.SYNOPSIS...A front will move through the region tonight. Another
system over the weekend will produce additional lowland rain,
mountain snow, and locally breezy winds. Wet weather will persist
into Monday before gradually drier conditions develop Tuesday into
Wednesday. Another, potentially colder, system could impact the
region late next week.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...Seeing some rain in advance
of the approaching front, mainly confined to the western half of the
CWA at the time of this writing. Current satellite imagery does a
good job of showing the front just making it to the coastline...and
would expect rain to become more widespread as this feature makes
its way eastward tonight and through the overnight hours. Inherited
forecast has generally light QPF values and general weakness of most
current radar echoes would agree with that. Seeing some slightly
stronger echoes along the front, so some moments of moderate
rainfall may be possible but overall the general forecast for light
amounts looks good.
A secondary, but stronger, front will swing across the region
Saturday night and Sunday. QPF remains more generous with the
system. Snow levels will also rise a bit with this
system....reaching 3500 to 4000 feet in the Cascades by Sunday
evening. At this time, it seems reasonable that snowfall amounts
in the mountains in the Saturday night/Sunday timeframe will be
advisory level range...especially for the higher passes as well as
Mt. Baker and Paradise. A vertically stacked trough remains
offshore into Monday as another frontal system moves onshore with
another round of precipitation. Temperatures through the short
term forecast period will be close to normal. 18/27
.LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...From Previous Discussion...The
upper trough eventually shifts onshore on Tuesday with precipitation
turning showery and gradually decreasing into Wednesday. Model
ensembles continue their previous trends with anomalous upper
ridging developing well offshore the second half of next week and
mean troughing over the interior West. This puts Western Washington
firmly in cool north to northwest flow aloft with the possibility of
some systems dropping southward from British Columbia. Confidence in
any degree of detail for the tail end of the extended forecast
period remains relatively low, but this shift in pattern opens the
door to a potentially extended period of cooler than normal
temperatures and relatively low snow levels. 27

.AVIATION...Southwesterly flow will persist aloft through Saturday
as another upper level trough approaches and moves into the region.
Front associated with this trough producing some light rain in
advance and light to moderate rainfall right along the front. Cigs
over W WA generally VFR although there are some exceptions along the
coast and Olympic Peninsula...where bulk of rain activity is
currently located. As the front moves eastward tonight and
overnight, will see cigs drop and expect widespread MVFR conditions,
with those locations more prone to lower cigs possibly dipping down
into IFR conditions at times. Conditions look to gradually recover
starting late Saturday morning/early Saturday afternoon although
even with some improvement, some locations may only improve up to
high-end MVFR. 18
KSEA...VFR conditions this evening eroding down to MVFR tonight as
frontal system passes through, bringing some rainfall along with it.
Timing on this still looks to be on track with 06-09Z timeframe.
Southerly surface winds 4-8 kts will increase to 8-12 kts late
tonight and overnight. Borth/18

.MARINE...Southerly flow has started to increase across the
coastal waters this afternoon ahead of the next frontal system
slated to move through the region tonight and into Saturday. This
system looks to bring a round of gales to the Coastal Waters, the
Northern Inland Waters, and the Eastern Strait. Timing on inherited
headlines might be a little too fast, but overall, trend looks good
and as such see no need for any alteration. Winds should peak over
the coastal waters late tonight and across the inland waters by
early Saturday morning. In addition to gales, small craft
southerlies still look likely for the adjacent inland waters of
Admiralty Inlet during the overnight period. Winds will briefly ease
across area waters again Saturday morning to Saturday afternoon,
before yet another front arrives late Saturday into Sunday. This
front looks likely to yield another round of at least advisory
strength winds across most of the area waters.
Seas across the coastal waters and western Strait remain below 10
feet into early Saturday, before they gradually increase to 10 feet
again throughout the day. Seas then look likely to remain elevated
through the remainder of the weekend. Borth/18

.HYDROLOGY...From Previous Discussion...A series of fronts will move
through the region over the weekend into Monday. This will cause
some rises on area rivers, but, at this time, it appears that the
QPF and snow levels will remain low enough to preclude any
widespread flood concerns. Current guidance puts the Skokomish River
just short of minor flood stage by late Sunday evening. The
situation will be monitored.
