.SYNOPSIS...
Low pressure developing over the Pacific Northwest this weekend
will drop south along the West Coast for much of next week. This
will result in breezy and dry conditions with temperatures cooling
from well above normal this weekend to near or even below normal
at times next week.

.DISCUSSION...
A large scale trough will be dropping south into the Pacific
Northwest and northern Rockies this weekend and then amplify near
the West Coast Mon-Wed. The position of this trough will keep a
very dry southwest to west flow over the Sierra and western NV,
with breezy to windy conditions each afternoon and evening through
Wednesday. Sustained winds 15-25 mph with gusts 30-40 mph will be
common and this will create choppy lake waters and strong gusty
winds for activities in the Sierra backcountry (in addition to
fire weather and aviation concerns as outlined in the other
sections of this forecast discussion). Blowing dust is also
possible downwind of the dry basin sinks. Temperatures will begin
to cool this weekend but still be well above normal. The biggest
cooldown occurs Mon-Wed when temperatures will be near normal
Monday and even below normal Tuesday and Wednesday.
As far as precipitation, there will be none through early
Wednesday for sure. For Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday night,
there are some scenarios that eject the upper trough as
additional energy drops southward from the Gulf of Alaska into the
eastern Pacific. While moisture is limited, forcing could be
strong enough for a few showers north of I-80. Current national
blend of models puts a few showers near the Oregon border
Wednesday afternoon, but these may need to be expanded a bit if
confidence increases.
Beyond Wednesday, some of the WPC clusters along with the 00Z
GFS/ECMWF suggest another trough dropping down along the coast by
the end of next weekend. Dry and mild conditions with more
typical breezes Thu-Fri could be followed by additional periods of
gusty winds next weekend.

.AVIATION...
Increased SW-W winds are expected each afternoon-evening from
today through Wednesday. All main terminals can expect gusts of
25-35 kts each day from approximately 21z-04z, with potential for
slightly stronger gusts Monday-Tuesday. These winds will bring
periods of mountain wave turbulence and wind shear. Otherwise, VFR
conditions will prevail for the upcoming week. MJD

...Multi-day, dry and gusty wind event is expected this weekend
through the middle of next week...
...Peak overall wind speeds will be Sunday and Monday with
Fire Weather Watches in effect...
* Today is a "heads-up" day for elevated fire weather concerns as
wind gusts kick up to near 35 mph while afternoon RH drops to
the 7-12% range across much of western NV, with highs again in
the 90s. About 165 cloud to ground lightning strikes were
detected yesterday in parts of Mono, Lyon, Mineral and southern
Churchill counties, in addition to Thursday's lightning
activity over portions of the eastern Sierra, and western-west
central NV. So if any holdover fire starts occurred from this
lightning activity, they would likely show up with this
afternoon's very warm, dry and windy conditions. Standing alone
without the stronger winds anticipated for Sunday and Monday,
multiple sites in western NV are forecast to reach the typical
Red Flag wind and humidity criteria for at least a few hours.
* Fire Weather Watches remain in effect for Sunday and Monday
afternoons-evenings, when the most widespread potential exists
for several hours of wind gusts of 30-40 mph with wind prone
areas around 45 mph in the areas where sufficient dry and cured
fuel conditions are present. Minimum humidity will also be
very low on both days, around 7-12% for lower elevations and
10-20% in the Eastern Sierra, Tahoe Basin, and northeast CA.
Overnight recoveries will be marginal to poor, especially in
western Nevada with most areas only getting up to 30-40%
overnight.
* Gusty winds are projected to persist into Tuesday and
Wednesday, although speeds look to be a little less. Cooler
temperatures return with slightly higher afternoon humidities
especially north of US-50, although elevated fire concerns
would remain present if things get active prior to these days.
* Early season fuel conditions are varied and this multi-day wind
event will tell a lot about the spread potential if any fires
occur. Most local Fire Management officials have deemed their
areas are receptive to new fires, especially under critical
wind and humidity conditions. The main areas of concern are
definitely in the Sierra, Tahoe Basin, Carson Range along the
Sierra Front, and northeast California forests where drought is
creating very dry conditions in the heavy fuels. The lower
elevations of western-west central NV are just becoming
receptive to fire, although sagebrush moistures are only
marginally critical along the northern Sierra Front. In far
northwest Nevada, the sagebrush is still very green, so we will
not be issuing any products for northern Washoe County. MJD
