.UPDATE...Minor changes to the POP and WX grids this evening to
account for trends in precipitation across the region. The
convergence zone that brought street flooding to portions of the
north Sound and heavy snow at Stevens Pass earlier this evening
has dissipated. Scattered areas of showers continue across
Snohomish County and areas north at this hour. Steady light rain
continues across Lewis County at this hour, but the main band of
precipitation will sag southward over the next several hours,
giving Lewis County a break. With wet soils, weakening winds and
small dew point depressions, expect areas of patchy fog to develop
tonight.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 226 PM PST Sat Dec 18 2021/

SYNOPSIS...Precipitation will diminish tonight as a front slides
to the south of Western Washington. Mainly dry weather for Sunday
with cool temperatures. A front will slide north Sunday night and
Monday for additional precipitation and potentially a rain/snow
mix in the lowlands. A trough will be offshore through most of mid
week with a chillier weather pattern possible late week.

SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...Steadier rain this
afternoon as a front moves through the area with heavier mountain
snow. Rain for the lowlands will be heaviest through the afternoon
and diminish this evening as the front moves to the south. Snow
levels are falling with the front, with a round of heavier snow
for the Passes into this evening. Temperatures will also be a bit
cooler tonight as cold air filters into the area with lows in the
30s. Dry weather for Sunday with the chance for precipitation
mainly across the Southern Cascades and into Oregon with the
front located across that area. Some clearing during the day with
temperatures in the upper 30s to low 40s. Winds will be increasing
across Whatcom, north Skagit, and the San Juan Islands on Sunday
with Fraser Outflow, gusts of 30-40 MPH possible.

The front that will be positioned south of the area Sunday night
will slide north into Monday with precipitation spreading across
Western Washington during the day. Snow levels will initially be
low mainly for King County northward in the morning, and increase
later in the day. There is the possibility of rain/snow or light
snow during the day for two main geographic areas - King County
north into Whatcom County and Kitsap/Hood Canal/East Strait of
Juan de Fuca. Although most snow will not accumulate, light
accumulations will be possible for the Hood Canal/Kitsap area, and
the upslope areas of the northern Olympics. The Fraser Outflow
winds, although lighter, will potentially increase upslope
possibilities for these areas, currently expecting up to 0.5" to
possibly in 1" in these areas, but will monitor for updates, with
some uncertainty as to how much cold air is in place and the
northward extent of the precipitation with the front.
Precipitation may taper off Monday night into Tuesday with another
round of mainly rain for the lowlands and mountain snow Tuesday
night. Temperatures will be into the 40s for Tuesday.

LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...A weather system will be
sliding south along the BC coastline Wednesday with a trough
moving towards the Pacific Northwest area. An upper low will be
located offshore of the Western Coast. There is a considerable
amount of uncertainty even for mid week in the forecast, and will
mainly be discussing ensemble guidance to highlight the potential
cooler weather pattern. The lowland rain/mountain snow potential
continues on Wednesday with the trough sliding south. Ensembles
suggest the upper trough offshore will slide over the area on
Thursday, reinforcing the cooler temperatures across the Pacific
Northwest. However, the ensembles, GFS/ECWMF and other guidance
aren't exactly consistent on how much energy with the low along
the West Coast is incorporated into the trough. Either way,
ensembles have troughing over the Pacific Northwest through late
week and the weekend, increasing the potential for chilly weather.
Along with the below normal temperatures, snow levels will also
lower, mainly Friday and through the weekend. This will be a
period to monitor for the potential of any wintry weather in the
lowlands and mountains, though again there is uncertainty in this
forecast. Temperatures into the upper 30s and low 40s for highs
late week. JD

AVIATION...-SHRA will diminish across much of the area late
tonight into Sunday morning with MVFR CIGs lingering across the
Puget Sound TAF sites. Areas of patchy fog are possible tonight in
portions of the region, but confident remains low in fog directly
affecting a terminal. Winds will become northerly Sunday morning,
ushering in drier air. This will help scatter and clear lingering
low stratus. Northerly winds will prevail at nearly all TAF sites
with speeds generally remaining AOB 10kts.

KSEA...Winds have weakened considerably this evening and have become
southeasterly. Expect speeds to remain AOB 10 kts with gusts
becoming less likely in the next 1 to 2 hours. Winds will swing
around to the ENE after daybreak and will increase to around 10 kts
after 20Z Sunday.

MVFR CIGs generally ranging from 1500 to 2500 ft will persist at the
terminal through tonight. Increasing northerly winds late Sunday
morning into Sunday afternoon will bring in drier air, helping to
mix low stratus out at the terminal. VFR conditions expected Sunday
afternoon. Increasing clouds expected once again Sunday
evening/night, with precipitation moving back in late Sunday
night/Monday morning.

MARINE...Winds continue to decrease below hazardous levels across offshore
and inland waters this evening. Advisories for the Central and
Eastern Strait, as well as Admiralty Inlet and Puget Sound will be
allowed to expire tonight. Offshore, short period swells remain
between 10 and 12 feet. Expect swells to gradually decrease
through tonight, falling below 10 feet by early Sunday morning.

Winds will turn offshore on Sunday. Fraser outflow will develop
Sunday night and continue into Monday. Small craft advisory strength
north to northeast winds are likely most waters Sunday night and
into Monday. There is a small chance east to northeast wind could
reach gale force for the Northern Inland Waters and maybe West
Entrance to the Strait during this time.

Offshore flow will ease and turn more southerly Tuesday and continue
Wednesday and Thursday.

HYDROLOGY...The steady rain will slide of the area tonight. A
Flood Warning is in effect for the Skokomish River at Potlach. The
Skokomish River will recede late tonight into Sunday. Dry weather
for Sunday, another front on Monday.
