What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this winter weather advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Charleston, WV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this winter weather advisory went out at Jan 30, 3:38 AM EST, 5 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jan 30, 3:38 AM EST, 5 minutes before
AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Charleston WV
338 AM EST Sat Jan 30 2021

.SYNOPSIS...
Clear and cold this morning with high pressure in control.
Winter storm tonight and Sunday impacts portions of the region.
Light snow likely Monday through Tuesday areawide.

&&

.NEAR TERM /THROUGH TONIGHT/...
As of 335 AM Saturday...

Transient high pressure will maintain quiet and dry conditions
for the first half of the period before active weather returns
late this evening. Until then, however, first notable changes
will be an increase in mid and upper level clouds by daybreak
while remaining dry in the lowest levels of the atmosphere.

A disturbance currently undergoing cyclogenesis this morning
will eject out of the central CONUS and encroach on the Central
Appalachians for the second half of the weekend. By the late
afternoon and early evening timeframe the first wave of
precipitation will stream in from the south along a warm front.
Wetbulbing will gradually chip away at the aforementioned low
level dry air, which will cool and moisten the thermal profile
to allow a changeover from rain to snow showers, especially
north of the I-64 corridor during teh first half of the
overnight.

A brief dry slot will attempt to scoot through around midnight
tonight before filling back in beneath efficient low level
moisture from the southwest. The center of circulation pivots
through the Ohio Valley tonight and into Sunday, maintaining
moderate to heavy showers through the conclusion of the near
term period.

A hodgepodge of weather types will exist within this event. As
alluded to above, rain will reach our southwestern zones by
early this evening and transition over to snow as evaporative
cooling takes shape. Surface temperatures in portions of Central
and Northern West Virginia will be cold enough that onset
precipitation along the front will start off as snow, but may
briefly switch over to rain or freezing rain in the wake of the
warm frontal passage. Plummeting temperatures overnight will
aid in showers changing back to snow before warm advection will
prompt another transition back to rain during the predawn hours
early Sunday morning. Will also continue to note the potential
for ice accumulations of over a tenth of an inch with this
storm, primarily within the warm advection environment that
plows through Sunday morning.

In terms of winter headlines, the newest addition with this
forecast package was electing to hoist a Winter Weather Advisory
for southeast Ohio starting this evening until Sunday morning
for snow accumulations of up to 2 inches. I've refrained from
making any changes to the Winter Storm Watch for now along our
mountain zones after collaborating with neighboring offices
about the uncertainty of how much of a role the dry slot could
play in diminishing snow and ice accumulations.

&&

.SHORT TERM /SUNDAY THROUGH TUESDAY/...
As of 245 AM Saturday...

The first 6 hours of the the short term period Sunday morning
into Sunday afternoon will be crucial in dictating the overall
snow amounts for some areas, primarily southeast Ohio, where
snow could be moderate at times, but warm advection and a
transition to rain is ultimately expected. By around 16Z
Sunday, all of the lowlands should be near or above 0C at
925/850mb with surface temperatures pushing upwards into the
middle/upper 30s in that area. This precipitation persists as
rain until the cold front comes through and the coastal low
becomes dominant into Sunday night with a transition back to
snow showers for the lowlands. The mountains will be a different
story, especially the eastern facing slopes on the far eastern
boundary of the CWA. This region will not be subject to nearly
as efficient low level warm air advection with cold air damming
and ESE upsloping at 925mb. Having to hang on to a freezing rain
potential for this area, well illustrated in forecast
soundings, but again, the warm nose will disappear around 08Z
Monday, and snow showers return.

Cold air will settle into the middle Ohio Valley/central
Appalachians for Monday and Tuesday, with enough moisture depth
to keep scattered snow showers in the mix all the way into
Tuesday afternoon. At that point, but low level saturation
thickness at -8C or colder should erode enough to end this
chance, and have no POPs Tuesday evening into Tuesday night.
Will need to watch the Monday night/Tuesday time frame carefully
as the low level streamlines may orient such as to bring a fetch
of moisture off Lake Erie into the mountains for some enhanced
upslope. This is currently not depicted in the forecast due to a
lower confidence of this setup, but it bears watching, for sure.
In the end, it would likely just necessitate some modest
accumulations whereas now the forecast for any 6 hour period in
the snow shower phase of this winter system is less than one
half inch of snow.

&&

.LONG TERM /TUESDAY NIGHT THROUGH FRIDAY/...
As of 245 AM Saturday...

Significant warm up for the end of the week in progressive
ridging aloft and the development of a mid latitude system off
the lee of the Rockies. This system will take a hard track
through the Great Lakes, west of our area, keeping the region
firmly entrenched in the warm sector. Strong cold front/cool
down into the weekend.

&&

.AVIATION /08Z SATURDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY/...
As of 1220 AM Saturday...

Mid and upper level cloud deck slowly sink down ceiling heights
through the day today ahead of next disturbance, but remains
VFR through the current Zulu day.

The leading edge of a warm front will spark the onset of
deteriorating flight rules late this evening, especially within
a brief period of moderate to heavy snow showers. Northern
terminals may sneak out of sub-VFR conditions within this TAF
period, but quickly after 06Z plummet to IFR or worse as more
widespread SN/RA showers engulf the region.

Winds generally remain light and variable through the period.
The only exception could be BKW, where gusts of 15-20KTs become
possible late tonight and into the overnight period in the wake
of the warm front.

FORECAST CONFIDENCE AND ALTERNATE SCENARIOS THROUGH 06Z SUNDAY...

FORECAST CONFIDENCE: High.

ALTERNATE SCENARIOS: Timing of onset of light snow at HTS, CRW,
and BKW may differ from TAF late tonight.
