What forecasters said that day

The local office's own words before this heat advisory went out, as it sent them, from the Iowa Environmental Mesonet's archive of National Weather Service text.

NWS Reno, NV wrote its last area forecast discussion before this heat advisory went out at Jun 14, 3:00 AM PDT, 7 minutes earlier.

Area forecast discussion, Jun 14, 3:00 AM PDT, 7 minutes before
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Reno NV
300 AM PDT Mon Jun 14 2021

.SYNOPSIS...

Gusty winds today will bring periods of choppy lake waters and
elevated fire weather concerns. Winds decrease to more typical
breezes Tuesday then become lighter by midweek. Temperatures will
be above normal this week, warming to record levels later in the
week. A few thunderstorms may develop on the hottest days.

&&

.SHORT TERM...

A trough off the west coast will persist today and then lift
northeastward Tuesday. This will produce a further increase in
winds this afternoon-evening, with 30-40 mph gusts along the
US-395/I-580 corridors and 30-35 mph across west central NV, while
Sierra ridges see gusts of 60-80 mph at times. Choppy lake waters
and locally critical fire weather conditions will result. Winds
ease back to more typical zephyr breezes Tuesday afternoon, with
gusts generally 25-30 mph.

As this trough passes, increased clouds are likely for parts of
eastern CA-western NV today, with some of the latest operational
and high resolution guidance bringing isolated afternoon showers
to western Lassen County. As a result, temperatures west of US-95
will ease back a few degrees from Sunday but remain above average
for mid-June, while for west central NV highs will again reach
the mid 90s. Drier conditions then clear out the clouds tonight
and Tuesday with highs Tuesday similar to today, while the next
two nights remain seasonably cool. Enjoy those "open window" type
of nights before the heat builds in starting Wednesday.

Highs on Wednesday will kick up a notch to solid mid-upper 90s for
most lower elevations with a few warmer sites touching 100, and
80s for Sierra valleys, while winds become lighter. We'll begin to
see some afternoon cumulus mainly south of US-50, but the forecast
position of the building ridge keeps substantial capping aloft so
thunderstorm potential is low--at best only 5-10% chance near the
White Mountains in far southern Mono County. MJD

.LONG TERM...

Unseasonably hot temperatures will be the main story as high
pressure over the Four-Corners region slides westward across the
Sierra and western Nevada. Record setting heat with triple digit
temperatures are expected Thursday-Friday and possibly into
Saturday for lower western Nevada valleys.

* HEAT: Highs will soar to 15-20 degrees above average with record
setting heat possible. Looking at 100-105 degrees across many
lower elevations (mid 80s to around 90 for Sierra valleys) by
Thursday and continuing into Friday. An incoming band of clouds
may temper highs just slightly on Thursday which may result in
Friday seeing the best potential to be the hottest day.

Nonetheless, heat impacts are likely most of this week with the
peak heating expected Thursday through Saturday. Overnight lows
will remain mild and in the 60s with a few areas only cooling to
around 70 degrees such as Walker Lake/Hawthorne and around Mina
 by Thursday AM.

Take extra precautions in preparation for the heat such as
limiting strenuous outdoor activity during peak heat and knowing
the signs of heat exhaustion/stroke. Heat can be a killer, never
leave pets or children unattended inside of vehicles during the
 heat. LOOK before you LOCK.

* THUNDERSTORMS: Along with the heat comes increased instability
and a potential for thunderstorms to develop. Cumulus build
ups are possible across mountainous terrain on Wednesday with a
few thunderstorms Thursday and Friday, especially along the
eastern Sierra north into western NV, especially south of Hwy
  50. Fuentes

&&

.AVIATION...

VFR conditions though midweek with breezy afternoon/evening winds
today. Peak SW-W gusts of 30-35 kts are likely for the main
terminals near US-395 and a bit less for the Tahoe-area terminals.
More widespread mountain wave turbulence is expected as ridge
level wind gusts increase to 55-70 kts through tonight. Periods of
LLWS are also possible through midday today, prior to the stronger
winds mixing down to the surface.

By Tuesday, winds will ease back to more typical breezes with
afternoon gusts 20-25 mph, then winds decrease further on
Wednesday.

Later this week as temperatures reach record warmth for this time
of year, density altitude concerns are expected to increase,
along with the possibility of isolated late day thunderstorms. MJD

&&

.FIRE WEATHER...

...Red Flag Warning will be in effect this afternoon for gusty
winds and low humidity for the Eastern Sierra of southern Mono
County on Monday...

* Low pressure off the Pacific Northwest coast will move onshore
today and will result in increasing SW wind gusts this
afternoon. Most areas will only see minimum humidity around
15-25%, which may mitigate some critical fire weather
conditions, but it will still be a "heads-up" day for gusty
  winds.

* Farther south in southern Mono County (and portions of
southwestern Mineral County) we will see much drier conditions
with minimum RH around 5-12% and some areas less than 5%. These
areas will be the most critical during the afternoon and
evening hours, with areas seeing anywhere from 4-8 hours of red
flag conditions. Peak wind gusts will be between 30-40 mph for
most areas in southern Mono with some wind prone areas along
US-395 seeing gusts up to 45 mph.

* Drier air will filter into the region on Tuesday and gusty winds
will remain but mainly across far northern Washoe County. Areas
of critical fire weather conditions are possible in this area,
but the limiting factor may be the fuel conditions per our
  latest update from fuels specialists.

* Beyond Tuesday, winds will decrease as high pressure builds over
the region. The Four Corners High will build westward over the
Great Basin, bringing well above normal temperatures and weaker
overnight humidity recovery to the region. There is a
significant chance (>70%) that we will see our first triple
digit heat in western Nevada and first 90s in the Sierra.

* Chances of thunderstorms will increase late this week as the
heat builds over the region. The typical pattern for the Sierra
and western Nevada when we get into the triple-digit heat is
that we will see at least a few isolated storms over the Sierra,
even if the models aren't showing it. With the extreme
temperatures, and a chance for lightning, new lightning fires
will be likely with any thunderstorms, along with chances for
  strong outflow winds. Hoon/Fuentes
