.SYNOPSIS...Much talked about atmospheric river (AR) is on the
move south Sunday evening and will continue to impact Western
Washington with rain and mountain snow through Monday. A strong
rain shadow effect will be keeping the greater Puget Sound area
out of the bulk of the rain. The river will sag south of the area
by Monday night. Another system embedded in the northwesterly
flow aloft move through Tuesday. wednesday looks like a break in
the action before more systems reach the area later in the week.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Some small changes to
the forecast tonight. The rain forecast remains on track with the
satellite imagery showing the atmospheric river starting to move
south with heavier precipitation on the radar moving into the
North Coast/Olympic Peninsula. The river will slowly move south
through the area Monday.
Will update the forecast to increase the winds in the Everett and
Admiralty Inlet zones tonight and issue a wind advisory for these
locations. Windy for the remainder of the forecast area overnight
into Monday morning.
Snow levels rising tonight into Monday peaking in the 4500-5000
foot range before lowering again Monday night back down below pass
levels to around 2000 feet. Winter storm warning for late Monday
afternoon through Tuesday will remain in effect. Felton
.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...Previous discussion
follows. A return to the wet weather is expected at the start of
the long term. With another AR push and a series of lows making
their way down from the Gulf of Alaska. Expect slightly cooler
temperatures and more rain and mountain snow to the Western
Washington area. Current ensemble guidance is showing snow levels
dropping down to around 1000 feet and lows in the 30s. As a result
some ensemble members are showing the potential for some wintery
mix in the higher hills of Western Washington towards the end of
the forecast period. But this 6+ days out so ensembles do not have
any high resolution guidance and a lot of flip flopping goes on
during this time period.

.AVIATION...Strong westerly flow aloft with a moist and stable
air mass into Monday as a frontal boundary sags southward across
the region. Widespread MVFR ceilings with pockets of IFR will
persist through most of Monday. Gusty south to southwesterly
surface winds will continue into Monday night.
KSEA...MVFR ceilings and periods of IFR through Monday afternoon.
Ceilings could lift to VFR after 00Z Tuesday as frontal boundary
sags south of the area. Gusty S-SW surface winds to continue with
gusts of 25 to 30 knots possible...especially overnight and again

.MARINE...Gusty winds will continue much of this week as a series of
fronts move through the waters. A gale warning continues this
evening for Puget Sound and for the central/east Strait of Juan de
Fuca and Admiralty Inlet this afternoon. Elsewhere, small craft
advisories remain in effect. Another period of gales is possible
Monday night through the Strait of Juan de Fuca as well as portions
of the outer coastal waters (beyond about 20 nm), with widespread
advisory conditions expected. Another front late in the week may
bring another round of potential gales late Thursday into Friday.
Seas over the coastal waters build will remain above 10 ft through
at least the first half of the week, reaching 14-17 ft Tuesday.
Another larger swell likely arrives late in the week behind the next
stronger front, with combined seas possibly around 20 ft over the
coastal waters Friday.

.HYDROLOGY...Rain associated with an atmospheric river will
continue to drift southward through Monday night. Moderate to
heavy rainfall is expected over much of the area. With 3-6 inches
of liquid water expected to fall over the Olympics and Cascades by
Monday afternoon. Snow levels will also continue to rise during
the overnight. These levels will peak around 6000 feet over the
Olympics and around 4000 feet over the Cascades.
In general the lowland areas are expected to receive 1-2 inches
of rain, with much less over the Puget Sound region due to the
rain shadow.
With this rainfall and rising snow levels, the area rivers are
expected to rise. With the Skokomish River in Mason County
expected to reach minor flood stage Monday morning. Other Western
Washington rivers that will need to be watched closely as they
approach full bank are the Bogachiel, Tolt, and Snoqualmie.
However, confidence is very low for these rivers, especially for
those out of the Cascades. It will be very dependent on the
rainfall rates as well as how much snow levels fluctuate during
the overnight.
