.SYNOPSIS...Dangerously hot conditions are expected again today as
temperatures peak and climb back into the triple digits.
Anomalously strong ridging combined with east winds in the lower
levels will continue to work in tandem to provide historically hot
temperatures over W WA before marine air begins to bring some
relief to the area. The return to onshore flow Tuesday will mark
the end of the prolonged heat wave, although above normal
temperatures will continue and likely prolong heat-related impacts
through mid-week. From mid-week through the weekend, above normal
temperatures and dry conditions are expected, which may keep fire
weather concerns elevated.

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...The upper level pattern
this morning continues to be dominated by an anomalous ridge of
high pressure, of which extends from offshore the Southern
California Coast up through Western Canada and is centered roughly
over Southern BC and Washington. Upstream from this high
amplitude feature lies a compact shortwave trough of low pressure
off the Northern California Coast, while downstream lies a weak,
positively open wave trough over the Central CONUS with another,
less intense and lower amplitude ridge over the Eastern CONUS. In
the lower levels, high pressure extends from the Canadian Prairies
into the US Rockies, with a thermal trough of low pressure
spotted along the WA Coast stemming from thermally induced low
pressure over the interior or Oregon and California.

The climax of the historic Pacific Northwest heatwave is expected
today, with temperatures easily climbing back into the triple digits
for most locations at a handful of degrees warmer than yesterday.
There continues to be high confidence in many spots shattering all-
time record high temperatures this afternoon. Before diving more
into the meteorology behind today's extreme temperatures, it is
important to first make note of current temperatures as of around
230 AM this morning. Most locations in Western Washington are
still in the mid to upper 70s, with a few locations still in the
80s! This will offer little in the way of relief from yesterday's
extreme heat as the sun will be rising in just a few short hours
and temperatures are only likely to drop a few degrees at best
before then.

As the sun comes up this morning, the upper level ridge of high
pressure will have moved very little since yesterday, with guidance
indicating its center at around 597dm. This will continue to provide
strong subsidence from aloft across the entire area, as the sinking
air will continue to compress and warm as it reaches the surface. In
addition to this, the previously mentioned thermal trough will
continue along the Coast early this morning, with temperatures
really ramping up across the Coast as the sun rises (and elsewhere
obviously, too). The compact upper level shortwave trough over the
Northern California Coast will also continue to slowly move north
this morning. This feature will carry an area of low pressure
with it near the surface, which combined with the thermal trough
should help increase the pressure gradient between it and the
higher pressure over the Rockies. This will induce stronger
easterly/offshore flow over the local area, enhancing temperatures
via downsloping off the Cascades. Then, towards late morning as
the shortwave trough continues northward offshore, it will bring
ocean-cooled southerly flow with it, which will quickly begin to
cool down coastal locations from south to north. Therefore, expect
temperatures at places like Hoquiam and La Push to reach their
high temperatures early in the day. As relief is brought to the
Coast, unfortunately the thermal trough will move east towards
Puget Sound. This will coincide with extreme temperatures over
interior Western Washington with many locations reaching up
towards 110-115 this afternoon. Areas right along and very near
the waters will be spared such extreme temperatures but
nonetheless will still be uncomfortably hot. Areas east of Lake
Washington will likely be hottest, given the proximity to the
easterly wind and thermal trough.

Perhaps the good news in all of this is that the shortwave trough
just offshore will help nudge the upper level high ever so slightly
east this evening and tonight, helping to replace those warm,
easterly downslope winds off the Cascades with more W/SW flow from
off the Pacific. This will help make for a noticeably cooler night
tonight as compared to the previous few nights, although it will
still likely be uncomfortably warm by PacNW standards. Lows will be
coolest along the Coast and down the Strait, with temps in the upper
50s to around 60, with mid to upper 60s over much of the remaining
interior.

For Tuesday, a noticeable marine layer will impact the Coast and the
Lower Chehalis Valley, with the return of overcast skies. For the
rest of the area, we will finally begin to emerge out of the blazes
of our heatwave, with the axis and the center of the historic ridge
pushed now to the east over the BC/Alberta border and through
Eastern WA and the ID panhandle. The return to southerly flow will
provide some relief, although conditions will still be hot. Although
the center of the ridge will be east, it will still hold enough of
an influence over the area to push afternoon temperatures back up
towards 90 (temps near the Coast will be around 70). Although
Tuesday will run about 20 degrees cooler than Monday, it is
imperative that heat-related precautions are not just automatically
neglected. Heat-related impacts are likely to carry over given that
there won't be an extended period of cooler temperatures to fully
recover from the extreme heat of the past few days. For this reason,
the excessive heat warning will remain in effect through Tuesday.

For Tuesday night/Wednesday, a much stronger marine push is
anticipated, likely bringing a marine stratus deck to much of the
interior. The shortwave trough will continue to be largely
responsible for this marine air, and also warrants a closer look
into the potential for thunderstorms. Although the shortwave
contains decent dynamical support over the coastal waters as well
as the WA Coast/Olympic Peninsula, the absence of instability will
preclude any potential for thunderstorms as it moves north.
Marine stratus will retreat back to the Coast through the late
morning and afternoon, yielding another sunny day. However, given
the onshore flow, temperatures will also peak in the low 80s.
While this is still warm for this time of year, it will feel
noticeably more comfortable than previous days.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...The long term forecast
period on Thursday features weak upper level troughing over the
Olympic Peninsula and coastal waters, with the anomalous ridge now
centered near the Alberta/Saskatchewan border. This will keep W
WA in an onshore flow regime, with some morning clouds and more
afternoon sun. Temperatures will be similar to Wednesday in the
low to mid 80s (60s at the Coast). Ensemble consensus currently
projects weak/unorganized troughing offshore with broad ridging
over the Western US. Temperatures will increase some each day,
into the upper 80s by Friday/Saturday, but the pattern is not
suggestive to the return of extreme heat. Essentially, the area
will continue to see above normal temperatures in the absence of
precipitation. As such, although onshore flow will be prevalent,
fire weather conditions will need to be monitored closely.

.AVIATION...VFR conditions through the period at all TAF sites.
Northerly winds will prevail at nearly all TAF sites this morning
(KHQM being the exception). Easterly winds will approach the Puget
Sound TAF sites between 18-21Z. Confidence is moderate in winds
shifting to the east- southeast at KSEA, KBFI and KPAE. Given
trends in model guidance, expecting winds to remain below 10 kts
with this wind shift.

Westerly to southwesterly surface winds will spread across Western
Washington after 21Z, reaching the Puget Sound area around 03Z and
spreading northward. All inland TAF sites will see a prevailing wind
out of the south by the end of the period with speeds generally AOB
10 kts.

KSEA...VFR conditions through the period with increasing
northerly surface winds this morning. Confidence is moderate in a
brief wind shift to the southeast between 20-21Z. If winds do
shift to the southeast, wind speeds will most likely be below 7
kts. A strong west- southwesterly push of surface winds is
expected to reach the terminal around 03Z this evening. Expect
winds to increase to 8 to 12 kts around this timeframe.
Southwesterly winds will prevail through the end of the period.

.MARINE...Thermal trough will shift inland into the Puget Sound
area which will flip winds from north to southerly and yield an
increase in onshore winds this afternoon and evening. A tight
pressure gradient between the ridge of high pressure inland and
the aforementioned low will yield strong winds through the
Chehalis Gap, yielding advisory level winds across the Hood Canal
and Puget Sound by Monday night. Strong winds will also spread
into the Northern Inland waters tonight as well, persisting into
Tuesday. Gales are expected through the Strait of Juan de Fuca
tonight and are likely again Tuesday night.

Onshore flow will persist through the remainder of the week with
strong westerly nocturnal pushes down the Strait of Juan de Fuca
through the weekend. Offshore swells will generally remain westerly
to west-northwesterly 4 to 7 feet through the period.

FIRE WEATHER...Hot and dry conditions will persist again today,
with record-setting temperatures highly likely as an anomalous
ridge continues to provide strong subsidence from aloft. Fuels
continue to dry under these conditions, with ERC values at or
above the 90th percentile for many zones, including the western
slopes of the Olympics and the adjacent terrain towards the Coast,
as well as the N and S Cascades along with their adjacent
foothills. Dry fuels, combined with east winds continuing off the
Cascades will make for rather low min RH values this afternoon in
conjunction with unstable conditions (widespread, prolonged mid
level Haines values of 6). These conditions have prompted an
expansion of the Red Flag Warning to include the N Cascades (Fire
Wx zone 658) and the Cascade foothills (Fire Wx zones 656 and 657)
in addition to the S Cascades (Fire Wx zone 659). Fires are
expected to be easily ignited across these zones and efforts to
mitigate the potential for any fire starts are strongly
encouraged. East winds are expected to ease this evening as
onshore flow becomes more dominant off the Pacific. This should
allow the Red Flag Warnings to expire, although emphasis will
still be placed on the widespread dry fuels across these areas. A
continued period of warm and dry conditions are likely through the
week and upcoming weekend, so fire weather concerns will likely
continue to be elevated for the foreseeable future, even if
onshore flow is prevalent.

Even for areas outside of the Red Flag Warnings, it is still
important to note that the environment remains favorable for
roadside and brush fires. As such, drivers are highly encouraged
to check and secure anything that may be dangling from any
trailers or undercarriages, as these may create sparks.
Additionally, any smokers are strongly encouraged to extinguish
and leave butts in car ashtrays, as flinging them out the window
could also lead to roadside fires.
