.SYNOPSIS...
Plan on dry and pleasant conditions this weekend with chilly
mornings. Prime weather for winterizing homes and irrigation
systems. A cold system is slated for Monday with breezy winds and
chances for snow showers across the Sierra and western Nevada. A
hard freeze remains likely for much of the region overnight Monday
and Tuesday. Dry and warmer conditions gradually return later next
week.

&&

.SHORT TERM...(Tonight through Monday evening)

A dry, stable northerly upper flow increases over CA and western NV
through today before shifting more west-northwest into Sunday.  Nice
seasonal temperatures and light winds will continue on through what
remains of this weekend. A much colder low pressure system will
begin to influence the region starting Sunday evening and bring
brief periods of rain/snow showers into the Sierra and western NV
through Monday. Afternoon highs will warm into the 50s and 60s,
perhaps into the low 70s for some western NV valleys Sunday
afternoon.

Later Sunday evening the next upstream batch of weather will drop
into NE-California/NW-Nevada as a colder low pressure system pushes
south through the Pacific Northwest from British Columbia.  The cold
front with this system (Inside Slider) will continue south and east
across W-Nevada and the Great Basin, bringing gusty northerly winds,
rain/snow showers, and colder winter-like temperatures to the region.
NBM and short term ensemble model guidance continue to predict gusty
conditions (30-40 mph) across the frontal boundary as it spreads
showers into the Sierra and W-Nevada and later Sunday evening
through Monday.

* Snow/freezing levels will also drop sharply over the region as
  the front pushes quickly south over the Sierra and east into
  western Nevada. Some simulations also indicate the likelihood
  that precipitation falling over the Reno-Carson Metro area
  during the Monday AM commute will have already transitioned to
  mostly snow showers. But any accompanying snow bands will be
  quick moving and narrow in extent due to limited moisture and
  forcing aloft over the region. Therefore, any snow accumulations
  will be marginal at best ranging from a trace over most lower
  valleys with the higher foothills possibly picking up almost an
  inch of slushy snow. The potential for higher accumulations lies
  further south and east across western Nevada where snowfall
  totals could reach up to 4 inches at higher elevation areas.

* Dependent upon the availability of sufficient moisture behind the
  front, some upslope snow showers are also possible over the
  eastern Sierra late Monday afternoon and evening. With lake water
  temperatures still in the mid 50s to low 60s, the favorable
  combination of northerly winds and cold-air instability further
  increases the potential for light lake effect snow bands downwind
  of Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake overnight Monday into Tuesday AM.

* There is higher confidence in a potentially strong east to
  northeast wind event along the Sierra Crest and in the Tahoe Basin
  Monday night into Tuesday AM. Gusts over the Sierra ridges could
  reach 50-60 mph plus as high surface pressure builds in company
  with strong cold air advection, over the Great Basin. Some of
  these winds will also mix down into the lower elevations of Tahoe
  Basin, perhaps 25-35 mph adding to choppy conditions across its
  western shore.

* Behind the front, a brisk and cold northerly wind pushes into the
  region Monday afternoon. Afternoon highs Monday could drop as much
  as 20-25 degrees from the day before with hard freezes a
  possibility in urbanized areas Tuesday AM, with a repeat
  performance Wednesday AM as well. - Amanda

.Long Term (Tuesday Onward)...

Overall a relatively quiet weather scenario for mid to late week
with the cold trough exiting eastward and ridging aloft taking its
place. This break in the weather will be welcome ahead of what
appears to be an active pattern setting up for the following week.

* COLD TEMPS: Cold and dry airmass will set the stage for the
  coldest readings of the autumn season thus far, especially Tuesday
  morning with high confidence in widespread hard freezes even in
  urban centers. ECMWF EFI showing -0.8 to -0.9 for temps Tuesday
  which is a solid signal for unusual cold for this time of year.
  Just a touch warmer Wednesday morning so we'll continue the Freeze
  Watch for both mornings as a heads-up to what should be the end of
  the growing season for everyone.

* CLASSIC FALL: Due to a cool but light easterly low level flow,
  we're expecting a very gradual warming Wednesday through the
  weekend with appreciable diurnal temperature spreads. Friday
  through Sunday look amazing with highs near 70 in lower
  elevations and 60s in the mountains, coupled with crisp mornings.

* ACTIVE WEEK TWO: A healthy percentage of ECMWF and GFS ensemble
  members are showing a rather active pattern setting up for much of
  the West starting around Monday 18th or Tuesday 19th. Question is
  how far south into CA and NV will this storm track get, so
  predictability and confidence are mixed this far out. But enough
  members show appreciable precip and even some lee-side high wind
  scenarios for our region to warrant attention. This pattern is
  something to keep an eye on for our friends in mountain
  communities that may be trying to finish outdoor projects before
  "winter sets in"...

weekend. Early morning fog is still possible Sunday morning over
some Sierra valleys. Any fog that forms over higher Sierra valley
will burn off by mid-morning 16-18Z.

A strong cold front is forecast to sweep through the region late Sunday
night and Monday. Expect gusty winds, LLWS, and lower freezing levels.
Periods of rain & snow moving through the region could lower Sierra
terminal conditions to MVFR or briefly IFR during the early morning
