.SYNOPSIS...Snow will continue to transition back to rain as a
modified Pacific airmass helps erode the shallow layer of cold air
near the surface through Monday morning. A cold front will bring
rain to the area on Monday, with rain eventually tapering to
showers Tuesday and Wednesday. Monday will mark the return back to
the lowland rain and mountain snow pattern, with the storm track
likely aimed at the Pacific Northwest late in the week and through
next weekend, making for an extended period of wet and unsettled
weather.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...The synoptic pattern
this afternoon is characterized by a weak ridge of high pressure
building into the Pacific Northwest, with an elongated vort max
sliding down its northeastern periphery into portions of far NW
WA. A much deeper trough is located downstream across the Bid Bend
area of Texas and into northern Mexico. At the surface, a frontal
system is noted near the WA Coast, with the warm frontal portion
extending into the Olympic Peninsula and the cold frontal portion
still offshore. Further east, a strong area of high pressure is
centered over the Northern/Central Great Plains.

The tricky forecast for Western Washington continues this
afternoon as the aforementioned warm frontal boundary brings
modified Pacific/maritime moisture into the area. This will make
for a transition from snow to rain from west to east, with the
potential for a winter mix or a period of freezing rain and/or
sleet as the transition occurs.

Current radar imagery this afternoon shows widespread
precipitation encompassing much of Western Washington this
afternoon. Areas from roughly the southeastern portion of Puget
Sound northward to the US/Canada border and eastward to the
Cascade crest have been and are currently experiencing mostly snow
thus far today, with some mesoscale banding developing off and on,
especially from portions of northern King County up through
Island County. Widespread new snow accumulations of 1-2" have been
reported within this general area, with the mesoscale snow bands
capable of producing locally higher amounts. Glancing just to SW
towards the South Sound and into the Chehalis Valley, currently
seeing temperatures beginning to "warm" up a few degrees into the
mid and upper 30s, with the Coast in the upper 30s to low 40s in
the wake of the warm front.

With all of this in mind, we begin to dive a bit deeper into the
precip type forecast thru Monday morning. Areas along and near the
Coast and thru the SW Interior are expected to remain all rain
throughout the remainder of this event as the more maritime
airmass continues to move in and onshore flow ensues. Around and east
of Puget Sound, model soundings are suggestive of a warm nose of
air off the Pacific spreading overtop of the shallow modified
arctic airmass near the surface that may be stubborn to erode.
Based on the current surface analysis/warm frontal placement, the
most likely areas where the warm air is spreading overtop the cold
air are around the South Sound towards the Seattle metro
(essentially Olympia to Tacoma to Seattle). From this afternoon
and into the early evening, it's possible these areas and
locations in the general vicinity will see some sleet mix with
snow initially before transitioning briefly to freezing rain. By
mid-evening, these locations are expected to transition to rain
(tho there could be some pockets of freezing rain continuing). The
warm nose of air will then continue to move northward through the
overnight period, eventually reaching Whatcom County after
midnight. For the lowland locations experiencing a wintry mix,
there could be a brief period of time where slick conditions
develop, especially if freezing rain materializes, but no ice
accumulation is expected.

Perhaps the biggest concern beginning this afternoon and
continuing into the overnight period will be the potential for
freezing rain in the valleys of the foothills of the Cascades.
Confidence has increased somewhat in the potential for this, with
the highest chance of FZRN extending roughly from Enumclaw up
towards North Bend, potentially even as far north as Sultan and
Index. Ice accumulation will be possible if this occurs, with
estimated totals between 0.10 and 0.20 inches. This would be
enough to cause to power disruptions along with treacherous travel
conditions.

By daybreak Monday, most, if not all, of Western Washington should
have transitioned to rain, with coverage increasing as the cold
front moves thru the area. There will exist the concern for areas
of urban flooding as rain falls on recent snowpack, especially in
areas of poor drainage. Temps should rise back into the 40s. Rain
will taper to showers into Tuesday, with continued temperature
modification over the area. The area may see a brief break in the
wet and active weather towards the latter half of Wednesday.

NOTE: It's very difficult to pinpoint exactly when the snow to
rain transition will occur over the area thru the rest of today
and tonight (this forecast could be a few hours too slow, or a bit
too fast), and it's also possible the threat for freezing rain
and sleet may not materialize everywhere.

.LONG TERM /THURSDAY THROUGH SUNDAY/...Once again the brunt of the
forecast today went into the short term, however, the local area
is still on track for an active weather week, with the return to
the regular lowland rain and mountain snow pattern.

Based on H5 ensemble guidance, a trough is expected to develop
over the Gulf of Alaska, with a ridge developing offshore the
southern US West Coast. This will aim the Pacific storm track at
the Pacific Northwest, lending towards a period of wet weather
through this entire long term forecast period.

.AVIATION...Precipitation over Western Washington is currently
making that change over from snow into rain. As of 2pm the
transition to rain is happening fairly quickly with thus far no
freezing rain being reported. That said, for terminals that are
just undergoing the change over or are still receiving snow the
chance of freezing rain still remains. Once a terminal is fully
in rain the threat for any wintery precipitation will be over as
temperatures will continue to rise. Ceiling wise we expect
conditions to mainly be in MVFR or high end IFR. However, as the
front moves through and we have the change over to rain expect low
IFR to LIFR conditions. Wind wise, west/northwesterly flow aloft
will continue. And down at the surface expect winds to become more
southerly through the rest of today before becoming Westerly by
Monday.

KSEA...The transition from snow to rain is expected to occur in
the next few hours. During this time expect IFR conditions with
lower ceilings and decreased visibility. Surface winds are
expected to become southerly during the overnight.

.MARINE...With a weather systems continuing to move through the
area waters, brining small craft advisories for all the area
waters. As the system moves onshore we anticipate gale force winds
over the Coastal Waters as well as for the West Entrance to the
Strait of Juan de Fuca.
The northwest swells of 10-12 feet are expected to continue until
late Monday afternoon. From then on swells are expected to
increase to 15-20 feet. With the largest swells occuring in the
outer coastal waters.

.HYDROLOGY...Current hydrology forecast remains largely
unchanged, although rivers may begin to rise towards the end up
the upcoming week as the pattern becomes more active. There is
currently no river flooding expected in the next 7 days. The
threat for urban flooding is possible tonight into Monday with
warmer temperatures melting the lowland snowpack gets added to the
rain across the area.
