What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this excessive heat warning went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Seattle, WA wrote its last area forecast discussion before this excessive heat warning went out at Jun 24, 2:15 PM PDT, 27 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 24, 2:15 PM PDT, 27 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Seattle WA
215 PM PDT Thu Jun 24 2021

.SYNOPSIS...A strong upper ridge will build over the region through
the weekend. Expect record-breaking heat peaking Sunday and Monday.
Some marine air will bring down temperatures into the middle of next
week--especially along the coast.

&&

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SUNDAY/...Coastal stratus was still
hugging the coastline this afternoon but the marine layer will be
shallow Friday morning. Areas of morning low clouds might make to
Shelton and down the Strait of Juan de Fuca, but the clouds will
probably will not make it into the I-5 corridor. If any clouds do
make it very far inland, they'll burn off quickly and Friday marks
the beginning of the warmup into the weekend.

High temps on Friday will not be especially interesting, but it will
be the first rather warm day so for simplicity we will just start
the excessive heat warning as we fully expect the heat to build
through the weekend. Saturday afternoon will see new record daily
high temps easily set across the interior of Western Washington. In
fact, the high temp Saturday afternoon at Seatac might edge out the
warmest it has ever been in June across 75 years of data at the
airport!

Sunday will be a little brutal for Western Washingtonians not used
to the heat as we challenge all time high temp--at least here in
Seattle. The coast and areas near the Strait of Juan de Fuca and
Islands will also be hot on Sunday so there's a chance that the
excessive heat warning will be extended to those areas too for
Sunday--although zones that are close to the cold salt water ought
to stay a good ten degrees below the warm spots away from the waters
so areas left out for now might be a candidate for a lesser heat
advisory.

I won't belabor 500mb heights or the 1000-500mb thickness, or even
the 850mb temps which will be exceptionally warm. Stay in the shade--
hydrate, rinse, repeat. We are lucky in this corner of the country
that we don't have the humidity that they suffer through each summer
back east. 19

.LONG TERM /MONDAY THROUGH THURSDAY/...The coast is likely to see 5
to 15 degrees of cooling on Monday from their peak temps on Sunday
as shallow marine air reaches the beaches and gradients turn
onshore. The little ejecting upper short wave that develops into a
576dm low moving north along 130w on Monday will help to send a cool
misty southerly surge of fog and low clouds north along the Pacific
beaches--probably around Monday morning, but possibly as early as
Sunday night. As that occurs, the coast will begin its cooling
trend.

It is pretty standard for the interior and I-5 corridor temps to
peak as the coast starts to cool and for Monday afternoon the
interior of Western Washington will see peak heat. The forecast
shows that highs are likely to range from the 80s at the ocean
beaches on Monday to the 90s near the inland waters (just a little
breeze off the water will make a huge difference). Naturally there
can be quite a range in the islands and along the Strait--sitting
under an umbrella near the icy salt water can easily be ten degrees
cooler than just a mile away from the water. Our forecasts do not
really have the resolution to discern the beach from a mile away
very well and for most folks I'm afraid highs will be in a range of
100-110 degrees along the I-5 corridor and east into the foothills
and valleys of the Cascades.

So, Monday should be the peak of the heat wave in Seattle and 10-15
degrees of moderation into Tuesday is a very good bet. We have a
forecast for Seatac on Monday of 104 'cooling' down to 91 on Tuesday
doesn't seem sufficient to me, but we will take what we can get.
Looking out to Wed and Thu--high temps are likely to have range from
around 70 at the coastal beaches to the mid 80s and lower 90s in the
interior.

Finally, nighttime low temperatures will also be rather warm during
the peak of the heat--especially Sunday night: Urban heat islands
will only slowly cool down through the 80s and bottom out in the 70s
so that will be a little rough. Have your fans and damp towels at
the ready if you don't have air conditioning and take care of
yourself and check on your elderly neighbors--we just aren't used to
this in Western Washington. That said, we are very lucky we don't
have high humidity that so much of the rest of the country deals
with back east every summer, but since many folks still do not have
AC, there will certainly be heat-related health stress for some area
residents. 19
