Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 1006 AM MST Fri Dec 3 2021 .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night A weak cold front will drop southward through areas East of the Divide through today. It has little moisture to work with though. I can't completely rule out a few sprinkles in and near the mountains, but nothing impactful. It will knock temperatures down several degrees though. We will still be well above normal, but record highs will be less likely. It will also decrease the wind as well. Dry weather should hold through Saturday. The next, more potent front that will put and end to the mild temperatures will arrive following it's passage. It does appear to be a bit slower, so we removed the POPs for during the day on Saturday. The front will then drop north to south Saturday night into Sunday. It will spread some snow showers as it passes. This front has more moisture to work with, but not a ton. There could be some light accumulation, especially in the mountains, but amounts still look sub advisory right now. But that is not the main concern. The main concern looks to be potentially high wind. The pressure gradient will begin to tighten up later Friday night as the front approaches. Most models show the 700 millibar winds increasing to over 50 knots across much of the area Saturday afternoon. Some favored areas, like the Absarokas, show 700 millibar winds as high as 70 knots. Combine this with good downward forcing from the right front quadrant of an 120 to 140 knot jet streak, high winds look like a good possibility Saturday night and into Sunday as well. Places favored in pre frontal conditions, like the Cody Foothills and possibly from the Green Mountains through Casper would see it first Saturday evening. Then on Sunday, in areas favored by the post frontal environment of cold advection and northwest flow. This will especially the case in Johnson County but possibly even in places like Sweetwater County and the Wind River Basin. We held off on watches for now, but some may be issued later today. The front will also usher in much colder air for Sunday. It will only drop temperatures down to near seasonal levels, but given the abnormally warm pattern, it will be a slap in the face for most people. All snow should end by sunset Sunday. There will then be a brief lull Sunday evening. The next system, this once Pacific in origin, will begin to approach the area. The models have slowed this system as well, not surprising given the long range fast bias of Pacific systems. We did reduce POPs for later Sunday night. The GFS is especially slow, holding any snow off until Monday. Still time to watch it though. .LONG TERM...(Monday through Thursday) Issued at 158 AM MST Fri Dec 3 2021 At 12Z Monday a trough is progged to be in the Vancouver area. This trough is then expected to dig into the Intermountain West during the day Monday. This system is now expected to pull across the northern Rockies late Monday night into Tuesday morning. The deterministic GFS has continued the trend of splitting the trough with the main energy remaining south of the area. The Canadian has also gone with this splitting solution. The 00Z deterministic ECMWF is showing hints of a splitting trough as it pulls across the Rockies. A moist isentropic upglide and a mainly westerly orographic flow still looks to result in snow breaking out over the far west Monday morning. The snow is expected to expand Monday afternoon across much of the area along and west of the Divide including Sweeetwater County, and become heavier. The snow is then expected to pull east of the Divide late Monday afternoon into Monday evening. The mid-level trough axis then pulls across the west Monday night and then across the rest of the area Tuesday morning. The trend is to taper off much of the snow from northwest/west to east/southeast late Monday night into Tuesday morning. The trend of a splitting trough is shutting of the snow quicker which in turn is decreasing snow amounts. Overall model precipitation amounts (melted snow equivalent) have decreased by around a quarter of an inch, with amounts generally between 0.30 and 0.60 from 12Z Monday through 12Z Tuesday over the far west. Ensemble data for Jackson right now are showing between 2 and 4 inches of snow during this time frame. Areas east of the Divide should see more spotty and light precipitation, with most of the precip in the form of snow. The overall the message is this system is looking less intense with less impacts, but still could need a few winter highlights over the far west. There looks to be a lull in the snow Tuesday afternoon and Tuesday night, before a relatively low-amplitude trough in the northwest flow pulls across the area in the Wednesday and Wednesday night. Much of the snow right now looks to occur over the west Wednesday. The snow remains over the west Wednesday night, but a rain possibly snow spills east of the Divide during that time frame. Models then diverge significantly by Thursday on the upper-air pattern, and the associated weather. Temperatures will be seasonal cold for much of the week over the west, and at least through Tuesday over the east with a possible warm up Wednesday and Thursday. && .AVIATION...(For the 18Z TAFS through 18Z Saturday afternoon) Issued at 1005 AM MST Fri Dec 3 2021 VFR conditions will continue to exist across all TAF sites through the period. There will be some passing mid to high level CIGS through the period otherwise quiet. Increasing and lowering CIGS will occur after 06Z/Saturday. CIGS will remain VFR through the period. Terminals will see light and variable winds through the term; however, wind will be increasing toward the latter half of the period ahead of a cold front that's expected to move through the area late Saturday into Sunday.
