Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
315 PM PST Thu Mar 4 2021
.SYNOPSIS...A slow moving frontal system just off the coast will
move slowly inland through Friday. An upper level trough will move
through the region Friday night and Saturday morning. Another
weather system arrives Sunday. An upper level trough will remain
just offshore during the first half of next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...Rainy weather on tap
as the front stalls near the coast tonight. The upper level trough
just off the West Coast will send out a second frontal wave that
will arrive Friday. The cold front will finally shift through the
interior of Western Washington later on Friday and the precip will
turn more showery. There's a Winter weather advisory for the
Olympics with snow at the higher elevations and with a decent amount
of rain in the lower elevations in southerly flow aloft. A flood
watch is up for the Skokomish River in Mason county. After the front
moves through, the air will destabilize for a chance of a couple of
thunderstorms near the coast, and the upper trough will shift ashore
on Saturday with showery weather over the weekend at times through
Saturday and the chance for another frontal system Sunday. 19
.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...It looks like an upper trough
will be a fixture for the weather along the West Coast into next
week. No doubt there will be showery periods, but also some
sunbreaks at times. The air mass will be a bit cool and the snow
level relatively low. The 6-10 day outlook is showing that about the
western third of the country is likely to be cool--but especially as
you go south toward southern California. Precipitation ranges from
favoring somewhat drier than normal conditions across Washington
State, to wetter conditions favored for the southern half of
California. So, it would seem that weather systems are likely to be
splitting with most of the action going in to the south of WA. 19
&&
.AVIATION...Southwesterly flow will persist aloft as an upper
level trough digs into the northeastern Pacific and becomes the
dominant influence across the Pacific Northwest. Radar this
afternoon shows that the rain ahead of the frontal system has
already made its way into the Sound at this hour. Expect periods
of rain to continue for area terminals as the frontal system
slowly progresses through the region through Friday. Ceilings and
visibilities at area TAF sites are mainly a mix of MVFR and VFR
this afternoon and expect that trend to continue into Friday, with
lower cigs and visibilities possible in areas of heavier rain.
Gusty conditions persist as well this afternoon, mainly for
terminals along the coast (KHQM) and across the Northern Interior
(KPAE,KBLI). Elsewhere, southerly surface winds primarily at 8-13
kts expected, shifting more southeasterly tonight.
KSEA...Southerly winds this afternoon, generally between 7-13
knots. Rain to continue into Friday. Conditions currently VFR,
becoming MVFR in any heavier showers. 14
&&
.MARINE...A vigorous cold front will slowly move through the area
waters through Friday. Gales will continue for the coastal waters
through Friday night, with brief lulls in the winds at times.
Gusty winds will persist across portions of the Eastern Strait and
Northern Interior waters as well through Friday as the frontal
system makes its way through the region.
Meanwhile, offshore swells will continue to build this evening and
remain elevated, primarily between 13-18 feet, into early Friday
morning before briefly subsiding ahead of another swell train
expected to arrive overnight into Saturday.
A number of marine headlines are posted for area waters today and
into Friday evening, including offshore gale warnings and Small
Craft Advisories for much of the inland waters. In addition, a
gale watch is in effect for the Northern Inland waters and the
Eastern Strait for Friday as the front moves through the area.
Additional marine headlines are likely Sunday into early next week
as the unsettled pattern continues. 14
&&
.HYDROLOGY...Stalling front will keep rain focused in the Olympics in
southerly flow aloft (with snow higher elevations). With 2-3" of rain
for the Skokomish basin, a flood watch is up for that river.
