Area forecast discussion, Aug 28, 8:58 AM PDT, 5 hours 54 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Seattle WA 858 AM PDT Sat Aug 28 2021 .UPDATE...Satellite showing some areas of patchy fog across the region this morning, primarily along area waterways and in portions of the north and central Cascades. Trends already show the thin layer of fog dissipating, so expect conditions to clear out by late morning for the majority of the interior. The exception could be some stratus and patchy fog lingering along the coast this afternoon. Otherwise, expect sun for areas across the interior today as shortwave ridging traverses the region. Afternoon highs along the coast are expected to remain in the 60s, while highs across the interior climb into the mid to upper 70s. A few spots across the Chehalis river valley could hit 80. Only minor tweaks made to the forecast this morning to account for the extent of the patchy fog. The previous discussion follows below, with updates made to the aviation section. 14 && .SYNOPSIS...Dry and warmer conditions expected this weekend as high pressure builds over the area. A return to cooler and cloudier weather expected early next week as we fall into a general unsettled weather pattern. && .SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH MONDAY/...Upper level ridging will continue to move into the area today. This ridge does not linger for very long as it will flatten throughout the day and pass over into E WA by early this evening. Still, this will result in warmer temperatures today with upper 60s along the coast and most of the interior lowlands getting up into the mid to upper 70s. A more zonal influence expected for Sunday as an upper level trough passes well to the north of the area in northern BC. This should have little impact to the area save for taking the edge off afternoon highs, with the coast dipping a bit into the mid 60s while the interior will typically see mid to upper 70s for the southern half, lower to mid 70s for the northern half. Monday sees the aforementioned trough start to dig southward and while deterministic models have some precip near the area or maybe some isolated patches within the CWA, ensembles maintain a dry forecast...and will opt for that solution in the forecast. The main impact will be cooler temperatures returning to W WA...with afternoon highs for coastal locations dipping down into the lower 60s while the interior drops into the mid 60s to around 70. .LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...Deterministic models deviate a little bit here as the ECMWF keeps the upper level low at the core of this trough still to the north of the Canadian border while the GFS brings it further south into WA. In terms of precip chances however, the two agree that W WA should remain generally dry Wed and Thu. Serious disagreements in the deterministic models and a high level of uncertainty in ensembles arise for Friday. GFS deepens the trough even further with the upper level low dipping down into northern CA. ECMWF, however, starts to build a ridge over the area. Both models agree that whatever happens, the area should remain dry. Most ensemble members trend this way as well. As such, not a whole lot of confidence toward the end of the extended except to say that it will likely remain dry. Will see a gradual warm up over the area as high temps Tuesday will only be a degree or two warmer than Monday before climbing a bit more significantly on Wed, with coastal sites getting into the mid 60s while the interior sits solidly in the lower to mid 70s. The remainder of the long term gets a bit warmer with around 70 for the coast and mid to upper 70s for much of the interior both Thursday and Friday. 18 && .AVIATION...High pressure will keep the Western Washington area dry for throughout the weekend. As of 1500 UTC some fog remains in some of the valleys, but is quickly mixing out this morning. Clear skies are expected for the rest of the day. Marine stratus is expected to move back inland starting after 1200 UTC Sunday. Low clouds and fog should once again mix out fairly quickly after sunrise. Winds throughout they day will remain north/northwesterly and will pick up to 7-10 knots this afternoon. KSEA...Mostly clear skies will remain in place through today. Winds will gradually pick up to around 10 knots by this afternoon (around 0000 UTC). Winds are expected to remain northwesterly through the day before easing during the night as the marine layer moves in. Butwin && .MARINE...High pressure over the NE Pacific will maintain breezy northwest winds over the coastal waters, west winds through the Strait of Juan de Fuca and northerly winds through Puget Sound. Winds will be strongest each afternoon and evening. While winds are expected to remain generally below advisory criteria, could see some gusts to 25 kt (along with steep seas) over the coastal waters south of around Point Grenville this afternoon and especially Sunday afternoon. Similarly winds through the Strait will generally be to 20 kt, through the windiest spots may occasionally reach 25 kt. Seas over the coastal waters remain 5 to 7 ft and largely comprised of a locally generated fresh swell. The next front reaches the waters around Monday, bringing stronger westerly winds to the coastal waters and a likely advisory-strength push of west winds through the Strait.
