Area forecast discussion, Mar 12, 9:34 AM PST, 4 hours 54 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 934 AM PST Fri Mar 12 2021 .UPDATE...Another mostly sunny and dry day on tap for Western Washington today, with afternoon highs near 50 expected along the coast and mid 50s for the interior. No major changes were needed to the morning forecast package. The previous discussion follows below, with updates made to the aviation and marine sections. 14 && .SYNOPSIS...An upper ridge will allow for continued dry weather through Saturday. An incoming front will bring some rain on Sunday followed by an upper trough on Monday resulting in lingering showers. High pressure aloft will bring a return to dry weather Tuesday and Wednesday. && .SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...Pretty quiet early morning over W WA with radar looking clear. Current satellite shows some high clouds over the northern portions of the CWA, reaching down into the northern portions of southern Snohomish county and the northern half of the Olympic Peninsula at the time of this writing. As clear skies would dictate, today is certainly off to a chilly start with temps ranging in the upper 20s to lower 30s. Another day under the ridge will allow for plenty of sunshine today and high temps getting just a little bit above what they would typically be this time of year as most lowland locations /except for the coast/ will see highs in the mid 50s. Coastal locations will be a little cooler in the lower 50s. More of the same can be expected for Saturday because even though the main ridge axis will be east of the area, the feature will remain in the drivers seat for W WA as dry conditions persist and daytime temps warming further to near 60 for the interior lowlands. Models remain on track for the next frontal system to reach the coast by late morning Sunday and pushing inland through the afternoon, bringing a return of rainfall to the area for most of the afternoon and into the evening before starting to taper off overnight. As one would expect, temps will take a bit of a hit with highs generally in the lower 50s. 18 .LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...The parent upper level low will follow hot on the heels of the front, allowing for showers to persist into Monday, but this system dives south forcing activity to pretty much wrap up by Monday afternoon and dry conditions to resume. Deterministic models seem to have fallen in line with each other and agree that a ridge will then build into the area causing dry conditions to resume Tuesday into Wednesday. Beyond this, models both deterministic and ensembles remain all over the place with solutions...some wet, some dry but ultimately all of them resulting in low confidence for the end of the forecast period. There does look to be an upper level low and associated front that should push into the area for late next week for another round of rainfall, but that is about as far as one can go with it at this time. 18 && .AVIATION...High pressure and offshore flow will lead to dry and stable weather across western Washington today. The flow aloft is north-northwest. Patchy low clouds are over the south sound and lower Chehalis valley this morning, which will burn off by the afternoon. Elsewhere, expect VFR conditions today with mainly high clouds over the region. 33 KSEA...VFR today. South wind around 5 kt becoming northerly this afternoon. 33 && .MARINE...Light offshore flow over the waters today. On Saturday, winds will begin to pick up ahead of a frontal system with gales possible over the Coastal Waters and Eastern Strait of Juan de Fuca Saturday night. Post-frontal onshore flow will prevail on Sunday with gales possible through the strait. Expect increasing seas Sunday night, ranging from 10 to 13 feet. Quiet marine conditions look to return Tuesday and Wednesday, with the next frontal system expected Thursday, likely bringing the next round of Small Craft Advisory winds to some of the waters. 33 && .HYDROLOGY...River flooding is unlikely for the next 7 days. && .SEW WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... WA...None. PZ...None. && www.weather.gov/seattle
