.UPDATE...A front is bringing scattered showers across the area
through today. Areas of heavier showers will drop snow levels to
near 500-700 feet for potentially a rain/snow mix in areas of
Western Washington, specifically across Whatcom County. Little to
no snow accumulation is expected for today in these areas. A
Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for the Cascades from later
this morning through early Sunday for additional snowfall. The
potential for snow will increase tonight for areas of Whatcom
County, and into Skagit County/Admiralty Inlet, and Strait of Juan
de Fuca on Saturday. Heavier snow amounts are possible for these
areas from Saturday into Saturday evening, a Winter Storm Watch
is currently in effect for these areas. Snow potential for most
areas of Western Washington will be highest Saturday night
through Sunday night. Fraser Outflow winds will increase for
Whatcom County with gusts in the 35-40 MPH range possible through
tonight. Temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s across the area,
cooler tonight, with 20s for Whatcom County.

.SYNOPSIS...Front is bringing rain and scattered showers to the
area. A colder airmass in BC will near the area with Fraser
Outflow beginning to develop across the north later today. Colder
temperatures are likely beginning Saturday, bringing increasing
chances for wintry weather mixing with rain. Colder air finally
settled in by Sunday with light snow accumulation likely across W
WA lowlands. Dry and very cold for much of next week.

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...Water vapor imagery early
this Friday morning depicts a digging trough centered roughly
along the western coastline of Vancouver Island, with another
shortwave noted just upstream over the southern portion of the
Gulf of Alaska. Meanwhile, downstream, a robust area of low
pressure approaches the southern California Coast. Together, these
shorter-wave troughs are helping to carve out a longer-wave trough
over the Western US/Western Canada and into the adjacent NE
Pacific, which is all in response to the impressive upstream
amplification of an anticyclone over the Aleutian Islands and the
neighboring Pacific. Confidence has been high in this pattern
development over the last several days/week and it is a perfect
example of a strong blocking pattern, which translates to a
prolonged period of cold and possibly wintry weather over the PNW
and many parts of the Western US/Canada. At the surface this
morning, a frontal system is pushing across the PNW, with a very
cold continental airmass bottled up to the N/NE over BC. These
features will have a big impact on the forecast over W WA in the
coming days, meanwhile well downstream another area of low
pressure resides over the Northern Plains and high pressure
dominates the far Eastern US.
Feeling like a record on repeat here, but another round of
stratiform precipitation is pushing across the majority of the
area early this morning, of which is mostly located along and
ahead of the cold frontal boundary. Expect the stratiform precip
to push into the Cascades by daybreak, bringing another round of
heavy mountain snow, which has prompted an extension of the Winter
Storm Warning for the Cascades thru 10AM PST this morning. Some
pockets of heavy precip within the stratiform shield may pull snow
levels down locally and make for a rain/snow mix in some
locations, but largely expect typical lowland rain/mountain snow.
In the wake of the front, an unstable airmass will reside, helping
produce scattered convective showers for the remainder of the
day. Steep lapse rates given cold air aloft may help produce a
thunderstorm near the coast and perhaps could also drag snow
levels down locally to produce rain/snow/graupel mix briefly. Snow
levels should largely hang between 1000-1500 ft today.
As the day progresses, the track of this morning's sfc low will be
vital in terms of the progression of the modified arctic airmass
to our north up in Canada. A general consensus based on a handful
of model guidance (including hi-res) would argue that the low will
slowly saunter towards Grays Harbor or the central Coast this
afternoon and then trek towards the Southern Olympics this
evening. If this is indeed the case, this should help kick start
the Fraser outflow and begin to bring the cold air/low snow levels
into W Whatcom Co and the San Juan Islands this afternoon and
evening. Expect breezy winds out of the NE as this commences, and
its highly possible the outflow will make it down the entire
Strait. Snow levels may drop some in this scenario down the
Strait, but do not expect widespread cold to make it this entire
distance today. Elsewhere, southerly winds and high temps in the
low 40s indicate the outflow will not make much progress south
today.
By tonight, most guidance suggests the sfc low will pull NE
either around the Olympics into the Sound or remain in the
vicinity of the Olympics, with a slight northward advancement as
the dampening parent shortwave trough swings across the western
half of the state. Both features will quickly weaken into the
overnight hours, however ample energy overhead should allow for
continued shower activity. With temperatures expected to dip into
the mid 30s, a rain/snow mix or a transition to a short period of
wet snow will be possible overnight in the heavier convective
activity. As we get towards and into Saturday morning, another
shortwave trough will be dropping down from BC, helping to enhance
the lingering large scale lift provided by the weakening wave
from Friday. A sfc wave will develop in response to this upper
wave, probably somewhere around Vancouver Is and along/in the
vicinity of the modified arctic frontal boundary. Given the track
of the previous low along with the rather slow progression of the
upper shortwave trough, it does not appear the frontal boundary
will make much progress Saturday (a few hi-res models are quite
aggressive with the advancement, such as the UW WRF but right now
do not feel that type of solution is realistic). Unsettled
weather is likely, with widespread showers through the day, with
some pockets of widespread precipitation. Snow levels will drop
some and can expect rain/snow mix or transition to heavy wet snow
in the heaviest showers. Warm ground temperatures combined with
temps above freezing will make it hard for snow to not melt
quickly after any brief accumulations and some locations may just
see a cold rain. The big exception to this will be in Western
Whatcom where modified arctic air likely will move in and make for
a better chance for accumulating snow. Will also need to watch
for any upslope component over the Northern Olympics Friday night
and Saturday.
The progression of the arctic frontal boundary will be tricky
later Saturday afternoon and into the overnight period. Most
guidance is slow in bringing the sfc low and front south, so there
could be another delay in the arrival of colder air at the sfc
from about Everett southward. Despite this, air will be becoming
much colder above the sfc so do expect more of a transition to a
rain/snow mix or all snow. The front should progress south
Saturday night into Sunday, which will give way to widely
scattered snow showers. Light accumulations are possible,
potentially up to around the 2-4 inch range but starting to think
a widespread 0.5-1.5 inches is more likely, with isolated areas of
higher amounts that'll be dependent upon banding and/or
convergence. Moisture will be quickly diminishing Sunday as the
arctic air looks to finally have a better chance of filtering in.
Light snow through Sunday afternoon could allow for another half
an inch or so to accumulate before it is shunted south. We should
all notice a change in temperature by Sunday, with highs right
around or a few degrees below freezing (W Whatcom could struggle
to reach 20 in spots).
It still remains important to remain up to date on any forecast
changes over the next 12-24 hours as these events are really
complex and often small deviations in the actual observations vs
model guidance can make for major forecast changes. Once again
this will likely be an event that will only become more clear as
we begin to see the colder air move into northern Counties.

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...The long term pattern will
begin with the highly amplified pattern over Western North America
and the NE Pacific as a strong blocking ridge of high pressure
remains anchored over the Aleutians and nearby Pacific, with a
deep trough over Western Canada and Western US. A modified arctic
airmass will have progressed from BC through W WA, leaving the
region in a cold, sub-freezing airmass. Moisture will be scant on
Monday, so expect a dry day with temperatures in the teens to
begin the day (single digits in W Whatcom) and highs in the
afternoon in the low to mid 20s (teens W Whatcom). Breezy Fraser
outflow over W Whatcom and the San Juans will likely raise
concerns for wind chill problems.
On Tuesday, temperatures may be a few degrees cooler to start the
day as compared to Monday, but it may end up being a few degrees
warmer by the afternoon. An area of low pressure is still expected
to drop just west of the WA/OR coastal zones, but should largely
miss W WA. As mentioned before, if the modified airmass does not
make it as far S as forecast, some moisture could spread into SW
parts of the CWA, but given such dry air near the surface, it may
not even amount to much. Not much change in the airmass or overall
pattern into Wednesday so expect another dry and cold day with
highs below freezing.
Uncertainty increases by Thursday. There is evidence of some
moisture coming in from the north as a shortwave dampens the
blocking a ridge a bit on its way towards the area. At this point
in time, it appears that it'll bring some light precipitation to
the area and the question will be how well temperatures modify.
This will be dependent on several factors, but NBM guidance is
suggestive of temps warming back up towards freezing. Even if so,
would expect most of the precip to fall as light snow.
Lastly, it is imperative to be prepared for much colder
temperatures next week. Confidence is high in that such
temperatures will impact vulnerable populations such as the
homeless, pets, and those without adequate access to heating.

.AVIATION...Showers will remain in the area through today as
an upper level trough moves through the area. Additionally a
surface low is approaching the coast. Fraser river outflow is
already beginning, and will bring colder air to the KBLI and
possibly KCLM earlier today. A transition to snow is expected at
KBLI this morning, and possibly KCLM early this afternoon
(although confidence is lower with KCLM due to the proximity to
the water). The other terminals will likely see a rain snow mix
later today, with accumulations not expected until late
tonight/early Saturday morning. And finally, there is the chance
of some thunderstorms due to the cold air aloft causing some
instability. The primary areas of concern for thunder would be
areas along the coast including KHQM and maybe in the area between
KCLM and KPAE due to some mesoscale convergence occuring as the
low moves inland and winds shift.
Mostly MVFR conditions are expected throughout the day, but there
will likely be some moments of IFR or VFR as showers move in and
out of the area. Winds will are expected to be in the 7-10 knot
range with gusts higher in some locations. Direction is going to
change throughout the day.
KSEA...Showers will continue to move through the area throughout
the day. The switch over from rain to snow is not expected to
occur until around 0600 UTC. However, there is the chance for the
cold arctic air to make its way down earlier and if a heavier
shower moves over there could be some snow falling before that 06
UTC time. But accumulations are not expected to begin until
tonight. A switch back over to rain will likely occur Saturday
morning, but snow will return in the later part of the day and
into the night. Winds will be tricky as a surface low makes its
way inland in addition to northerly winds picking up.

.MARINE...Small craft advisories remain in effect for the area
waters due to gusty winds. The coastal waters have been
experiencing an occasional gust at Gale strength but sustained
winds seem to remain firmly in the SCA level. Winds in the
Northern Inland waters will be picking up this afternoon as the
Fraser River outflow strengthens. North/northeasterly winds will
strengthen throughout the weekend. With precipitation changing
over to snow possible over the waters. With winds and temperatures
well below freezing (especially over the Interior waters)
freezing spray will be a concern over the coming days.
