.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure deepening as it moves into New England will push an
Arctic cold front through the Mid Atlantic region today bringing
falling temperatures, gusty wind and mountain snow showers.
Another low will strengthen along the Gulf Coast on Thursday
then track to the Mid Atlantic coast by Friday. This will bring
widespread winter weather to our region Wednesday night into
Thursday night.

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 225 AM EST Tuesday...

Turning colder and windy today

Low pressure will track from North Carolina to New Jersey this
morning with main batch showers and thunderstorms exiting eastern
sections of Virginia and North Carolina early. Models takes the band
of showers in West Virgina across southeast West Virginia and the
Alleghany Highlands this morning but weakening as it moves
northeast. Expect little precipitation left from this after 12Z/7AM.

A second low and Arctic cold front cross reaches the central
and southern Appalachians this morning and will be well east of
Lynchburg and Danville by the end of the day. Temperatures will
drop amd winds will increase behind this front. As the winds
turn to the west, then northwest upslope snow showers will
develop along the western slopes of the central Appalachians.
The west to northwest winds increasing downslope flow and
subsidence east of the Blue Ridge along with a drying air mass
will clear out clouds this afternoon. Not soon enough to
counteract the cold air advection.

By tonight, even the shallow low level moisture and weakening
upslope will limit any snow showers. Winds stay mixed and cold
air advection not as strong as today. HiRes guidance for lows
for tonight should be reasonable.

.SHORT TERM /WEDNESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY NIGHT/...
As of 430 AM EST Tuesday...

Cold high pressure will move from the Ohio Valley Wednesday to the
Mid- Atlantic Wednesday evening, then wedge south into the Carolinas
overnight into Thursday morning. Meanwhile, an area of low pressure
will track across eastern Texas and the southern Mississippi Valley
Wednesday, then over the southern Appalachains Wednesday night into
Thursday.

Initially, the atmosphere will be cold enough to support snow
Wednesday night, especially areas north of Highway 460 where the
wedge will be deeper. As the low enters the Tennessee Valley and
southern Appalachians early Thursday morning, strong warm air
advection will have snow transitioning to a wintry mix of sleet,
freezing rain and rain. Confidence is high is our climatic CAD areas
to issue a Winter Storm Watch from midnight Thursday to midnight
Friday. Areal expansion of this Watch is possible.

A series of strong short waves along with Gulf moisture is expected
to bring up to two inches of rain to the area Wednesday night into
Thursday. Since the ground remains soaked from events over the past
week, flooding will be an additional threat going into Thursday and
Thursday night.

With an easterly flow developing, uniform temperatures in the upper
30s to lower 40s can be expected Wednesday. Dew points Wednesday
evening will be in the upper teens to lower 20s. As precipitation
falls overnight, evaporative cooling will likely bring temperatures
down into the upper 20s. Temperatures may not move much Thursday
morning, but if the wedge breaks, highs for the day will range in
the 30s.

.LONG TERM /FRIDAY THROUGH MONDAY/...
As of 230 PM EST Monday...

Mountain snow showers, gusty winds, and cold air will persist
through Friday and Saturday.

Cold air behind the departing low pressure system will arrive by
Friday morning. Winds will become gusty from the northwest, and
upslope snow showers should crank up along a line from Boone to
Lewisburg. Meanwhile, conditions should become dry across the
Piedmont. The ECMWF and the GFS models agree on keeping the gusty
winds and mountain snow showers through Friday night into early
Saturday. Temperatures were steered toward the colder side of
guidance, and there may be a few locations testing wind chill
advisory criteria by Saturday morning. High pressure will build
overhead on Saturday afternoon, which should allow the gusty winds
and the mountain snow showers to gradually diminish.

With high pressure in control by Saturday night, our weather will
finally turn tranquil after an extremely active and wet week. Sunday
should see the flow turn around to the southwest, so temperatures
could turn somewhat milder as the upper level pattern flattens. By
Sunday night, a shortwave trough will cross over the central Plains
and approach the Mid Atlantic by Monday morning. A weak low pressure
system associated with this trough should bring the next chance of
precipitation. This system should exit offshore on Monday evening.

.AVIATION /10Z TUESDAY THROUGH SATURDAY/...
As of 1250 AM EST Tuesday...

Light to moderate rain will continue to exit southwest Virginia
and western North Carolina early this morning. Predominantly
IFR to LIFR cigs and MVFR vsbys especially out over the
mountains as our system moves moves through. Any icing concerns
are confined to the Blue Ridge.

Low level wind shear will remain an issue through the early
morning as the low level jet core passes the region.

Conditions will improve today as a cold front crosses the area
and brings winds around to the west. Wind gusts of 20 to 30
knots are likely at TAFs sites by afternoon. As winds increase,
fog will dissipate and ceilings will lift, especially east of
the Blue Ridge with downsloping and subsidence.

Some upslope snow showers possible today west of KLWB and KBLF
but do not look to provide any major impacts at these TAF
locations at this time. VFR cigs/vsbys expected at KROA, KLYH,
and KDAN this afternoon.

Above average confidence for wind and weather.
Average confidence on ceilings and visibility and timing of
improvement.

Extended Aviation Discussion...

Weather pattern is forecast to remain unsettled through Friday
with high threat for winter precipitation Wed night-Friday as
Arctic air surges further southeast into the eastern United
States. Generally MVFR or worse conditions expected through most
of the period.

.EQUIPMENT...
As of 445 AM EST Tuesday...

The KFCX radar will be down through about Thursday, February
18 for the replacement of a generator as well as other
electrical components powering the facility.

In addition, the Richlands NOAA weather radio broadcast will be
off the air through at least today, February 16 due to phone
line problems.

There is a low probability for widespread hazardous weather. sOME
light pockets of freezing rain are likely along the Blue Ridge
Parkway overnight into Tuesday morning. Motorists traveling in this
area should use caution due to slick conditions.

Winter weather conditions are expected across much of the region
