.SYNOPSIS...
High pressure is centered north of the region with an area of
low pressure developing over the nations mid section. The area
of low pressure is expected to track to our south later in the
week and will be in a favorable position to produce an
accumulating snow for parts of the region Thursday night and
Friday.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TODAY/...
As of 700 PM EST Wednesday...
No Forecast updates from afternoon package in the near term.

No changes really in the near term forecast aside from some
adjustments to cloud cover for the western half of the CWA:
previous forecast was slightly more optimistic than what's
playing out, with clouds hanging out all the way up to the Blue
Ridge with no signal of budging until starting near midnight.

Quiet conditions still expected tomorrow ahead of a low pressure
system that will bring active weather Thursday night into
Friday. Low clouds should start to increase tomorrow
afternoon/evening starting from the SW in the NC mountains.

Previous Near Term Discussions...
As of 200 PM EST Wednesday...

Relatively quiet weather is anticipated in the near term with
near seasonal temperatures.

Drier air continues to entrain into the area this evening as an
occluded low wobbles eastward off the northeast coast.
Eventually, this low moves far enough way from the area tonight
to allow surface high pressure and ridging aloft to enter the
region. Low clouds will wither away tonight only to be replaced
by high clouds on Thursday. Our next weather-maker tracks across
the Gulf states Thursday, but does not bring any precipitation
to the area until Thursday night.

.SHORT TERM /TONIGHT THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT/...
As of 215 PM EST Wednesday...

Winter storm chances are increasing for Thursday night into
Friday, especially for locations along and south of US 460.

Thursday night, closed upper-level low centered over the
central Gulf States, with a surface low centered over central
Alabama. This low will continue to track east overnight
Thursday, nearing the NC/SC coastline by Friday morning.

Big question that still has not been 100 percent resolved is
how far north the precipitation shield will extend. Right now,
the global models seem to be on the dryer side with the northern
extent of the precipitation barely reaching the VA/NC border.
Hi-res models are showing a lot more expansive amount of
precipitation, with some solutions even getting snow north of US
460. At the moment, it's hard to shy away from the higher
resolution guidance for the fact they can pick up on these finer
details better than the coarser global models. Going with
pattern recognition with the location of the progged low
pressure track, this will normally have precipitation extend
well into Virginia. Snow likely to begin in NW NC before sunrise
on Friday, slowly expanding north and east as the morning
progresses. Upper-level low will be slow to move and as it
pivots across the area, expect a deformation band to setup
somewhere over NC/southern VA. This will be slow to move and
precipitation will slowly erode from west to east Friday
evening. Locations under any mesoscale-type banding could
receive higher snowfall amounts, but pinpointing where such
features exactly setup is virtually impossible this far out from
the event.

With that said, bumped up snowfall amounts especially for NW NC
and far SW VA. Also increased snowfall amounts for areas along
and south of US 460 where model guidance has been advertising
increasing amounts as well. There is still quite a bit of
uncertainty with this system and snow totals will likely change
(up or down) as newer guidance arrives. Will be doing a Winter
Storm Watch for the NC High Country, east into the NC foothills,
as well as a few southern VA counties along the NC/VA border.
Will monitor trends for the need for any expansion of headlines
this evening and overnight.

Snow amounts appear to be in the 3-6" range for the highest
elevations along the southern Blue Ridge of Virginia and NW
North Carolina, with some possibility of localized higher
amounts. Away from the higher elevations and south of US 460,
totals of 1-3" with the higher amounts closer to the mountains
are possible.

Friday night, low exits into the Atlantic. Expect clearing
skies through Saturday and much warmer temperatures. Mid to
upper 30s west, mid 40s east.

.LONG TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 130 PM EST Wednesday...

Some wintry weather possible again for the start of next week,
though confidence is not high on timing or amounts.

Ensemble guidance shows an ample supply of short wave energy
rotating through the upper flow to suppress riding and help keep
a mean upper trof over the eastern US into the first part of
next week. Expect this will generally keep temperatures on the
cool side of normal with a better chance for moderation toward
the middle of next week.

Overall pattern will maintain an active storm track to our
south and allow a system to move out of the Gulf of Mexico and
slide through the southeastern US. Anticipate we will be on the
northern edge of the precipitation shield for the early part of
next week as the system slides by. Ensembles generally
indicating a progressive system with deepening of the low not
occurring until the system starts pulling away from the mid
Atlantic coast, and anomalies are not showing signals that would
support a significantly more robust solution. However, timing
varies considerably between suites of guidance and this detracts
from confidence this far out in time. Will be watching
evolution of features closely in the days ahead to see if any
trends start pointing toward greater impacts from winter weather
early next week.

.AVIATION /06Z THURSDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 100 AM EST Thursday...

VFR conditions still expected to persist east of the Blue Ridge
for LYH, and DAN with ROA teetering on the MVFR cloud boundary
which envelops areas west of the Blue Ridge. This low level
moisture is expected to persist through at least this morning,
impacting BCB, LWB and BLF and potential for IFR cigs at BLF.
By afternoon, the low level winds are expected to come around to
the northeast and eventually east-southeast. This will help
break up the low level clouds over the mountains.

VFR conditions expected for all sites during the afternoon.
Mid/Upper level moisture will be on the increase ahead of our
next storm system, so anticipate overcast conditions AOA 10kft
as we transition into the overnight Thursday night. All
precipitation associated with the next storm system is expected
to hold off until after midnight Thursday night.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

A deep closed low pressure area will move into the southeastern
U.S. Thursday Night-Friday bringing precipitation, some winter
precipitation, along with potentially IFR or worse ceilings and
visibilities. Dry weather is expected Saturday and Sunday. There
is the chance for Sub-VFR conditions Monday in rain and snow
showers.
