.SYNOPSIS...Lowland rain and mountain snow will continue across
western Washington into Sunday in the wake of a strong frontal
system. A cool upper level trough will remain over the region the
next several days, maintaining widespread showers and low snow
levels. A brief break in the unsettled weather will be possible
late week as upper level ridging traverses the region.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH TUESDAY/...Radar this afternoon
shows a band of heavier showers moving into the central Sound in
the wake of a strong frontal system that is exiting the region.
Rain has become more showery in the post frontal airmass, however
periods of heavy shower activity will continue into Sunday as
upper level troughing remains situated just offshore the Pacific
Northwest. Snow levels will fall from roughly 3000 feet to 2000
feet through the afternoon hours, so can expect periods of heavy
snow to continue for the mountains into early Sunday, with
additional snow accumulations of 12 to 15 inches possible. Winds
across the region have eased, but will continue to remain breezy
through much of the day and in the vicinity of any heavier shower
activity.
Isolated thunderstorms will be possible across the coastal waters
and along the coast tonight and Sunday. The best chances for
thunder remain during the afternoon hours on Sunday as a upper
level shortwave traverses the region. Overall, ensemble guidance
remains in good agreement that the upper level trough will remain
offshore through Monday, before tracking inland on Tuesday. This
will maintain wet, unsettled, and cooler conditions across western
Washington through the remainder of the short term. Expect onshore
flow to help enhance shower activity across the mountains into
early next week. Snow levels will remain low as the upper trough
tracks inland on Tuesday and may bring the potential for either
light snow or a rain/snow mix to portions of the lowlands during
the early morning hours. Will need to see how this trends in the
coming days as certainty in the details regarding timing and
amount of any potential lowland snow remains low. 14
.LONG TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...Showers will continue
early in the long term as another upper level trough moves across
the region on Wednesday. Snow levels will remain low, especially
during the overnight and early morning periods- so will need to
monitor the potential for a rain/snow mix for portions of the
lowlands early on Wednesday. Ensembles then hint at a drier period
on Thursday as an upper level ridge starts to build in from the
west. Drier conditions will remain short-lived, however, as
another system makes its way into the region Friday into Saturday.

.AVIATION...Ceilings this afternoon have improved some, with MVFR
and VFR the dominant categories. Another slug of rain is pushing
across Puget Sound and may result in a temporary reduction in both
cigs and vsbys to TAF sites in the vicinity. Behind this area of
moderate to locally heavy rain are scattered showers, with also a
better chance for ceiling improvements through the evening.
Unsettled conditions likely most of Sunday with a mix of MVFR and
VFR ceilings likely. Winds still breezy out of the S/SW generally
sustained 10 to 15 kts with gusts 20-25 kts. Winds will remain
breezy out of this direction for much of the period, with gusts
possibly dropping off this evening and increasing in likelihood
again after midnight and through Sunday morning.
KSEA...MVFR ceilings continue with an area of moderate to
potentially locally heavy rain expected in the 1400-1600 timeframe
where cigs and vsbys could be temporarily reduced. Scattered showers
then likely through the remainder of the period, with a mix of MVFR
and VFR ceilings. Winds breezy S/SW around 15 kts and gusts 20-
25kts, tapering some this evening and returning overnight thru Sun
morning.

.MARINE...Area waters lie in the wake of a strong frontal system
this afternoon with breezy W/SW winds continuing. Gale Warnings
remain valid over the Coastal Waters and the entire Strait of Juan
de Fuca, although winds this strong are likely to become more
isolated. Winds should ease enough this evening to drop the gales
and replace them with a SCA. Expect to see breezy conditions to
persist most of Sunday, with a SCA continuing for all waters except
the Central Strait. It is likely that some of these headlines will
need to be extended into Monday as gradients become easterly. A more
benign pattern then looks to set up towards mid-week as a loose
upper level trough hangs over the West Coast. Still expect unsettled
weather and SCA headlines may still be needed at times, but no major
weather systems are forecast.
Swells will continue to increase tonight and through Sunday out of
the W/NW to around 18 ft, which will make for hazardous seas over
the Coastal Waters and the West Entrance to the Strait and rough bar
conditions at Grays Harbor. Swells will gradually subside back
towards 10ft through early next.

.HYDROLOGY...The Skokomish River in Mason County was cresting at
Potlatch early this afternoon just above 17.5 feet. The Grays River
in Wahkiakum County (which is in the Portland NWS area) got above
flood stage too. With the heavy rain having changed to showers it
seems likely that the Skokomish River will probably be the only
river to get above flood stage in the Seattle NWS warning area
however the Chehalis forecast at Porter comes close late Sunday.
The upper gauges in the Chehalis basin look like they have crested.
The Chehalis at Grand Mound is forecast to rise through Sunday
morning, and at Porter the river will rise through the afternoon and
crest Sunday night--the latest RFC forecast had it less than half a
foot below minor flood stage there.
The air mass will cool as a trough moves ashore Monday and Tuesday.
With a lowering snow level and showers becoming more scattered in
the first half of next week, so river flooding is not expected next
