Area Forecast Discussion

.SHORT TERM...Today through Friday

Showers and isolated thunderstorms will continue across Sweetwater
County this morning, moving toward the northeast into Natrona
County. Model trends have this activity ending by daybreak. This
activity will redevelop this afternoon and evening, with strong
gusty winds being the main hazard. A shortwave trough will continue
to make its way toward the Cowboy State today. Dry air will be in
place in the lower levels, resulting in inverted-V soundings and
relative humidity values below 15 percent from southern Lincoln
to Natrona County. Wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph will occur in the
mountains and the Wind Corridor, outside of the expected
convection. These winds will likely add to the strong wind
potential with the convection. Red Flag Warnings will be issued
for southern portions and Natrona County, as a result. Elevated
fire conditions will also be in place across areas east of the
Divide, but either winds or RH will not reach criteria. Isolated
showers and thunderstorms will be possible across the north this
afternoon and evening, as the trough approaches and moves over the
area. The best moisture and instability will be outside of the
forecast area over far eastern and northeastern WY. These
conditions may be in place over far northern portions of Johnson
County. Strong winds and large hail will be possible with any
storm that moves into this area. Convection will end from west to
east this evening, as the trough moves over the area, ending
across the area by 06Z.

A broad longwave trough will develop over western Canada Thursday
night into Friday morning, with the trough axis and jet energy
moving over the PACNW. A more diffluent flow pattern will be in
place over the Cowboy State, in advance of this system. Similar
conditions will be in place across the forecast area, with critical
RH values occurring once again from southern Lincoln County into
Johnson County. Red Flag Warnings will remain in effect across the
south and Natrona County, while Fire Weather Watches will be issued
for Johnson County, the southern end of the Bighorns and the Wind
River Basin. Any convection will be confined to far northern
portions of the forecast area, as the associated cold front
approaches the area from the north. The cold front is not expected
to enter northern WY until Friday evening.

.LONG TERM...Friday night through Wednesday

The start of the period at 00Z Saturday has a broad trough
centered over MT and the associated cold front moving through
areas east of the Divide through the overnight hours Friday night.
While the GFS and ECMWF are in pretty good agreement on the
placement of this feature, the trough itself does not have a sharp
base to it. This trough is projected to move through the area and
be east of the forecast area by 00Z Sunday. The main impacts to
the area would be some cooler temperatures and windy conditions,
as the gradient remains fairly tight over the area. Precipitation
looks to be mainly confined to the far northern areas. Starting
between 00Z and 12Z Sunday, a dry period looks to be in store for
around 48 hours or so with a zonal flow followed by some westerly
to southwesterly flow as a high over the Four Corners region
remains in place. During the day Tuesday there looks to be
somewhat of a transition. The GFS and ECMWF differ over the
strength of the next trough to the west of the Cowboy State. At
00Z Wednesday, the ECMWF has a deep trough over eastern WA/OR.
The GFS has it a bit further west, but not as strong. As this
feature moves through the state Wednesday, there is the potential
for some precipitation. By 00Z Thursday, the ECMWF has more
moisture with a fetch of monsoonal moisture bringing precipitation
into the southern portions of the forecast area. The GFS is more
spotty with the feature.

As far as the temperatures, Saturday looks to be the coolest day of
the period with both Sunday and Monday warmer than the previous day.
Temperatures could get back into the 90s for Monday and Tuesday
and then look to cool a bit on Wednesday.

Widely scattered showers and storms will continue over the south
through 12Z with some of this activity moving across Natrona County
through 14Z. VFR conditions will occur at the terminal sites.

Widely scattered showers and storms will develop by 18Z in
Sweetwater County and spread northeast into Natrona County after
21Z. KRKS and KCPR may see showers or storms until about 02Z. In
the far north, isolated showers and storms will occur after 19Z,
through 02Z. At this time, the activity may stay north of KCOD.
Showers and storms will be out of the area by 06Z Friday. Many
terminals will see a gusty wind from late morning Thursday through
the early evening.

Issued AT 242 AM MDT Thu Aug 26 2021

Showers are expected to end across the area by daybreak this
morning. Critical fire weather conditions will return from zone
277 to 280 this afternoon, as relative humidity values fall below
15 percent and west to southwest wind gusts of 25 to 35 mph occur
in the mountains and the aforementioned zones. Similar conditions
will return and spread into zones 281, 283 and 285 Friday. Red
Flag Warnings and Fire Weather Watches are now in effect,
accordingly. Isolated to scattered showers and thunderstorms will
redevelop between zones 279 and 280 this afternoon, while isolated
showers and thunderstorms will be possible across the north. This
activity will end from west to east this evening through midnight.
Strong wind gusts will be the main threat from this activity.
Strong to possibly severe thunderstorms will also be possible
over northern portions of zone 281.
