.UPDATE /THIS EVENING/...Forecast largely on track this evening -
only minor tweaks made to match current trends. Large area of
showers continues east of the Sound this evening with scattered
showers on the Olympic Peninsula and another batch of rain
offshore. Southwesterly flow aloft is driving higher snowfall
rates at Mt Baker than the rest of the Cascades. Showers will
continue into Sunday. Previous forecast discussion follows with

.SYNOPSIS...Upper level trough remaining offshore through Monday
with bands of moisture moving through the area. Trough moving
inland through Western Washington Tuesday. Upper level ridge
building offshore for the latter half of the week. The ridge will
not be strong enough to prevent systems from coming over the top
of the ridge into the area.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...Satellite imagery shows
deep cool upper level trough anchored offshore. Little change in
the pattern through Monday night with the upper level trough
remaining offshore and bands of moisture spinning around the
trough moving through Western Washington. Snow levels, currently
near 3000 feet, will slowly rise in the next 24 hours and be
around 4000 feet Sunday afternoon. Easterly gradients will
increase overnight and continue into Sunday. This will drive some
colder air into Snoqualmie pass keeping the snow level near the
pass level there through Sunday afternoon. Precipitation amounts
over the Central Cascades only in the quarter of an inch every 12
hours so have dropped the winter weather advisory for the area.
Different story for the North Cascades with the southwesterly flow
aloft a prime direction for the snow to pile up on Mount Baker.
Have gone the other direction and issued a winter storm warning
for the North Cascades. Could see up to 2 feet of new snow at
Mount Baker between now and early Monday morning. South Cascades
in between the other two areas, getting more precipitation than
the Central Cascades and less than the Northern Cascades. Right
now precipitation amounts do not look to be enough to get 6 inches
of snow in 12 hours ( minimum for a winter weather advisory ) so
have dropped the advisory for the Southern Cascades as well.
In the lowlands bands of moisture moving through the area in the
next 48 hours. Will broadbrush the forecast and go rain at times.
With the southwesterly flow aloft and plenty of cloud cover there
will be little in the way of temperature spread between the highs
and lows with temperatures dropping into the mid 40s overnight
with highs around 50 the next two days.
Upper level trough finally moving inland Tuesday bringing about an
end to the moist southwesterly flow aloft. Snow levels lowering
back down below the passes with possible winter weather advisory
new snow amounts for all of the Cascades. For the lowlands one
more round of rain. Felton
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...Extended models and
ensembles in pretty good agreement Wednesday and Thursday with an
upper level ridge building offshore but the ridge does not have
enough amplitude to rule out systems moving over the top of the
ridge from getting into Western Washington. This will keep at
least chance pops in the forecast. Wet solutions in the GFS
ensembles decrease Friday and Saturday while the ECMWF still has
over half of the solutions wet on Friday and around 40 percent of
the solutions with light precipitation Saturday. With the lack of
consistency between the models and the models trending toward a
weaker ridge will have to keep at least a slight chance of rain in
the forecast Friday and Saturday. Highs in the mid to upper 40s
with lows in the mid 30s to lower 40s through the period. Felton

.AVIATION...Southwesterly flow will persist aloft through the
weekend. The air mass will remain moist and upper level troughing
will remain the dominant influence across the Pacific Northwest.
Expect showers to continue through the evening hours, before yet
another frontal system moves over the area tonight into Sunday.
This next system will bring another round of more widespread rain
to the area overnight and Sunday. Cigs currently a mixed bag
across area terminals with mainly VFR and MVFR, though a few spots
of IFR in heavier showers. Expect an overall downward trend to
MVFR and IFR cigs across the region as the next system approaches,
with MVFR to IFR conditions likely across the majority of the TAF
sites by Sunday morning. Mountains will remain obscured in precip
and clouds.
KSEA...Mainly VFR this evening though brief periods of MVFR cigs
in pockets of heavier showers. Showers will continue into Sunday
with MVFR cigs overnight into Sunday. Current conditions are VFR

.MARINE...The next system will move through the region tonight
into Sunday, bringing another round of headlines to the area
waters. Overall, expect small craft southerly winds (20-30 kts)
to continue for the Coastal Waters, the Northern Inland Waters,
and the Eastern Strait as this second front approaches the region
tonight into Sunday. Winds will then start to ease late Sunday
morning into Sunday afternoon. An area of low pressure just
offshore will persist through Monday and then the weather pattern
looks to change around the middle of next week with periods of
stronger westerly flow at times.
Seas across the coastal waters remain near 10 feet and are
expected to remain elevated through the remainder of the weekend.

.HYDROLOGY...Bands of moisture moving through Western Washington
through Tuesday with precipitation amounts not high enough for any
flooding on most of the area rivers. The exception is the
Skokomish where 1.5 to 2.5 inches of rain along the south slopes
of the Olympics in the next 48 hours could push the river to near
flood stage Monday. Tuesday through next Saturday no river flooding
