Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
814 PM PDT Fri Jul 30 2021
.UPDATE...Made some minor edits to the POP and weather grids for
this evening to account for the area of showers in the Cascades.
Hi-res guidance is trending toward this area of showers to
decrease over the next several hours, before scattered showers
increase in coverage early Saturday morning across Western
Washington as deeper moisture makes its way northward.
Otherwise, mostly dry conditions expected this evening with
increasing clouds and elevated smoke (evident by the hazy
horizon). Overnight lows will remain in the mid to upper 60s
across most inland locations.

.PREV DISCUSSION... /issued 312 PM PDT Fri Jul 30 2021/
SYNOPSIS...Afternoon temperatures have risen into the 90s as was
expected. We are watching thunderstorms to our south that may
move into our forecast area later this afternoon. Hot temperatures
for the interior are still expected for Saturday. A return to
what has been the July weather pattern is expected for the start
of August.
SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH MONDAY/...Temperatures throughout
Interior Western Washington have risen into the upper 80s to 90s
as of 1430. Areas near the the coastal and interior waters are
looking rather comfortable with current temperatures in the 70s.
Not much relief from the heat is expected tonight with lows in the
mid to upper 60s expected for inland locations. Current radar
shows some showers and thunderstorms moving into Washington from
Northern Oregon. Currently they are mostly situated over the
Cascades. The current forecast has these storms staying south of
Snoqualmie Pass, and will mostly be on the east side of the crest.
With the ridge moving east, and smoke aloft, the chance of
thunderstorms along the Cascade crest has decreased. But we will
likely still experience some cloudy skies from the monsoonal
moisture that has been moving in. Additionally, a few areas could
see some light rain showers.
Temperatures Saturday will be a few degrees cooler tomorrow with
highs in the upper 80s to low 90s. However, we are expecting the
marine pushes to return Saturday night into Sunday morning which
will provide relief from the hot conditions. Moreover, high
temperatures will be going back down to the mid 80s for Sunday.
A weak disturbance will move through Sunday which could bring some
light rain showers to the Cascades. There remains a chance that
the northern portion of the Cascades could see some some scattered
thunderstorms.
For Monday expect highs in the 80s for the interior areas, and 70s
by the waters.

LONG TERM /TUESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY/...The start of the long term
is expected to be dry with nightly marine pushes bringing in
morning clouds. With seasonable temperatures. There is a low
pressure system and a cold front that is expected to be moving
through towards the end of the forecast period. Models are still a
bit split on the strength of this system. But it has been trending
in favor of some measurable rain throughout the area. However,
some models have been trying to push back the timing of this
system as well as having it be significantly drier. We should have
a better grasp on this part of the forecast early next week.

AVIATION...Southerly flow aloft will continue tonight and
Saturday with an upper trough over the Northeast Pacific and an
upper ridge over the Intermountain West. At the surface, weak
onshore flow will continue with high pressure offshore and lower
pressure inland. The air mass will be stable except unstable over
the Cascades this evening and again Saturday afternoon and
evening. Mid and high clouds - mostly above 12000 feet MSL - will
increase from the south tonight. Low clouds should develop at the
coast after midnight tonight then break up late Saturday morning.
KSEA...Mid and high clouds increasing tonight and continuing on
Saturday. Northerly wind 6-10 knots will ease tonight then rise to
8-12 knots Saturday afternoon.
Schneider
MARINE...Varying amounts of onshore flow will continue for
the next several days with high pressure offshore and lower
pressure inland. Small craft advisory strength west winds are
expected each night for the Central Strait of Juan de Fuca and
East Entrance. There will also be small craft advisory strength
northwest winds for the Coastal Waters at times the next few
days. A frontal system will approach from the west on Wednesday.
Schneider
FIRE WEATHER...An upper level ridge will remain situated across
the region and continue to promote very warm and dry conditions
across Western Washington today and heading into the weekend. This
will continue to dry out area fuels, which are narrowing in on
their 90th percentiles. Weak onshore flow will continue in the low
levels on Saturday, but strengthening inversions will keep RH
recoveries across the mountains more modest again overnight. Min
RHs look to dip down into the 25-30% range for the Cascades and
portions of the southern interior- mainly from Olympia southward
again on Saturday. An upper level shortwave will move across
Eastern Washington over the weekend, which could produce a few
thunderstorms along the Cascade crest into Sunday. Heightened fire
weather concerns will persist into Saturday, before stronger
onshore flow brings cooler temperatures and pushes more moisture
back into the region on Sunday.
