temperatures will be a tad cooler than normal through the weekend with the upper trough over the area. JD && .AVIATION...High pressure will build into the area today and remain on Tuesday. Northerly flow aloft will become more west/southwest today. Stratus deck remains banked up against the Cascades this morning and extends westward toward eastern portions of the Sound with ceilings in the 3000-5000 foot range. Elsewhere clear skies rule and will continue through the day with just a few high clouds. VFR conditions will be present through the TAF period. The exception may be a few patchy areas of fog/freezing fog around the Sound this morning but with temperatures well below freezing in some locations, it may just frost out, minimizing fog coverage. As of 0800 AM this patchy fog is still lingering around some areas this morning but is still expected to dissipate with more daytime heating. Light surface winds will continue.
