forecast through Friday morning, will drive the Skokomish river
above flood stage Thursday.
PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
Motorists should not attempt to drive around barricades or drive
cars through flooded areas.
Turn around, don't drown when encountering flooded roads. Most flood

.SYNOPSIS...Rainy weather is on tap for Western Washington through
Friday. Periods of heavy rain will fall in the mountains as the
snow level rises well above the passes. Rivers across Western
Washington will rise sharply Friday, but Saturday will see a
break in the weather. Another wet frontal system will move into
British Columbia Sunday and that system will sag south through
Western Washington Sunday night and Monday.

.SHORT TERM /TODAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...There is a warm front over
the area--at 8am the more significant rain was over southwest
Washington, but it was cloudy and drizzling elsewhere. The
mountains will see periods of heavy rain and the water vapor
transport forecast certainly looks like a typical atmospheric
river later today through the day Friday. Looking at the past ten
forecasts from the WRFGFS shows very little change in the qpf with
a total 48hr rainfall up to daybreak Saturday of roughly 3-5"
over Western Washington with very little shift north or south of
this bullseye. Naturally if you look closer at a finer 1km
forecast, then details like a nice Quimper Peninsula rain shadow
show up--it might only rain half an inch between Discovery Bay and
Dabob Bay while the heaviest rain totals on the higher peaks
between about Monte Cristo and Mount Rainier could be closer to
7". I'd say this sort of atmospheric river event happens a couple
of times each winter on average but is only about half of what our
bigger flood events are like and, because of the relatively short
duration, falls far short of the big events that have ruined
roads and campgrounds. That said, the rivers will still come up
quickly tonight and Friday and there is of course no change to the
flood watch. After some more rain gets into the gauges later
today and tonight, the RFC forecasts ought to have a pretty good
fix on what the rivers will do. Saturday will see a break in the
weather while rivers crest. 19
.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...Next week looks to begin
rather active as the transient upper ridge weakens enough to allow
a few additional disturbances to reach Western Washington. Another
system late Sunday into Monday will likely bring breezy winds and
another shot of heavy rain. Snow levels likely lower with this
system and while there may be a fair amount of moisture with it,
it may be more progressive in nature than the AR across the region
today and Friday. Nevertheless, with many area rivers likely still
running high from this week's rain, will need to continue to
closely monitor for potential additional hydro concerns. With a
fairly robust cold front crossing late Monday into Tuesday, will
see a prominent shift to much cooler temperatures back into the
40s after a more mild stretch. With ensembles favoring another
weak ridge toward midweek after this front, will need to keep an
eye on the potential for a few significantly cooler nights across
the region by Tuesday night with lows well into the 30s. Cullen

.AVIATION...Warm fronts give Western Washington lousy weather with
low cigs and poor vsby, and today will be no exception. Strong
westerly flow aloft will give heavy rain over the mountains which
will be completely obscured--for that matter the hills in the
lowlands will be mostly obscured. Expect areas of IFR candidness.

KSEA...Typical low cigs and poor vsby under a warm front but at
least pressure gradients are light and winds will not be a factor.

.MARINE...For now the inland waters do not have much wind, but we
will probably see a breeze kicking in tonight for small craft
advisories. The coastal waters should mostly stay in a range of
SE20-30kt with a slow moving frontal system over the area through
the end of the week. Saturday will see a break with a surface high
over the area before another frontal system arrives Sunday and
Monday--and that front could bring gales into the area. 19

.HYDROLOGY...I will repeat what I wrote above--the rivers will
rise sharply tonight and Friday and there is no change to the
flood watch. After some more rain gets into the gauges later
today and tonight there ought to be a pretty good fix on what the
rivers will do--there is always a little fog of war in the
beginning of a heavy rain event, but it sure helps that this is a
relatively short duration event and that Saturday will see a
break in the weather while rivers crest. The frontal system that
arrives Sunday night and Monday might give us a second round of
river flooding--however most models have been showing the heaviest
rain is spent up on the the northern half of Vancouver Island and
the BC coast, so that is encouraging. 19
