Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
257 AM PST Thu Nov 25 2021
.SYNOPSIS...Wet and mild conditions are expected over the next week
with at least 3 distinct atmospheric river events currently forecast
to impact the region. While none of these events by themselves would
likely result in widespread flooding, the cumulative effects of
these storms will increase flooding concerns over the next week.
Outside of rainfall, breezy to windy conditions are likely to
accompany the first storm system today.
&&
.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...A wet and windy
Thanksgiving Day is on tap today as the first in a series of
Pacific frontal systems track through western Washington. The main
impacts will be moderate to heavy rain, mainly focused along the
coast, Olympics and north Cascades which will lead to rising
rivers and possible flooding (most likely the Skokomish River in
Mason county). Winds will be strongest along the coast and over
the NW interior where gusty south winds to 35-45 mph are
expected. Winds here will peak early this afternoon then gradually
ease. Snow levels will be rising today but easterly flow will
keep pass temperatures close to freezing this morning with a
possible wintry mix (rain/snow/freezing rain), especially at
Stevens Pass. Temps will be rising with rain expected at the
passes by late morning. It'll be rainy but otherwise mild with a
warmer air mass in place and expect highs in the 50s. Showers
will decrease on Friday as this system exits. However, many rivers
flowing off the Cascades will still be rising with possible
flooding on the Nooksack - a Flood Watch is in effect for Whatcom
county.
A second atmospheric river (AR) will reach the Pac NW on Saturday
with another round of moderate to heavy rain focused along the
coast, Olympics and central/northern Cascades. Sharp rises are
expected again on the rivers which may bring a few more rivers
closer to flood (like the Skagit). 33
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Sunday remains wet and
active as the Saturday AR remains over the region, with heavy rain
continuing along the coast, Olympics and north Cascades. Rain
rates taper off Sunday night and Monday as a short wave trough
clips through western WA. We're still expecting rain over the
region through this period but not hydrologically significant
which should allow the rivers to recede. The air mass will still
remain mild with temps in the 50s along with high snow levels in
the mountains.
The third and final AR is slated for next Tuesday and/or
Wednesday with river flooding being the primary impact once again.
This largely depends on how the rivers reacted/responded to the
two previous ARs. 33
&&
.AVIATION...Upper level ridging will weaken and flatten across the
Pacific Northwest today. Flow aloft will remain westerly through
the TAF period. A frontal system moving across the region today
will yield primarily MVFR conditions for most area terminals,
though periods of IFR visibilities and cigs cannot be ruled out
in heavier showers within the warm sector of the system today.
Southerly winds will continue to increase this morning, becoming
gusty for area terminals along the coast and across the Northern
Interior through the day. Marginal LLWS may develop late in the
period with strong low- level southwest flow developing before
surface winds catch up, but confidence not high enough for
inclusion in any TAF at this time.
KSEA...VFR conditions continue early this morning with light
rain at the terminal. Expect cigs to gradually lower through the
morning hours, approaching 4000 ft near midday and 1500 ft by late
afternoon as heavier rain approaches. South winds to continue
through the day, with speeds increasing to 7-10 kts by late
morning. 14
&&
.MARINE...A frontal system will move across the region today and
will bring gale force winds to portions of the Coastal Waters, the
Northern Inland Waters, Admiralty Inlet, and the East Entrance of
the Strait of Juan de Fuca. Thus, have maintained the gale
warnings in effect for these areas with the morning forecast
package. All other area waters, with an exception of the Central
Strait, will likely see small craft strength winds as this system
moves across the region. Winds will gradually ease tonight and
Friday in between weather systems, however another system slated
to move across the area waters over the weekend looks to bring
another round of headlines to most area waters.
West swells will build to 10-13 feet across the coastal waters
today and into the West Entrance of the Strait today, before
gradually subsiding again to roughly 10 feet by Friday night. 14
&&
.HYDROLOGY...Three wet frontal systems or 'atmospheric rivers'
will move through B.C. and partly through Western Washington over
the next week. The cumulative effect of these periods of rain will
keep a chance for river flooding in mind so will will have to
keep an eye on the river forecasts. A Flood Watch is in effect for
the Skokomish River in Mason County and the Nooksack River in
Whatcom. Other rivers flowing out of the Olympics and the central
and northern Cascades will need to be monitored pretty closely
over the next week and a Hydrologic Outlook has been issued for
that. 33

Rainfall of 3 to 8 inches over the past two weeks has increased soil moisture levels across western Washington. Heavy rainfall of 1 to 3 inches is expected across the lowlands through Friday, with highest amounts along the coast and near the west slopes of the Olympics and Cascades. This amount of rain will put extra pressure on soil instability, leading to an increased threat of landslides.
