Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Riverton WY 438 AM MDT Fri Jun 4 2021 .SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night Being a member of Generation X, I was a teenager in the 80s. And I remember a party song from that period called "Hot, Hot, Hot!". And this will be the main weather story of the day as this will be the hottest day of the period. Many places will likely see record high temperatures set. A few spots could even see the temperature make it to the century mark. And these highs would be notable. If it makes it to 100 in Greybull, it would be the earliest 100 degree high temperature ever. If occurs at Worland, it would tie the earliest 100 degree temperature. The other concern is convection. A weak boundary is currently found across southern Montana and a few light showers are found there. This will likely sag southward somewhat today and bring a few showers and thunderstorms to northern Wyoming this afternoon and evening. The main threat from any storm would be strong winds, given the large dew point depressions and inverted V forecast soundings. We could even see some of those "Little Green Blobs" at times, innocent looking showers that produce strong wind gusts. Most of these showers and storms should end after sunset but a few may linger until after midnight. Another cold front will clip northern Wyoming on Saturday. The main effect will be to tighten the pressure gradient up and bring some gusty winds to much of the area. This will likely lead to elevated fire weather across a good portion of the area. As for any convection, the best chance may be across southern Wyoming where there will be some additional upper level forcing from the right rear quadrant of a jet streak. The marginal risk across northern Wyoming may be a bit over done though, as most models keeping the thunderstorms over Montana. For now, we have kept storms across the south. With more cloud cover through, temperatures will be somewhat cooler, although still well above normal. By Sunday, heights will begin to rise again as ridging builds across the desert southwest. A couple of models have some isolated convection across the south, but we did not have enough confidence to include it. Much drier air will move in and with a gusty breeze continuing, it will likely be another day of elevated fire weather. .LONG TERM...Monday through Friday A weak cold front is expected to wash out or retreat northward as a warm front Monday as a shortwave trough over extreme southern Alberta pushes northeast into south-central Saskatchewan by 00Z Tuesday. At the same time an upper low/trough will push towards the Pacific Northwest, and a compact low begins to pull into southern California. Dry conditions are expected Monday. The aforementioned low across California pulls quickly northeast across the forecast area Tuesday. This could result in some convection...mainly across the northwest. At the same time the trough over the Pacific Northwest becomes a more amplified trough just off the West Coast. This trough is then progged by models to swing northeast across the West/N. Rockies Wednesday and Thursday with a gradual weakening trend. Most of the dynamics and thus precipitation looks to remain mainly north/northwest of the forecast area both Wednesday and Thursday. Dry conditions are then expected Friday. Temperatures will remain well above average for early-mid June which should result in little or snow below 10000 and possibly 10500 feet. Rivers and stream will be closely monitored. && .AVIATION...(For the 12Z TAFS through 12Z Saturday morning) Issued at 437 AM MDT Fri Jun 4 2021 Isolated late-day thunderstorms over the north could impact the KCOD terminal. VFR conditions will prevail across all TAF sites through the period. Light and variable winds can be expected at all terminals before picking up across all TAF sites after 18Z. Wind gust could exceed 25 knots at sites KBPI, KCOD, KLND, KPNA, KRIW AND KRKS. Site KWRL could see a few gusts up to 20 knots. Those winds are expected to diminish after 03Z. A few low clouds may sneak into the region after 18Z and sticking around through the period. && .FIRE WEATHER... A weak system will move toward northern Wyoming and bring isolated showers and thunderstorms in the afternoon. The main threat from any shower or thunderstorms will be strong wind.
